What was the deal with Danny Peace? Like it or not, his name is attached to one of the greatest seasons in sprint car history[1989]. Was it his fault or the woman he hooked up with? Opinions please

Story of my life, flat tires and flat chested women...... Does it really matter who's fault it was? I assume you refer to the folding of the team due to some accused financial improprieties. What a run they had and what an addition for sprint cars while it lasted.

Interesting thread but not very informative. Randomly found this while looking something else up. So what was the deal with the 8D and Danny Peace that won half of the races it entered in 1989? Anyone who is left on this board know?

I remember he was some rich younger dude that got hooked on sprint car racing, bought the best of everything and hired a high profile driver and mechanic. Money seemed to be no issue and it showed, they had an allsome year. I heard that the owner had some financial issues, not sure if a woman was involved. I don't think Wolgang was suprised when the bottom fell out. Good times.

He wasn't rich, but his older girlfriend was involved in stealing millions from HUD in real estate deals.   Not sure what jail time he did in all of this, but he knew what was going on.    Wolfgang didn't know what was going on until everything started falling apart.

I can't remember his girlfiends name but I remember wondering where the heck is this kid getting the money to fund this,  He was really young as in early 20s and I think the girlfriend was 40 or so.  It made much more sense when the news broke about her arrest on federal charges of stealing from HUD.  I don't think Danny Pease got into any legal trouble as apparently she stole the money and he spent it.  But that was the end of the team.  I always thought DP motorsports stood for Danny Pease but maybe it was what she was doing to HUD lol.

If I remember the story correctly, once the story broke it all made sense.   There didn't seem to be a clear indication of where he got his money.  (no family ties, no business)   I also remember that there was a second team that he was involved with.   The one that he was the owner of, all of the equipment got repossessed, but on the other team he was just a sponsor and that team got to keep the equipment.   The other team was a local/regional team, but I dont remember who it was.   I don't remember if the 8D team kept their equipment or if it was the other team that got to keep thier equipment.  

Wolf shrugged the guy off a few times according to his book saying yeah,  this kids got the money to fund a WoO team.   But later the kid showed up with money and plenty.   Turned out his GF was skimming millions from HUD.   They went with Brian Schnee and John Singer on Engines and Duece Turril as Crew Chief.    Doug swore their success was that the team was solid but Chevy had come out with a new head that year and everyone went with the new head and SINGER didn't knowing it would take awhile for them to work the bugs out.   They simply outran em for the first two thirds of the season.

Don't know what all happened but know the GF and Got into a lot of trouble.   Doug ran with the Williams Brothers the next year also a 8D

I think the girlfriend's name was Louella Williams or something like that.  

Reba Louise Lovell was his girlfriends name and she stole a little over 2 million from HUD if I remember correctly. Not sure whatever became of Mr. Peace but he sure had some fun for awhile!

Good info. To close this out, here is a link to the story on the girlfriend being charged. Kind of wild that she was charged in June of 1989, in the middle of the season. I guess everything was paid for by then.

If I remember right from Wolf's book,  The car pretty much paid it's own way that season and by cherry picking both USA and WoO they had a stellar season.   Best winged race I ever seen was Him and Bobby Allen were on their way back to PA from the Knox Nationals and ran a All Star race at Bloomington Indiana.   Wolf on top and Allen on the bottom side by side almost entire fourty laps.  Wolf Edged him out but it was close.
