Whats everybody think about this new rule? I was listening to Lanny tell Jay Sale that his frame was illegal without even looking at it. Jay invited him down to measure the frame and inspect it. His car was legal. So, I questioned him about the spring rule. He told me my car was illegal also and he had never looked at it. He came down and measured it and it was legal . Sounds like some people are filling his ears with info thats false. How many cars are really illegal? Who picked the spring rate minimum?

Hey Mick, there is a problem with frame rails on cars that have the new OEM front clips. USMTS and IMCA are starting to DQ cars that show up with them but have given them until May 15th to get them corrected. Until then, they have to run, i believe, at least a 550 spring on the right front until then. Were he got the 650, i dont know. I run a 500 on mine and its legal. If your car is a late '08 or an '09, i would call whoever made your frame and ask them. I talked to Todd Staley about a week ago, he runs the USMTS, and he would not tell me who had illegal frames or not, but he did say they were out there.

JD, the spring rule is for the cars that had illegal frames. Everyone else can run what they want to. As for a tester, ThunderHill made a jig to check frames.

To tell you the truth, though, i know of one car that is illegal, and i cant see where it is cut. I know it is because the car owner told me and i looked by myself to see if it was that obvious and its not to me, so i can only guess what the tech's are going thru, especially if they cant make the "puffer" work and the "vacuum" gauge work!!!

Checking springs is very inconsistent, if you are running for points at okc, you willl probably have to run a 700 lb. spring and your own tester to keep up with the rate as it gets older. Why should I have to change my setup when my frame is legal. Most of the top builders have a usmts and an imca car. I called my builder and he said mine was fine, he has alot of cars that run at boone and they know how to check the frames.

At okc everybody has to have a minimum 650 spring, legal frame or not.

Well i guess i wont be at SFS at all this year or ever. I'm not changing my setup on a legal car just because of him. I dont know why he's even changing the rules because he doesnt enforce the ones he already has. Another dumbass move Lanny!!!

Maybe if you enforced the rules you already have, people might have some respect for you. But when you overturn cars that have been DQ'd time and time again, no one really cares anymore.

this is truly crazy and SFS is taking it too far.

Its not that hard to tech either, just have to use common sense. I just wanted to add that IMCA is not giving no grace time, anyone with a tipped rail is illegal now and USMTS is giving til sometime in may.

If your cars has been altered, bring it to Enid and race, they would be delighted to get more than 10 modifieds...

I know on some other sites they were talking about the skyrockets, hughes, tre, grt, and larry shaw. All the big name chassis builders have had a car that had been done. I know at the TEXAS DIRT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS at least 90% of the modifieds had this modification. See it myself. IT WILL BE NICE TO HAVE EVERYONE BACK ON SAME PAGE!!!!

It's all a crock and got started by one loose lipped asshole , Are we racing in IRAQ thats sure what it feels like . Better watch out pretty soon ther will be spec oil's , wheels , hell maybe even spec toilet paper .........Thats a big part of racing being able to choose your shock and spring package ..

lets watch the car counts fall

winners dont cry when they lose , they go back to the
drawing board and come back for round 2 !

Two problems I see with enforcing the frame issue 1. The person on the other end of the tape measure 2. My problem, my car was hit hard on the right front before I got it and fixed. What are the chances of it passin all those measurements? I think the spring rule is the best way to do it since it takes that advantage away but I think the rate should of been a little lower. I don't know how you can run a 500lb spring in the Rf of a stock frame car but good luck at Brill and Enid cause if USMTS says its 550 I don't know anyone that would allow lower than that.

lanny is going to blow his lid when he learns that a spring tester has to much variance - 1st, springs are checked at 1 in compression, a 1/16 of an inch variance is a big difference and can make you illegal. 2nd- front springs have a flat edge on one end and not on the other, a spring tester can be used with a flat plate on top and bottom, radiused plates on top and bottom, or mix them up. All different readings. Then once this gets him pissed off, he still has to figure out what to do with all of his emods that didnt pull vacuum, either his gauge is bad or alll of the top five were illegal. Poor Lanny!!!!!

just come and race at enid, they dont care what your spring rate is or if you rail has been kicked up!!!

they allowed aluminum heads last year with no extra weight mounted on motor plate. That is why derek rameriz was able to get an A feature win and this was after he was called illegal 2 weeks before for having aluminum heads. Enid allows "run what you brung" in the modifieds!!! Maybe this is how it should be, who cares as long as it brings in more cars....

