KRUSEMAN SWEEPS PERRIS WEEKEND
Sunday, 10 February 2008
Perris, Calif... Cory Kruseman of Ventura, Calif. won his second 30-lap USAC/CRA main event of the weekend Saturday at the Perris Auto Speedway. Starting the feature race in the 12th position, "The Kruser" put his Lucas Oil / Agromin No. 21k Viper ahead of Mike Spencer, Temecula, Calif., moments before accepting the white flag.
"My guys gave me a good car again tonight, but I think it was more the case that guys were making a few mistakes here and there and we were able to capitalize on them," Kruseman said after his third straight Perris win dating back to the November running of the Kindoll Classic.
David Cardey, Riverside, Calif., started on the pole and led the first 12 laps of the event in the Glenn Crossno / ITI Performance No. 83 Viper. Spencer, who earlier in the evening set fast time in the Ron Chaffin / Temecula Valley Pipe & Supply No. 50 Maxim, had a scare on the second lap of the race when he climbed Tony Jones' (Norco, Calif.) left rear tire.
Jones' Alexander Trucking / La Villa Restaurant No. 4 DRC would suffer a flat tire in the incident. Impressively, the defending series champion would return to action with a fresh tire and would eventually edge the Mark Preistley / Roy Miller Freightlines No. 7 Bullet driven by Manhattan Beach, California's Garrett Hansen at the finish line for fourth-place.
The only flip of the race occurred on a lap-ten restart after second-place Danny Sheridan couldn't recover from bicycling his mount through the first turn. Josh Ford made contact with Sheridan while he was flipping. Fortunately, neither driver was hurt, but both were done for the night.
Sheridan and Ford's departure from the race not only moved Kruseman into the top-five for the first time, but gave him and his crew chief Mike Nigh an opportunity to make some much needed adjustments.
"The bottom was really pretty slow," Kruseman later said. "I tried a few slide-jobs that were in the middle of the race track and I couldn't seem to get the car to stay where I needed it to stay. We were way too tight until we had that red (flag) for Sheridan, which allowed us to come in and make some changes to the car that really helped."
Led by the legendary Bruce Bromme, Jr., Spencer's crew also made some helpful changes. In fact, Spencer would relieve Cardey of the lead three laps after the restart. One circuit later, Kruseman dropped Cardey to his eventual finishing position and set the stage for a showdown between Friday's top-two finishers.
With both drivers running hard along the cushion, Kruseman methodically inched his way closer to Spencer. Kruseman showed Spencer a wheel with a few unsuccessful slide-jobs, which ultimately added to the drama for what would be his second late-race pass in as many nights.
"The good thing was that I was able to show him a nose enough times that it was going to force him to drive harder and harder, and that's what brings out mistakes in people," Kruseman explained of his strategy leading up to his lap-29 slide-job. "You could see what was happening there at the end and it was going to come down to how well we were able to get off turn-two. If we got off turn-two good enough, then I knew I was going to be able to make it work down at the other end."
