Rob mccuen had a good article for those of you that get it. I have done some bashing on this board and still will when I feel its right. But he has a lot of good points all the sh!t talking is only gonna kill our sport, my favorite line and I like this one because I have done it before and it means the world to them and makes you feel 10' tall ..."slip 20 bucks to a down and out team and tell them you support there efforts"!

This sport has much bigger problems than internet hecklers. NFL, NBA, etc, all get ripped by negative sports writers and internet posts and they seem to thrive. I'm not denying that this happens on racing boards but based on what I'm seeing in my travels there are much bigger problems than angry 40 year olds living an online life in their parent's basement.

That's a pet peeve of mine, writers ripping on the internet as the source of this sport's problems. I'm sure that the writers of old used to probably say the same things about radio and later television. One of my favorite sayings, "there's a fine line between historian and dinosaur". wink

P.S., just read the article and Rob makes some good points but on the flip side of the coin racers, promoters and everyone involved in the sport (including writers) put themselves out there as celebrities in this little corner of the racing world. People are going to criticize, some are civil about it, some aren't. I think those old expression about water rolling off a duck's back and broad shoulders would apply in this case. Looking at the posts it's not too hard to pick out the ones living in the double wide and ignore them. The biggest problems I see are the expense of the sport, owners getting out faster than they're getting in and promoters just barely able to keep their gates open. Sponsor dollars are somewhere between tight and non-existent and quite a few of us can't muster up that extra $50 to $100 every weekend to run off and chase these races the way we did ten years ago. When those problems are resolved (if they ever are) then idiots posting trash in double wides will be a lot easier to ignore.

Stan,

I agree with what you are saying, but why would somebody want to buy a car, invest a lot of time and money, only to get shit on by all the "fans". Being a minor celebrity or not I know some racers that have told me that it gets old to hear all the negativity. Most drivers that I know aren't rich and are doing it because they love it.

I know plenty of guys that drive b-mods or hobby stocks. I'm always respectful to them and tell them that I appreciate them racing. Even if I don't particularly like their class of cars, you gotta respect them. I just wish more people thought this way.

I agree with Stan.

I remember a couple of years ago when a local track took a huge beating during the week from a lot of posters on a local message board.

I remember going to the next race there thinking "This is gonna suck. Nobody's gonna be here and the few who will be are gonna be hostile".

Of course, I couldn't have been more wrong. When I got there, there was a good crowd and everyone I talked to was happy to be there and excited about the racing that night.

That reminded me that those who post on internet message boards are just a minute portion of the local racing community.

It's easy for the small number of us who peruse message boards regularly to get caught up in everything that's posted here. But we need to be reminded that message boards are in no way a reflection of the far greater number of "average" fans.
