The Daytona 500 is probably the only "door slammer" race that I will watch this year. Its on my TV as I post. I am not a fan of NASCAR, but I watch this race because of my interest in Tony Stewart, Robby Gordon, Ryan Newman and a few others. Stewart, Newman and Kasey Kahne of course were all veterans of sprint car racing. It also marks the beginning of the new race season for many and I am pretty desperate for some race action. Ten minutes into the race I am already sick of D.W., that stupid gopher cartoon and all of the phony drama that NASCAR and Fox promotes. I must admit that the broadcaster's camera angles during the race are very good. But, what makes my skin crawl the most about NASCAR/Fox television is that hick Waltrip sing out with another "Boogity, Boogity, Boogity let's go racing boys" for all of America to hear. And get sick. The little gopher is nothing but a rip off of the Warner Bros. cartoon "the Road Runner and Wylie Coyote." How creative is the person that dreamed up this nonsense of a cartoon. I for one am sick of it and can't wait until the sprinters return to Perris Auto Speedway. Then and only then will my world be right again! Just my opinion of course.

yeah rob, what step is it that we're not supposed to watch the door-slammers on the tube or sprint cars with barn doors on top?

I wish they were still door slammers. At least the racing was alot more interesting than this hollywood style of racing that nascar has morphed into. The season hasn't started yet (real racing, sprint cars) and I already miss Tony Jones. Well, hope its a good year for all.

Kind of sad really. I was at Riverside in 63, and so were some of the best open wheel drivers of that era. I also like to remind the stock car snobs( I'm a sprint car snob..LOL) That both Foyt and Andretti have won the Daytona 500. It was different then. We might have been open wheel guys, but we respected those stock car boy's in those days. They were a tough and talented bunch of drivers back then.

One of the all-time great super modified drivers from San Jose Speedway. $375 cool. Also Kenny, is this the same Dave MacDonald that perished at Indy with the late Eddie Sachs?

The same... a interesting read.

Dave MacDonald(July 23,1936May 30,1964) was aCorvetteandShelby Cobrasports cardriver in the early 1960s. He was one of two drivers killed during the1964 Indianapolis 500in a fiery crash that directly led to a change in fuel type fromgasolinetomethanol. He was born inEl Monte, California. MacDonald became noted on the West Coast for his performance in the sports car circuits. He competed in sevenNASCARGrand Nationalraces, finishing second in one race each in both 1963 and 1964. In 1964, he was hired byMickey Thompsonto drive the radical #83 "Sears-Allstate Special", aFord-engined Thompson.[1]Mickey Thompson also entered a car forMasten Gregory(#82, was 2nd alternate, failing to qualify) as well as the #84 forEddie Johnson84, which lasted 6 laps before retiring. It was a rear-engined car that first raced in 1963, updated with a streamlined body for 1964. The car was designed to start with enough fuel to run the full race, housed within a rubber bladder in an enclosed tank that ran between the tires on the left side. The car also featured Sears tires.[2] Many drivers turned down this ride before MacDonald was hired. It was far ahead of its time, but was badly designed, poorly built and difficult to drive.[3]It handled badly, a condition made worse when the body was modified to accommodate theUSAC-mandated 15-inch (380 mm) tires.Graham Hilltested the vehicle before Indy, but refused to drive it in 1963. Masten Gregory crashed earlier in the month due to aerodynamic lift. Other drivers took the advice of Gregory, and stayed away from the Thompson cars. Jim Clark told MacDonald on Carb Day, "Get out of that car mate, just walk away." The ride also offered toMario Andretti, who turned it down due Andretti's concerns over his lack of experience and the fact that the ride was only for Indy. According to long-time motor sports journalistChris Economaki, MacDonald never practiced with a full load of fuel due to Thompson's focus on high speeds.[4] In the first lap of his first Indy 500 race in 1964, MacDonald passed at least 5 other cars. As MacDonald passedJohnny RutherfordandEddie Sachs, Rutherford noticed that MacDonald's car was very loose, even throwing grass and dirt up from the edge of the track. Rutherford later said that, watching the behavior of MacDonald's car, he thought, "Whoa, he's either gonna win this thing or crash."[5] On the second lap, MacDonald lost control coming off the fourth turn. As the car began to slide, he came across the track and hit the inside wall, igniting the gasoline in his fuel tanks (approximately 70-100gallons) which caused a massive fire. His car then slid back across the track, causing seven more cars to be involved.Ronnie Dumancrashed, spun in flames and hit the pit lane wall, and was burned.Bobby Unserhit another car, and Johnny Rutherford's car on its left rear tire, and crashed into the outside wall.Chuck StevensonandNorm Hallalso crashed. Popular driver Eddie Sachs was blinded by the smoke, hit MacDonald's burning car, and died in the fire before he could be freed. MacDonald was pulled from the wreck and taken into the infield hospital, burned beyond recognition. His lungs were seared from flame inhalation, causing acute pulmonary oedema. He died at 1:20 in the afternoon.[3] The crash was well-documented in film and still images, and shown worldwide. For the first time in its history, a red flag stopped the Indy 500. Partially in response to pressure from the media, USAC mandated required that cars carry less fuel, a change that also led every team to switch from gasoline tomethanolprior to the next year's Indy 500.[6]

According to something I read (I believe it was in an issue of Sprint Car & Midget) they found the lemon that Sachs used during the race in Rutherford's car after the terrible tragedy. Sachs kept the lemon hanging from his car's dash during the race and would suck on it from time to time. Thanks for that Big Fish!
