Before corporate sprint car racing took hold, tracks would give these guys(big name drivers) "show up money".

So, they were Hired Guns?
When I was kid, the out of town racers were referred to as Foreign Iron.

Trouble is, some fella glommed onto the outlaw name decades ago for marketing a corprate sprint car series.

Waylon and Willie and the Outlaw Country genre was big at the time. It makes sense considering that Ted started the Outlaws in 1978.
