Forsberg scores third Placerville win to cap off $4000 weekend of success

By Bill Sullivan

PLACERVILLE, CAAuburn native Andy Forsberg gave his mother a pair of presents over Mother’s Day weekend. It wasn’t in the form of jewelry or flowers but he certainly has some extra cash to do that now after winning a total of $4000 in his A&A Stepping Stone #92 sprint car over the weekend. Following a victory Saturday night at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Forsberg drive to his third win of the season at Placerville Speedway Saturday night to win $2000 on Cold Springs Community Church Night.

“I want to thank my mom and all the moms out here tonight for everything they do for us, Happy Mother’s Day,” said Forsberg. “Last weekend were awful, we struggled and this weekend everything came together for us. The track was great tonight, I was able to run the top and that’s where I like it, I’m kind of stuck in my ways because even when the bottom is fast I still like running the fonz. I need to thank my crew and especially my dad for all their help with this team and a big thatnk you to the Cold Springs Community Church for their sponsorship of this night.”

Forsberg started eighth in the 25-lap feature event, a race that saw a number of caution periods and restarts. The original green flag had Placerville’s James Sweeney pulling from the pole position into the lead where he was challenged by defending track champion Greg DeCaires of Elk Grove.

With two laps complete DeCaires drove to the inside of Sweeney and muscled into the lead traveling down the backstretch.while Sweeney defended the second position from Sacramento’s Willie Croft, David Robinson Jr. of Foresthill and Forsberg who was already into the top five.

Seven laps into the race the red flag flew when Kyle Hirst of Loomis flipped upside down in the third and fourth turns. Once the race restarted DeCaires set the pace and Forsberg overtook Sweeney for the second place. After pursuing DeCaires for eight laps, Forsberg overtook the lead on the 17th lap in turn two.

Once in front, Forsberg drove to a lead of several car lengths while DeCaires battled with Robinson, Croft and Sweeney. When the checkered flag flew Forsberg picked up his third win of the season here followed by DeCaires, Robinson, Croft and Colby Wiesz of Colfax who started 19th and charged to the front.

The Pure Stock division had a season high 19 cars this week, all trying to get their hands on the $200 bonus to win. This event took multiple attempts at a start, at one point 23 laps had been completed under yellow and only one lap had been scored in the race.

Pole sitter Danielle Clauson of Placerville took the intial lead of the event and overcame a backstretch collision with Rick Grunert of Woodland to maintain the position for a single file restart. When the green flag flew again Clauson set the pace before former track champions Mike McClure of Nevada City and Tom Tilford of Citrus Heights moved into the top two positions. McClure moved into the lead on the second lap. Two laps later McClure and Tilford traded some fender paint in the third turn which resulted in McClure spinning off the track and Tilford taking the lead.

Once in front, Tilford never relinquished his lead in an event that started with 19 cars and concluded with only 8 cars on the track. The 2006 track champion was followed across the line by Brian Stevens of Pollock Pines, Kris Wirth of Pollock Pines, and Ryan Stanley of Nevada City.

“I’d also like to wish my Mom a happy Mothers Day,” said Tilford. “I think this is the third year Tilford Racing has won here on Mothers Day and my wife is pregnant now so I guess this one goes to her too. We want to thank Pastor Don and the Cold Springs Church for the extra money to win tonight. I think its great that they shared that bonus with the other divisions tonight.”

Pro Stock racing saw Dan Brown Jr. of Nevada City pick up his fifth win of the season. Brown started the 15-lap feature event in the fourth position and with three laps down took the lead from early race leader Jeff Arbogast of Auburn. Once at the point Brown drove to a lead of several car lengths to drive his way to a clean sweep for the night, winning his heat race and the feature event. Brown was followed across the line by Ray Trimble of Auburn, Forryst Carnett of Placerville, Arbogast and Dennis Armstrong of El Dorado.

“It was nice to have a few more cars to race with tonight,” said Brown. “I need to thank my dad for his help and wish my mom a happy mothers day here tonight.”

The three track regulars were joined on Saturday by the Midget Lites of the Bay Cities Racing Association. In this event Doug Nunes of Kingsburg drove to his scond consecutive Placerville win. Nunes started in the fourth position, Rick Holbrook took the initial lead of the race until the fourth lap when Nunes took the lead. Nunes was followed across the line by Doug Hunting, Sam Corso and Chris Glass.

Racing continues this Saturday night at Placerville Speedway for the sieventh Hoosier Racing Tires, New Car Dealers, Coors Light championship event of the season. Winged Sprint Cars, Pro Stocks, Pure Stocks will be joined by the Nor Cal Dwarf Cars in the final event prior to the Memorial Day weekend break.
