Sixth Annual Race 4 Life / Inaugural Donnie Ray Crawford Memorial Night Two

A Race 4 Life / Port City Raceway Special Release by Cody Morris
Port City Raceway / Tulsa, Oklahoma
Friday, August 31, 2012 / Night Two

Early Friday morning the remnants of Hurricane Isaac threatened the schedule of events for the second and final night of qualifying action at the Sixth Annual Race 4 Life / Inaugural Donnie Ray Crawford Memorial at Tulsa, Oklahoma’s Port City Raceway.

Many were listless as the storm approached and forecasters repeatedly put rain chances in the 60-80 percent range. Ultimately the threat proved harmless as a brief shower early in the day was all that materialized. However, the nearby storm did provide a huge benefit, providing beautiful, nearly perfect conditions for the second and final night of preliminary action at the Race 4 Life / Inaugural Donnie Ray Crawford Memorial.

The remaining half of competitors in the Outlaw, Non Wing, “A” Class, and Restricted divisions battled for the 8 remaining lock in positions to Saturday’s coveted Sixth Annual Race 4 Life / Inaugural Donnie Ray Crawford Memorial main events, with the Junior Sprint division also on hand to run their full preliminary program.

Five more winners joined Thursday’s Five to complete the ten preliminary A Feature events scheduled before Saturday’s Race 4 Life / Inaugural DRC Memorial grand finale. While the first two nights made history, they were but a prelude to the prestige up for grabs in Saturday’s final six main events.

Columbia, Missouri’s Drew Shlueley earned the pole position starting spot of the 25 lap Outlaw Feature event with Broken Arrow, Oklahoma’s Scott Sawyer alongside. Shlueley grabbed the immediate lead despite a trio of stoppages in the first five rounds.

Outside second row starter and Bixby, Oklahoma native Kevin Bayer joined Sawyer in hot pursuit of the leader, with Sawyer venturing past on the eighth circuit. A couple of cautions at the midway point of the 25 lapper tested Sawyer’s path and pace, but Sawyer maintained a 4 car length throughout the final half of the contest to win the second Race 4 Life / Donnie Ray Crawford Memorial preliminary night aboard the Sawyer Chassis, Metric Cycles, Lightning Wings, Advanced Racing Suspension, Weld Wheels, and Leading Edge Composites sponsored no. 29.

Hometown native Curtis Jones advanced from the fourth row to earn an impressive runner up finish with Owasso, Oklahoma native Harlan Hulsey advancing two spots to complete the podium.

Kevin Bayer and Pryor, Oklahoma’s Frank “The Legendary” Flud completed the top five finishing order with Steven Shebester, Harli White, and Billy Lawhead earning the final lock-in positions to Saturday’s 55 lap Race4Life / Donnie Ray Crawford Memorial finale.

Delaney Jost, Kevin Bayer, and Harli White earned heat race victories with Drew Shlueley, Kyle Keeler, and Sawyer earning victories in the second round of qualifiers. Owasso’s Chase Rohrbaugh took the winning transfer in the sole 12 lap Outlaw B Feature.

Mcloud, Oklahoma native Chris Cochran earned the pole position starting spot for Friday’s 25 lap Non Wing A Feature with Pauls Valley, Oklahoma’s Steven Shebester alongside. Cochran narrowly led the first round, but Shebester powered by on the second circuit. Shebester maintained a 3 car length advantage until the red flag waved on the tenth lap for a turn 2 mishap that led to Karley Kay Dobson getting upside down. Back on all fours, Dobson rejoined the contest, eventually finishing 12th.

The stoppage brought Randy Crowder and Chris Cochran to immediate rear of Shebester, but Shebester maintained his line and began pulling away with ten laps remaining. The final ten laps went caution free as Shebester mauled the field in earning Friday’s preliminary Non Wing A Feature victory aboard the Envy Racing and Bishop Racing Components no. 82.

Cochran battled by Crowder with two laps remaining to regain runner up rights and relegate Crowder to the show position finish. Jeffrey Newell moved up 8 spots to earn Hard Charger rights and a fourth place finish with Cade Cowles completing the top five finishing order. Randy Wagnon Jr., Joey Baker, and Jason Schuelen earned the final three lock-in positions to Saturday’s Race4Life/DRC Memorial Non Wing main event.

Shawn Wicker, Ty Hulsey, Chris Cochran, and Cade Cowles earned heat race victories with Shebester, Jake Rosario, Chris Cochran, and Randy Crowder taking honors in the second set of qualifiers. Nixa, Missouri’s Devon Huff took the winning style transfer in the 15 lap Non Wing B Feature.

Jay, Oklahoma’s Jordan Herrman earned the pole position starting spot for Friday’s 25 lap preliminary A Feature with Chris Cochran alongside. Following a trio of stoppages in the first three laps, Cochran maintained a strong lead through the mid stages of contest.

Cochran began to be undone by lapped traffic with ten laps remaining. The quick pair of Herrman and Chris Andrews brought their battle for second to the leader’s door step, with Herrman battling by a slight, but official lead on the 17th round. The ensuing handful of laps featured a classic Port City Raceway dogfight as Herrman and Andrews battled for the point amidst several slower machines until a lap 23 caution fell for Josh Marcham’s stalled mount.

A three lap shootout seemed to be in order, but back under green Herrman drove away and into the history books, taking Night Two “A” Class top honors aboard the Momo’s Racing Engines, Steve Dixon, and Sawyer Chassis supported no. 92. Andrews settled for runner up honors with Harlan Hulsey sneaking by Cochran late to complete the podium.

