ASCS / Wesmar Challenge Leader Board
Press Release Submitted by BigDog on 06/27/2007 at 10:34 PM Send To Friend | Report Press Release
Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (June 27, 2007) – Gary Wright may be clinging to a slim six-point lead as the O'Reilly American Sprint Cars on Tour National series moves on to Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, MO, on Saturday night.

But the ASCS / Wesmar Challenge Leader Board for the O'Reilly ASCoT National series has a different look to it, with points awarded based solely on podium finishes.

After capturing three of four wins in the ASCS Northern Plains Speedweek, with a runner-up finish in the other event, Louisiana's Jason Johnson has climbed ahead of Wright in Wesmar Challenge points.

Both "The Ragin' Cajun" and "The Texan" have recorded 13 podium finishes, with six wins apiece.  But Johnson has edged ahead of Wright in the ASCS / Wesmar Challenge by posting four runner-up finishes, while Wright has posted just one runner-up finish.

With Johnson three points ahead of Wright, 29 to 26, Wright is on the bubble as only two drivers from each series will receive invitations to the ASCS /Wesmar Challenge, which will take place during the Devil's Bowl Winter Nationals in Mesquite, TX, on October 13.

Closing in on Wright, just two points back in the Wesmar Challenge, is the same driver that is nipping at his heels in the series $50,000 championship points race; Wayne Johnson.  Johnson has posted a dozen podium finishes in 20 O'Reilly ASCoT National features thus far in 2007.

Thus far in 2007, 31 different drivers have recorded at least one feature win in 62 winged ASCS features throughout the country.

A total of 498 different drivers have competed in at least one of the 62 winged ASCS events through June 23, with the wingless Canyon Region drivers bumping the total to 546.

Among the movers in the Regional charts is 18-year-old Matt Tiffany of Daytona Beach, FL.  After collecting his first career ASCS feature win over the past weekend, Tiffany has moved atop the Rebel Region's Wesmar Challenge points.

The top two drivers in ASCS / Wesmar Challenge points for the National Tour and each of the eleven winged Regions at the September 15 cutoff date will earn invitations to the October 13 ASCS / Wesmar Challenge at the Devil's Bowl Speedway Winter Nationals in Mesquite, TX.

The ASCS / Wesmar Challenge will be run in two 15-lap segments, with an inversion following the first segment.  Passing and finishing points will be in effect for both segments, with the top points earner coming away with a new Wesmar Racing Engine.

Drivers earn points towards the Wesmar Racing Engines Challenge by earning three points for a feature win, two points for a runner-up finish and one point for each third-place feature finish.  A driver must compete in at least 60% of a respective Region's events and be a registered member of the American Sprint Car Series to represent that Region in the ASCS / Wesmar Racing Engines Challenge.

Current ASCS / Wesmar Racing Engines Challenge Points:

Only drivers that are listed currently meet eligibility requirements for the ASCS/Wesmar Challenge, including registered members of ASCS that have competed in at least 60% of a series' events.
