Skagit Speedway Media - 6/13/2009

Alger, WA- Barry Martinez is officially geared up for the Van's Equipment Rentals & Sales Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway. After fading back to third on the initial start of the Associated Asphalt 410 main event, the Lynnwood WA resident battled his way back into contention in his Artisan Homes #66 J&J, powering around the inside of the track. After passing Jesse Whitney for second, Martinez set sail for race leader Jason Solwold who had taken the lead from Whitney on lap eight. Mired in heavy traffic, Martinez powered under Solwold coming off the fourth corner on lap fifteen to nose into the lead. Solwold saw Martinez and went to go for his lead back but made contact with lapped traffic, causing a spin out and collecting fourth place running Rick Fauver with him. On the restart, Colton Heath would blow by Whitney for second and set sail for the leader Martinez. But it was not to be, as Martinez masterfully navigated the final laps of the Skagit 3/10 clay oval to take his second win of the year. Heath in the Sanford Tire #5x XXX finished second, with Whitney coming home third in the Precise Machining #88 Eagle. Whitney also set quick time. Heat wins went to Heath, Cory Chamberlain in the Bob & Lori Scott owned #7s Maxim and Chad Hillier in the APC Powdercoating #38 J&J.

Kelsey Carpenter raced to a division leading fourth main event win in the Cook Road Shell Sportsman Sprints. Aboard his Dri-Eaz sponsored #27c XXX, Kelsey led every lap of the feature, winning the race by 5.9 seconds. Second was Lyle Woods in the K&B Racing #12k Becker. Third went to Paul Burdick in the Precision Collision #9 XXX. Heat wins went to Carpenter and Burdick.

The Modifieds made their one and only appearance of 2009 at Skagit Speedway, with drivers coming from British Columbia all the way to Oregon to compete. Leroy Lawhead of Rochester WA led the initial three laps until Jason Beaulieu of Vancouver BC took the lead on lap four. Beaulieu continued to lead until he ran in to traffic (quite literally) on the 10th lap, spinning himself out and handing the lead back to Lawhead, who would hold on to win 10 laps later. Second was Craig Moore of Seabeck WA, third Scott Miller of Shelton WA making it an all Washington top three. Heat race wins went to Beaulieu and Lawhead.

Tyler Ketchum won the Outlaw Hornet main event, holding off multiple time main event winner Cory Swatzina and Ben Gunderson for his first win of 2009. Ketchum capped off his stellar night by also winning his heat race. The other heat race win went to James Sanford.

Skagit Speedway wishes the thank all of the patrons of the track and the drivers for coming up and passing their helmets around, as tonight was our Relay for Life night. All told, Skagit Speedway fans and divers raised over $2,000 dollars for the American Cancer Society. Thank you fans and teams!

The Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup starts next Wednesday with the Dirt Cup Party at Haggen Food & Pharmacy in Burlington at 4pm. The 410 sprints kick off racing action on Thursday night, with some of the biggest names in sprint cars vying for their share of the $150,000 overall purse. Come see superstars like Sammy Swindell, Tim Kaeding and Jonathan Allard taking on the best of the local 410s like Barry Martinez, Colton Heath and Jesse Whitney as they all vie for the biggest piece of the pie, the $25,000 Dirt Cup Champion winner's check. Dirt Cup - June 18th, 19th and 20th at Skagit Speedway. For ticket information, log on to www.skagitspeedway.com
