Peters Extends NCRA Points Lead with 81 Speedway Victory

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 16, 2008 - Park City, Kansas - Current series points leader Mike Peters of Wichita, Kansas became the first repeat winner on the 2008 race season as he held on to win the 25 lap O'Reilly/NCRA sprint car presented by ICM/Ethanol feature Saturday night at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kansas. The event also included Steve King Foundation Night as $1455 was raised through 50/50 and silent auctions.

Peters and his Mid-America Millwright sponsored Schnee chassis started on the pole and quickly took the lead over outside front row started Jon Freeman as the field took the green. Marc Robe, rookie Koby Barksdale and Chad Humston gave chase as Peters and his Don Ott powered sprinter quickly opened a ten car length lead. Robe over took Freeman for the runner up position on lap two while Barksdale, who won the last event held at Dodge City Raceway Park, passed Freeman for third on lap four.

Barksdale was not done there as the divisions leading rookie took over second on lap six while Humston worked his way into the third position one lap later. The top three would pull away from the field with Peters now only two car lengths lead over Barksdale with Humston close behind. Humston would make his move around Barksdale for second in turn two on lap nine before the red flag would wave when Barksdale slid off the top of turn four, hit the guardrail and flipped. He was uninjured but was done for the night.

The restart saw Peters, Humston and Freeman the top three as the front two cars took off from the rest of the field on the restart. Peters would hold a three car length lead near the races midway point while behind them, "B" feature winner C.J. Johnson, who came into the night second in the point standings, worked his way into fifth from his thirteenth starting position.

On lap twenty, Humston rode Peters rear bumper and one lap later passed the 1987 series championship dirt car champion entering turn three to take the lead. His lead would be short-lived however as the next time around he would slide off the top of turn two, relinquishing the lead back to Peters.

That was the break he needed as he went the final four laps unchallenged to pick up his second feature victory of the season. Humstons first career NCRA sprint car start netted a second place finish while C.J. Johnson's run to the front ended in third place. Freeman held on to fourth with Robe rounding out the top five.

The eight lap heat races for the 23 car field were won by Freeman, Peters and Humston with C.J. Johnson taking home the twelve lap "B" feature.

The next event for the O'Reilly/NCRA sprint car division presented by ICM/Ethanol will be next Saturday night, August 23, at Mid-Nebraska Speedway in Doniphan, Nebraska. Drivers will then load up and head to Hutchinson, Kansas for the conclusion of the Hutchinson Nationals, which was ppd. by rain after heat races were completed a couple weeks ago.

We made the trek from Lawton to 81 speedway last night. Koby was running well and I felt like he was certain to finish top 3, and most likely win again. Unfortunately the crash put an end to those hopes. Thankfully he is not hurt and he has 5 days to get his car back together for the two NCRA races next weekend.

I want to commend the folks who run 81 Speedway. The whole program and the atmosphere at that track was really awesome. The facility was clean and bright and the music was upbeat and fun. The announcers who drove around on the golf carts doing interviews and giving us play by play are really good as well. I loved the intermission. They have the drivers come down to the front straight with their cars and let the fans out on the track with them to get autographs and take pictures. What a great way for fans to get to meet all the drivers. Over all it was a good show that the whole family could enjoy and the admission was only $8 for adults and $5 for kids! Thank you to 81 Speedway and their promoter. Good Job!

I have to agree 100% that 81 speedway is a cut above the rest. If you ever get a chance to go it's worth the drive.

I have been to 81 three or four times and I always look forward to the trip.
