So what is one of the biggest stars in motor sport in the US doing racing a sprint carin Sydney over the Christmas-New Year period, when he could be home in Indiana relaxing with his family and friends over the festive season?

Tony Stewart is here because he loves to race and this includes almost anything on four wheels.

The dual NASCAR champ has never forgotten his dirt-track roots, the highlight being his charge to collect three USAC divisions – Sprint, Midget and Silver Crown – in the one year (1995). Today, as well as his successful NASCAR squad, he owns two World of Outlaws sprintcar teams, a pair of USAC operations and the half-mile (800-metre) Eldora Speedway.

After four days of relaxing on Hamilton Island, Stewart and travelling buddy Donny Schatz return to Sydney to prepare for a series of big-money shows at Sydney Speedway, starting the day after Christmas in the annual Valvoline Australian Sprintcar Grand Prix.

He has also been booked for four subsequent shows at Sydney Speedway. They include the Sydney International on December 29, when Stewart and Schatz will be joined by a handful of other globetrotting Americans, including Joey Saldana and Craig Dollansky.

Stewart will be driving a car owned by Garry Rush, who says that the well-covered superstar has been working out solidly to prepare for the sojourn Down Under. Competing in about 50 NASCAR races a year doesn't keep him fit enough for the punishing physical demands of manhandling an 800-horsepower sprintcar on clay, Stewart says.

Stewart has also been getting his eye in at Eldora.

Rush says any local expecting to find Stewart in a holiday mood on Boxing Day evening will be sadly mistaken.
