Not to argue with either one of you but, the first day of the Mayan long count calendar was back dated to 8/11/3144 BC...See the Mayans believed that humanity suffered a cataclysm around that time...Geologists today are discovering that an earth altering event occurred around that time through data gathered from ice core samples found in the artic rim...

The Mayans, along with other cultures around the world believe that the world has been destroyed three times in the past...Once by fire, once by ice and once by water...It is believed that when the world is destroyed for the fourth and final time it will be through a combination of all three...

i don't take it that you are meaning to argue.
the info i found surmises the mayan calender began around 3114 BC.
to indy and beyond!!

It's funny how no one explains why they back dated their calendar to a date when they did not exist as a culture...I guess we'll have to wait for the results of our modern day scientific community to find the answers...Things that make you go hmmmmmm...

The Moon, Mars, Venus, Orion and the Blue star were all visible in the ESE sky that night in an unusual alignment...But nice try...

While we're on the subject of ancient cultures that built pyramids, lets discuss the Egyptians...
Did you know that the great pyramids were constructed on the longest points of longitude and latitude in that part of the world...They were also constructed at exactly north/south/east and west...They were aligned to the three stars that make up orians belt in the constilation, orion...
Another interesting twist, as it relates to the Mayans, is that the Spinks and the pyramids face the Nile river as the stars faced the black rift on the milky way in the manor in which they did on 12/21/2012...
