Back to the format.

I don't believe time trails to be fair what so ever.  I want to see racing, let's say you have 38 sprint cars in for your show. You have to hot lap them, you get 2 times on track. If you had a early hot lap session in Rd 1 then you get a late session in Rd 2. If you had a late draw and go out a second time early you can still get a good feel for what the tracks doing.

You  then run 2,  20 lap heat races,  19 cars in each. Your first 10 cars from each race get inside or outside rows. You take the cars you have left and let them run for 15 laps for the final 4 to 6 spots.

Line them up for 40 laps and may the best guy win.  The fan gets to see a lot more racing, 95 green flag laps, and isn't that what you pay for.

Actually this pretty close to Port Royals Dream Race foremat which one of my favorite races. They do run time trials. They run two 16 lap qualifying races with odd number time trials in one and even numbered in the other. They each have a seperate purse paying $2000 to win with payment for the whole field. Then they take the top ten from each lined up heads up from the finish. Quaifyers from one on the inside row and the other on the outside and run a B-Main to get the last four starters for $10,000 to win feature.

I can take that from you. I have watched sprints in PA, AZ and ND. Plus 2 Canadian provinces. Have you watched sprints in 2 countries?

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Happy New Year everyone.

Wanted to start the year off with a question for all of you.

What's your preferred format for race lineups?

Pill Draw - Passing Points

Pill Draw - Time Trials - Heat Invert (2, 4, ,6 or 8)

Pill Draw - Time Trials - Straight Up

Any other input on a different format?

I used to be a 45 rpm kind of guy but these days I listen to MP3.

Personally I don't care much either way about the format as long as the racing is good and they get the show over at a reasonable hour.  KInd of like how the All Stars time trial and I have always liked watching time trials prior to the start of the show.  In my early days as a spectator to see who was fast and more recently getting good single car shots in natural light.  Nowadays I watch most of my racing on TV and usually tune in when the first green flag flies.  Whatever format a race uses, pill draw, tt, inversions, etc., it is what it is and nobody would listen to me if I suggested otherwise.  My job is to accept it the way it is.

Didn't a sanctioning body use to do 2 sets of Heat Races with the 2nd round of heats inverted from how they finished the 1st set and line the features up from the passing points? I saw this format years ago at either Knoxville or Oskalooska and it seems like it was a Non Wing show, Maybe USAC?....

The absolute worst format is when you run semi features and line them up by how they finished the semi in the feature.

ASCS, not sure if they still do that. Passing points is my least favorite format. It usually guarantees no passing in the feature. Never saw the logic in dragging out qualifying with 2 sets of heat races either.

You can't possibly have a Kings Royal or Knoxville format every night, or at a track like WIlliams Grove or Lincoln, where it's one lane in the heats.

At a track like Port Royal, which is superior in every way, including heat racing, you might be able to get away with it. But few tracks are as good as Port Royal, but I know I'm preaching to the choir here.

Only a fool would disagree.

Aren't you lucky that you don't go to a track that does it once a year. I will go this year, enjoy it and not spend a minute missing anyone who disagrees with the foremat as will many others.

You can pay the drivers for running heats too.  Semi features are stupid!  That is a fact Jack!

Semi-features have been used for many years.....see usac.

That still doesn't make them any better.

The dream is one of the more unique and entertaining formats of any race. It's nice that it pays out full purses for both semi-features and of course the A main so that several teams can go home with a good pay day. Always a great show. It would be even greater if they could get the purse up to what it was for the initial dream race - 30G to win and 1G to start. The lady who started it helped raise a lot of that money from local track supporters.

As far as formats go, I like it when they use hot laps as time trials for heat race line ups.

I'm hearing that Port Royal is going to time trial during warm ups but haven't heard how they will line up the heats. I am not a fan of this the handicap format in my opinion provides the best racing for the fans.

Outlaw format for me. I don't care how heat races go, I care about the feature and the features for the outlaws hardly ever disappoint.

Agree Nick.  For a 1-night show, I want a format where the cars/drivers/teams that unload fast, have the best chance to put the car in the battle at the front at feature time.  It doesn't mean they win, but they are given a legitimate chance to put it on the podium.  I think it's silly everybody wants all of these inverts on one-night shows.  I hate giving cars that are a 1/2-second slower a handicap while we hope they get a big enough lead that the big guns don't have time to run them down.  Cheapens the accomplishment.  I was in Jackson MN for a weekly show when Paige Polyak beat a field of 20 or so 410's.  Congrats to her---she was fast.  But, she was about the 5th fastest car that night.  Kerry was far and away the fastest car in the field, but somehow he started 8th in the feature that night.  I believe he also finished 8th in the feature as 1-8 finished where they started.  Track was heavy, fast, and one-lane.  So you ask "do you think giving Kerry the pole would have made it more exciting?"  No.  But at least the car that deserved to win.................won!

Do inverts have a place?

I love the invert at the Nationals in August.  The cars starting out front of these heats are not given an advantage.  They are going to end up in the C or D on Saturday night.  The cars placed deep in the heats are the cars with the advantage.  They are not battling the cars at the front of the heats.  They are battling the cars in the middle, and back of the heat------and not just their heat, but all 5 heats.  The heat invert at Knoxville in August is the best format in all of racing IMO.  Because it is combined with points, and it spans multiple days, it assures every driver has the chance to get their fast ride to the front and into the show.  Additionally, it allows all of those underdogs a chance to make it into the big dance.  It really doesn't matter much at the end though--------the cream ALWAYS rises to the top at that show.
