Ryan Taylor won at Port Royal tonight & Mike Bittinger won at Lincoln. Both races won from the front row. Port was a draw show & Lincoln was handicapped tonight.

PORT ROYAL – Ryan Taylor held off all challengers to win the sprint car feature at Port Royal Speedway on Saturday night. Taylor’s win was worth $3,000 in a family-owned car.

Several cars got crossed-up in turn one on the start resulting in Todd Shaffer and Daryn Pittman flipping. Defending track champion Chad Layton of Harrisburg was also involved. No injuries were reported.

Taylor, of Perkasie, started second and grabbed the early lead of the 25-lap main event over polesitter Mark Smith and Lance Dewease.

“I knew Mark Smith, on a track like this, was going to be the one to beat,” Taylor said. “On the first start, he got me, and on the second start, we were dead even. I just ran it in for all it was worth in one and two came out first.

Dewease, of Fayetteville, looked under Smith in turn two on lap three, but couldn’t make the pass. Tyler Walker passed Steve Buckwalter for fifth just before Mike Erdley’s third turn spin brought out the caution on lap four. Erdley had been running fourth.

Taylor pulled ahead on the restart as Walker tried to take third from Dewease, but the caution flew on lap six for a slowing sprinter.

As Taylor continued to lead Smith and Dewease, Justin Henderson drove by Walker and into fourth. Taylor began to pass slower cars as the race behind him began to get close.

Taylor drove around the slower cars, but the next three were backed up thanks to traffic. Caution flags on laps 15 and lap 19 kept the veterans behind Taylor, but he drove away each time.

“I thought, ‘man one of these times they’re going to get me,’” Taylor said. “These Rider Engines give me all the power I need to win on a fast, fast track like this one tonight.”

Walker fell off the pace and pitted after the lap 19 restart and then the red flag flew on lap 22. Walker stopped on the pit lane outside turn four and needed medical attention so the race was stopped. Walker suffered a leg injury due to a mud clump coming into the car and striking him.

Taylor would hold on for his second career Port Royal win over Smith, Dewease, Rick Lafferty and Buckwalter. Mike Erdley, Mike Wagner, Cliff Brian, Ed Aikin and John Brennfleck completed the top 10.

Waylon Wagner won the 20-lap late model feature over Mitch Hack, Tim Gray, Scotty Haus and Brian Sipe.

I beg to differ. There has been a repeat winner, Although in two different divisions. Blane Heimbauch won his second race this year. He is the only driver so far this season to win in both divisions . 1 Win at Port Royal in a 410 and 1 tonight at Selinsgrove in his 358.

It's been a long time since the local sprint-car season has started the way it has this year.

In nine local sprint races this year there have been nine different winners.

Lincoln Speedway has run five races, Port Royal has run twice and Williams Grove and Selinsgrove have each run one race.

For the record, Lance Dewease, Doug Esh, Brian Montieth, Stevie Smith, Danny Dietrich, Brent Marks, Blane Heimbach, and, most recently, Mike Bittinger and Ryan Taylor, have won 410 sprint races in the area this year.

What's missing from that list are some of this area's biggest winners in recent years.

Consider that the area's biggest winner of all time, Fred Rahmer, hasn't won. Neither have last year's Williams Grove and Port Royal champions, Greg Hodnett and Chad Layton. Hodnett was also last year's overall champion in what is now the Speedway Motors Series.

Daryn Pittman was one of last year's top winners, but he too hasn't won locally yet this year.

In fact, if one were to look at the top 25 drivers in this year's Speedway Motors Series, there are still 15 drivers who won races last year who have yet to win this year in local 410 competition.

Since there are actually 26 drivers in the current top 25, that leaves just two of this year's top drivers who didn't win this year or last year. One is Gerard McIntyre Jr., who won the year before, and the other is last year's National Sprint Car Rookie of the Year, Brad McClelland. What this means is that there is a real chance that the string on no repeat winners could go on for a long time. Or it could end next Friday. Who knows?