Where is the ORA on this deal? It should be the place of the association to set parameters and mandate parts on cars. Does NCRA, ASCS, WoO (not that they come here anymore), LMRA or any other racing body change their cars to "Lanny rules" when they come? No. They run their tires, their wings, and anything else that's allowed by THEIR association.

A lot of the rules at most of the regional tracks for modifieds and sprints are archaic and out of date, and in a lot of cases, out to lunch.

Look at these rules from West Siloam. They are the complete rules for modifieds from top to bottom. Based on these rules, imagine what one could bring to the track.........

2009 Modified Rules

Wheels and Tires: Grooving of tires is OK. Bead-lock on right rear only. No softening or recaps allowed, period. KK704 or KK704 short American Racers, IMCA stamped Hoosiers ok, Southwest Speed Modified Racing Tire (IMCA type. Optional to run Hoosier F53, F75, 970, 880 asphalt take offs only. 8" wheels only.

Weight: Car and driver must weigh 2350 pounds after race.

Transmission: After-market transmissions are acceptable. No direct drives, starter must work. No aluminum parts in rear end. No gold trac. 6" maximum spoiler ok

Aluminum heads are ok. Must add 50 pounds to head of motor plate, this does NOT include brackets, bolts, washers or nuts. No Aluminum blocks allowed.

All cars must have steel plate thickness to IMCA specs on the driver's side door bars. No Exceptions!

All cars must be safety checked and inspected first time appearance at this track. All cars MUST have working fire extinguishers. No Exceptions!

Car Numberson cars must be legible by the scorers; this includes reflective numbers, hard to decipher numbers and numbers matching the paint scheme. Numbers must be on both sides and top of car. Numbers must be at least 18"x 5" on the sides, numbers should be at least 24"x5" on the roof, and numbers must be a contrast color to car. If multiple cars in the same division are identical they must have a noticeable difference in the number. If you are unsure about your numbers please contact a track official. NOTE: if your number cannot be read you will not be scored and you will not be paid! If you have been warned about your number you will not be scored the following week if the number is not corrected.

It's not HOW fast you go, but how you GO fast.

So if no one agrees with the spring rule what do you all propose to fix the frame rail delima? I think everyone agrees it is a problem and it can not be properly checked much less in a timely manner. Lets hear some ideas.

I put my thoughts in on the other post about how i feel about the right side frame rail. But for those of you whom may have not seen it I think that people are making such a big deal of nothing!!! I say let things that even low budget Joe can afford to do slide and take control of the spending on the motors and shocks. You want something to tech, try to tech the lower control arm mount points, that is something you maybe surprised by on the outcome. The raised right front frame rail is not going to make a slow guy run with the fast guys, and it damn sure isnt going to slow down the fast guys.

Lanny may have come up with this rule, but I know Stanley Reed Jr (ORA President) agreed to it!

On another note not only do you have to have a spring checked when you buy it, you will have to have it regularly tested as it gives up. Then there is the whole deal of the SFS tech personnel knowing how to test the springs. And for those of you who do not know, I have heard that SFS has bought some kind of rig that will let them test springs installed in a car. Don't ask me how they are going to do that accurately. Micky you probably will have to run a 750 to be on the safe side. But there will be a few that run a 650 don't tech legal, but because who they are they wont be DQed. Typical Lanny do whatever he can do to keep his cars where they can not travel with ease. Oh and forget going to some big shows where its going to be dry and use anything you have learned at SFS. Guys that have run the softer right front springs are going to leave you behind.

Yes Lawton and Devils bowl have the same rule. From what I've heard NCRA will be going to the same rule, I plan to call C-ray and comfirm that myself. JD, a stock block 302 car could probably run a 500lb spring but I don't know how else it would work with a stock frame. Not sayin it won't JMO

As far as I'm concerned they can let it all be legal but thats not going to happen, my car got hamered and fixed so whats the chance of it passin all those measurements. None! Now tell me how they can fix it, better yet call Stanley and get him to bring it to a vote in OKC because thats what I'm trying to do for Lawton. Now how about some ideas on how to make this work instead of everybody just bitchin about it. Not pointing my finger at anyone. Just want to fix it.
