I just finished talking to Duane a few mins ago.He asked me to post to let all of his
friends know that he’s doing OK.
He’s currently still in the Des Moines hospital and hopes to
be released on Monday.Duane stated
that his right knee is damaged pretty badly. The socket at the top of the tibia that connects into the knee was “30
percent busted” and is now patched-up with an assortment of screws and plates. They operated on him last Thursday.
Duane says that the operation was deemed a success and he is
in “no real pain, just terribly inconvenienced”.A lot of the pain is from his ribs but fortunately none of them
were broken.
The plan is for him to undergo therapy at the VA hospital
(Duane is a Vet) in Knoxville. He’s
going to attempt to bypass this and talk them into letting do his therapy at
home.Stubborn as ever.
Spoke to the big fella on the phone and he's ready for a change of scenery (must have a male nurse..)
Not sure how mobile he's gonna be back in Marshalltown but I do know he's looking for volunteers to help with his sponge baths, any takers? He was also making a lot of sense so I'm deeply worried he's on some serious medication, even sounded a wee bit tree huggerish at times. We all need to pray for a speedy and Conservative recovery methinks. Take It Easy...

Next thing you know, he'll be campaigning for Obama.

Best wishes to NoDust. Unless you have gone through physical therapy, you don't really know what it is like. I broke my left elbow three years ago falling on a patch of ice. As bad as the broken elbow itself was, that was nothing compared to going through physical therapy. My elbow was "frozen" in place, and I didn't think it would ever bend again. The first couple sessions of therapy, it was all I could do to make my arm bend or extend half an inch. Something as simple as holding a can of soup in my hand and twisting my wrist left and right nearly brought me to tears.
One of the exercises I had was placing my elbow on a stack of books and pushing down on my wrist with my other hand to make my elbow ligaments extend again. Every time I did it, I felt as though my elbow was going to snap. Even now, my elbow is still not perfect. But it is probably as good as it will ever get. I still have problems with it cracking and popping all the time. I am only 36 and my orthopedist has told me that the pain I still have when I extend my elbow in due to arthritis settling in because of the break.
Hope everything goes well for NoDust with his therapy. Definitely put serious effort into the home exercises your therapist gives to you. It will be worth it if you want to get full range of motion back in your knee.
