I appreciate your candor on the topic Bobcat, much more than you know.
I have wrestled with the idea of backup picks for the last few months. There are many large positives to it imho. I worry about the negatives though. The positive is the clearest - which is not having teams absent. The negatives are a little more murky. The possible negative is people not making picks very often. On the surface it sounds like something to revert to in case someone can't get on here or is out of town or something, but it could also lead to people just not getting on much to make their picks.
Imagine if you will - someone submitting a back up line at the beg. of the year - and then just never making picks the rest of the year. I mean, NEVER making weekly picks the rest of the year. It doesn't seem right for someone to do that and still have Stanley Reed Jr, all year long and their opponents have to dance around that every week or settle for having identical pick(s).
If it was just a couple teams - just doing it every now and then - then I don't think it would be a bad thing. But I am fairly convinced that if we allowed back up lines - it would be much more than that. Maybe eventually, maybe at first. And it is a little messed up that someone could submit a backup line and thats it - they could never pick all year but still without exception have the elite drivers every week. Of course they couldn't possibly win em all - I know that. But it would be an advantage they really don't deserve over those who actually put weekly thought into their picks.
Also, it just doesn't seem as much fun - either a player in it - or as commissioner - if back up lines became even somewhat prevalent. I would really like how it would solve the absences, but then at what cost? I think the league could come to resemble a crap nascar fantasy league on yahoo. Instead of having a fun weekly league - with hands on thought and discussions with other players. Of course having 7 teams not pick ain't much fun either. But imho it's still far better than scoring 25 back-up lines. Maybe that wouldn't happen, but maybe it would. I know if it did - I wouldn't score this stuff on a weekly basis, wouldn't go through the trouble of posting weekly threads. By all rights - if folks don't want to go through the "trouble" of taking 30 seconds to post their picks - why should I go through the trouble of spending a few hours on weekly threads that possibly only a fraction of the league would really care to look at or post picks in?
And I think about that - and wander if it right of me to fell that way. Many times, I have felt that the weekly threads, full of picks and comments, have really been the justification for the time I spend when all ready exhausted on friday night. I know I am not set to do anything this year - just hope that all 40 teams finish the year out strong and we have a lot of fun in the little time left in the year. But it's become very clear that there is dozens of different things to think about with next year.
I respect your opinion to the upmost Bobcat. And hope you don't feel slighted that I disagree. None of this league or what I do would have been possible without the idea and initiative you had to kick it off. The negatives to the back up line idea do seem potentially large though. I do like the upside to the idea - just wander if a few small tweaks could minimize the impact of the potential downside to it. I feel it would be better to finish of the year as is. I think there are a lot of possibilities, more than appears - and think it would be great to discuss them between now and the start of season 3. We had a lot of good, informative trading of ideas last year that I think led to a really good league these first 2 seasons. And with more of the same - I truly think we could make the league even better.
Also - Jimmy thats some good logic. It sounds a little complicated on the surface, but it's a feast for thought for sure.

Cody,
Just a thought, but how about this idea. The beginning of the year you give a back-up line up, BUT you can only use it a certain number of times per season. After that number is gone, then the next time you miss, you are automatically out of the league.
Also, question for ya. Since it is hard to keep up with who is driving the smileys car in the sport mod division, is it ok to pick the smileys car as your pick, or do you have to have the drivers name.
Thanks,
Todd

Dee ta dee- the Fantasy League started on March 8 at the first race of the season. Now all of the sudden you want to play with "5" races to go. Get it on, at least that way I won't have the worst record two (2) years in a row. Maybe you can "ass"ume the Circle Jerks fame for the 2010 season. I'll give it up for a "new" RR or $200 which ever comes first.