Cochran and Thursday night Restricted preliminary A Feature event winner Jason McDougal completed the top five finishing order. Night One Non Wing victor Cody Cordell, Ryan Ratliff, and Garrett Jennings took the final three lock-in positions to Saturday’s Race4Life / DRC Memorial main event.

Chad Bell, Chase Rohrbaugh, and Jordan Herrman each claimed heat race wins with Herrman completed his qualifier sweep. Chris Andrews and Harli White also claimed qualifier victories. Oklahoma City’s Josh Marcham claimed the winning style transfer in the 15 lap B Feature.

RESTRICTED

Restricted A Feature (25 laps):
1. 91 Cole Lambert (2); 2. 92 Austin Lambert (4); 3. 8x Austin Shores (5); 4. 25 Taylor Reimer (7); 5. 98 Nathan Weida (6); 6. 98x Austin Crowder (13); 7. 93T Tyler Vandiver (17); 8. 7m McKenzie Ramey (8); 9. 60 Kent Miller Jr. (14); 10. 95 Quinton Standlee (16); 11. 49 Trenton Jackson (9); 12. 65G Taylor Garrison (15); 13. 2F James Fell (12); 14. Lap Leaders: Cole Lambert 1-25
Hard Charger: Tyler Vandiver +10

Catoosa, Oklahoma’s Wes Little was slated to lead Friday night’s Restricted preliminary A Feature to green following a sweep of heat race and qualifier action, but mechanical woes ended Little’s bid before the green ever waved as the no. 79 machine failed to fire.

Claremore, Oklahoma’s Cole Lambert gained the early lead, with younger brother Austin Lambert in immediate pursuit. Kansas, Oklahoma’s Rayce Bowen found himself in an unfortunate third position when second place Austin Lambert lost control exiting turn two. Bowen clipped Austin Lambert’s spinning mount, righting Lambert, but sending Bowen upside down and to an early, disheartening exit.

With the brothers Lambert still running 1-2 and pulling away from the field, the final caution flew as Trenton Jackson met disaster while running fifth and vying past a lapped machine, collecting Taylor Garrison as well. Visibly upset, Jackson regained his cool and earned an honorable applause for doing so.

The brothers Lambert again pulled away from the field, but Austin did not make it easy on older brother Cole, hounding the leader relentlessly over the final five circuits. Cole Lambert fended off the attack nicely and earned the Night Two preliminary Restricted A feature win aboard the Lamberts Auto Salvage, 5L Angus, American Bank of Oklahoma, and Collinsville Collision supported no. 91. Austin Lambert took runner up honors with Atoka’s Austin Shores closing out the podium.

Tulsa’s Taylor Reimer and Owasso’s Nathan Weida completed the top five finishing order with Austin Crowder crossing sixth. Coweta, Oklahoma’s Tyler Vandiver turned in an impressive march from the 17th and final starting spot to finish seventh, with Fort Worth, Texas native Kenzie Ramey earning the eighth and final lock-in spot into Saturday’s Race4Life / Donnie Ray Crawford Memorial main event.
Taylor Reimer, Wes Little, and Trenton Jackson each claimed heat race victories with Little completing his sweep in qualifer action. Nathan Weida and Rayce Bowen also claimed qualifer victories.

1. 14 Blake Battles (1); 2. 08 Cannon Macintosh (3); 3. 1H Hank Davis (7); 4. 95 Ryan Hunt (4); 5. 7m Dylan Ramey (9); 6. 25 Noah Gass (8); 7. 65g Montana Garrison (11); 8. 17 Connor Lee (10); 9. 13 Dylan Short (13); 10. 42 Grady Mercer (6); 11. 29 Blake Scott (14); 12. 15E Dakota Earls (17); 13. 8 Dylan Paul (15); 14. 22 Chase Hubbard (16); 15. 14R Jacob Nail (2); 16. 77D Kale Drake (5); 17. 99 Nathan Rainey (12)
Lap Leaders: Blake Battles 1-25
Hard Charger: Dakota Earls +5

Like the Sportsman division on Thursday, the Junior Sprint division completed their qualifying in full on Friday. Collinsville, Oklahoma’s Blake Battles earned the pole position starting spot for the 25 lap Junior Sprint A Feature with Muskogee, Oklahoma’s Jacob Nail alongside.

Battles immediately assumed command with inside second row starter Cannon MacIntosh moving up to challenge. The pair sped away, with MacIntosh completing a pass for the lead on the ninth circuit. However, the pass for the lead would be nullified when Blake Scott’s mount stalled atop turn two, collecting Nathan Rainey in the process.

With Battles back in command, MacIntosh shadowed Battles throughout the final half of the 25 lap contest, but failed to repeat the feat, allowing the defending Pete Frazier Memorial Jr. Sprint champ to claim the Inaugural Race 4 Life / Donnie Ray Crawford Memorial Jr. Sprint contest aboard the Factor One Racing, “Y”Knot Trucking, Lightning Wings. Xtreme Trucking, Kevin Battles Racing Engines supported no. 14.

A winner in I-44 Riverside Speedway’s 11th Annual Mini Sprint Nationals, MacIntosh accepted runner up honors and the chance to upend Battles in Saturday’s finale. Hank Davis, Ryan Hunt, and Fort Worth’s Dylan Ramey completed the top five finishing order.
