Someone stole our contact list and has sent out an email to everyone on it that we are stranded in London and asking for help. The calls are still coming in from our friends that we have been "hit" so we haven't seen the message but anybody that knows us knows it to be bogus ...and they know immediately !
The hassle for us to correct the problem has been exasperating. We live in a world of "Press 2" and it is so hard to find a real person to assist you when you get hacked.

I got the same email from a friend of mine that was 'hacked.' The obvious spelling errors and improper use of grammar and the fact my friend is easily called ... I played along ... I went to google and got a phony 10 digit Western Union Money Gram number (as they asked for the number) and played the sucker for like 24 hours.
After the fun was over ... I wrote the 'perp' a VERY unflattering email about his lack of married parents and to look in a mirror and take the fishhook outta his mouth.
My friend fell for a phony email from a realistic looking MSN Hotmail notice to update his account and password or they (MSN) were going to close his account that's how they got his actual password info btw.

Here's the message.....I knew it was BS as I knew that there was no way you two would be in London with the Nationals so close!!!! LOL!
Hi,
I'm writing this with tears in my eyes,my family and I came down here to London, United Kingdom for a short vacation. unfortunately,we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed, all cash and credit card were stolen off us but luckily for us we still have our passports with us.
We've been to the Embassy and the Police here but they're not helping issues at all and our flight leaves in few hours from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills. Well I really need your financially assistance..Please, let me know if you can help us out? Am freaked out at the moment!!

I think so ...kept emailing me he was at Western Union and no Money Gram ... I kept stringing him along that I had called the manager in DSM and they said it was sent ... on and on ... I don't know if they have to physically got to a W.U. office or can pull the funds on line etc. I just figured while I was 'jack assin' him around ... he wasn't hacking any other accounts.
I dumped the emails or would post his frantic 'cries for help' emails back to me.

Seriously Sports Fans..... We are so "computer ignorant" that we can hardly figure out how to do the simplest tasks. So our real question is : Why is our mail box completely empty and remains that way for the last 12 hours ? Are they intercepting everything that normally would come to us ? And if so does this mean that we have to discard our old ID ? WTF ?

I'd just get a generic e-mail account and use that. Thats what I have been using for years, and I never have to change my e-mail address when I have changed providers. Never been hacked either that I remember
PS I never got one of those e-mails from you. Maybe it was just folks low on the totem pole that got them.

Bud,
This exact same letter and hack happened to a co-worker. The way this works is the hacker has got into your email account and has taken FULL control. You can kiss it goodbye and all the info contained in it. You will never be able to gain access to that account even if you get Yahoo or whoever to cooperate. The best thing you can do is cancel your credit cards if you ever had passed info in emails saved where full account numbers were listed. This is unfortunate and this happens all the time, the best thing you can do is protect your online presence as safely as possible and never click on links within emails even if they appear to come from trusted sources. If unsure, email the the person and ask if they sent it. If you get no no reply, just delete it and move on.
Good luck recovering from this. My friend and a full blown identity theft happen in the space of 3 days but did not lose much money. Her bank accounts and credit cards were swiftly closed to stop the bleeding.
BTW if you have not done it already, you need to set up a new email account and start logging in to the places you've registered and change the email info. You're starting fresh my friend, good luck to you

In checking around we find that our little used "FACEBOOK" connection may have been the culprit and the avenue that allowed the entry into our world.A granddaughter's email held the clue and upon trying to hook up we found that our password had been changed at 4:57 am last Friday morning......right before the bogus emails went out !
So goodby Facebook. The only people that we care about anyway can be contacted by telephone.
Thanks for the help and advice,Steve. So far we are OK but scrambling to get all the bases covered.

Facebook is fine to use, but you need to "lock it down" so that only "friends and family" can "see" your page. Also, don't click on ANY links on FB.

Yahoo has an excellent 'generic' e-mail system. Actually better than my local cable television company's e-mail system. Wish I still had Quest, but I wrongly went for the TV company's package/bundle deal for TV, PC, and telephone and tied in for another 7 months.
Lawlessness and liberalism equals Hell. NY City,
Detroit, Seattle, Chicago, Minnepolis, etc. We saw it.
Burning hundreds of buildings, a thousand assaults and
dozens of murders. Getting worser and worser.
