A lot has been said about World of Outlaws verses High Limit on Hoseads. (That may be somewhat of an understatement).
The racers we don't hear enough about are the top tier racers that follow neither series. In the past, people would say a driver was "running a true outlaw schedule". More recently, I've head people say a driver is "running a pick & choose schedule". That would make the first group true outlaws and the 2nd group pickers and choosers? Maybe we could come up with a better name for this group?
Renegades? Nah, that's the name of a race group.
Privateers?
Bounty Hunters?
Drifters?
Free spirits?
Ghost riders?
What do you tink? Do you have any good, descriptive names for top tier, independent sprint car racers?...

You answered your own question, A True Outlaw should be called that, An Outlaw. Show up on their own free will and attempt to take home the prize.
The WoO & HL race on a schedule chosen by others! The HL have a lot more wiggle room to do some Outlaw racing. The WoO not so much!

The World of Outlaws traverse the country like a band of gypsies going from town to town taking your money, whiskey, women & self respect.
Is that 'outlaw' enough for you? Sheesh.
Anyone else could be called a scavenger, picking over the leftovers.

So, non-corporate racers then?

I agree with you, to a point. But, and this here's your big but, a case could be made that most of the top winged sprint car talent is contractualy obligated to racing with WoO & H-L. But not all the top talent is.

Before corporate sprint car racing took hold, tracks would give these guys(big name drivers) "show up money".
