Fox TV ratings for the Daytona 500 were up 30% over last year. Like it or not that is a monster increase in viewers.
Expect continued Danicamania at Phoenix.

I would also say along with the Danica storyline, the Nationwide wreck the day before and all the publicity that got also boosted there viewership. I'm not saying its a good thing that the wreck occurred or anything, just that it only makes sense that as much publicity as that wreck and clip got on local and National news and all the internet attention on Sat. and Sun. morning it had to draw people who would have otherwise not tuned in or maybe wouldn't have otherwise even known the race was gonna happen on Sun., to turn on the 500 so they could be watching in case something else happened again.

I agree with both those reasons that the 500 had higher ratings. Unfortunately, it will not give the same boost to the sport as the 1979 500 did when the entire Eastern seaboard was snowed in. The "race" was terrible as it usually is. If they need to do a restrictor plate race to start the season, wait 3 weeks and try Talledega instead. Daytona has not been a good race for a very long time. If the hype was any indication of the race it would be the greatest of all time. They can sure hype the crap out of it. I would like to get all of the commentators off to the side of the cameras and get them to tell me what they really think about this race. They are all lying through their teeth when they act excited and enthusiastic about it. You know they all think it is a joke.

White flag lap at least 6 cars have a chance to win. Where else do you see that ? I would like to know so I can watch it.

Agree that the ending of the race is, at the very least, a toss up. (it was not very climactic this time around though) But the rest of the race is kind of like the first three quarters of an NBA basketball game. Just give both teams 60 pts. and let them play the 4th quarter. In the Daytona 500, should just line them up with 10 to go and let em go. There is no "making the car better" or anything like that in restrictor plate racing. All a chess match in last 10 laps.
Now, that being said, it is usually still better than 25 of the remaining 35 races of the year. That's why I watch most of the other races in 20 minutes using my DVR!!
Can't wait to plop my butt down in the stands and have some dirt fly in my beer!!!

Unless it's Martinsville or Richmond I usually watch the last 10 minutes of the race. I will, on occasion, take a look at where the cars are running but restirctor plate racing is about as exciting as reading "All I Know About Racing" by a certain keyboard commando! I remember going to Talladega BEFORE the plates and I want to tell you...THAT WAS EXCITING!!!
I LEARNED ESP FROM MY MOM
"PUT YOUR SWEATER ON: DON'T YOU THINK I KNOW WHEN
YOU'RE COLD?"

The danica frenzy is ok,now the media can concentrate the first asian or mexican or arabian or european to lead a lap or to get a pole or a win.......or lets go back to the way it should be.....call them drivers and make them equal again,i guess the nascar media is just like the tabloids,if they have nothing really news worthy, they try to create something to write about, remember the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.who cares if u have an x or y cromizone,or what nationality u are, lets just race.
