Brian Brown – The Defense Begins!

(Bill W) April 16, 2008 – 2007 Knoxville Raceway track champion, Brian Brown, will begin his defense of that prestigious crown this Saturday night! Competition will be as fierce as ever, but the Grain Valley, Missouri sprint car chauffer is confident in his team as well as himself. The Doogs SuperClean #21 will start things out on Friday night at Nebraska Raceway Park near Greenwood for with some ASCS-Midwest vs. ASCS-Northern Plains action.

With several heavy hitters throwing their hat into the ring at Knoxville, naturally the ante is going to be higher. Brian sees it as an opportunity. "When you run at Knoxville, whether it's a weekly show or not, you've got to go against some of the best competition in the country," he says. "It looks like this year will be no different with guys like Brooke (Tatnell), Justin (Henderson) and perhaps my uncle (Danny Lasoski) coming off the World of Outlaws tour to run. Factor that with guys like Skip (Jackson), Billy (Alley), Jake Peters in a 410, (Mark) Dobmeier, and more guys than I can even name running, it's going to be tough. It's going to give us 10-15 guys that plan on winning every single night. When you've got guys who have been on the Outlaw tour and won…that gives you a good baseline to improve every single weekend as a team."

Who is the real winner with all of this talent assembled at the famous ½ mile? "The fans are the beneficiary of it all," says Brian. "We are too. Our focus this year will not be on everyone who is there, we'll just concentrate on our car running good. If we do that, we'll have a chance at winning any given night."

Last year, Brian tracked down Dusty Zomer to win his first career title. Consistency and a stretch of three straight wins in late June and early July were imperative. "I think the key for us, was that run in the middle of the year," he remembers. "I think we came from 17th on opening night to win it, and that was a huge shot in the arm! That makes you feel like Superman doing that. We were feeling pretty good during that time in June. It was after the Outlaws came, and they didn't come back until the Nationals in August. When they did come back, it put things in perspective for us (Brian did qualify for the A through the B and won hard-charger honors). Having some of them around all year will really help us, I think. They may take our money some weeks, but having them around benefits us, and Knoxville Raceway."

In late 2004, Brian teamed up with Tim and Gina Doogs after being released from the Casey's General Stores World of Outlaws team. It has been the best thing that has happened for him personally and professionally. "It's just a good team, everyone has their strengths," he says. "Now that we have someone like SuperClean backing us too, it makes us that much stronger. I'm at ease not having to look over my shoulder every day wondering if I'm getting fired, and they don't have to wonder if I'm quitting either. It's just a good deal, and being together for three or four years is the key I think. There are people starting new teams all the time and think they're going to dominate, but that's not the way it usually happens. This is 90% mental and 10% physical, and if you believe in your team, and they believe in you, it goes a long way!"

So far, the partnership with SuperClean has been a win-win for both sides. Knoxville fans will be treated to the new primarily purple look of the #21. "They've been a big supporter of sprint car racing over the years through the Knoxville Nationals and the Month of Money last year with the World of Outlaws," says Brian. "Joel and Craig and everyone at SuperClean have been super to us. We've built a great relationship that we hope we can carry on for a long time. I think we've done a great job promoting, and that is made easier with a great product! At Knoxville, we'll have a 'SuperClean Fan of the Night' that receives at SuperClean gift pack, so that's a great deal too. I think the best way to represent them is to end up in Victory Lane on Saturday night!"

Brian has had success at Nebraska Raceway Park, and hopes to equal his victory of one year ago on Friday night. "We've won four of eight there," he says. "It's one of my favorite tracks. I'm sorry we missed the two-night show there because of rain. We're looking forward to it this week."

Brian's Q&A

Ben asks: Why do you think so many drivers are choosing to compete at Knoxville this year?

Brian answers: I think the gas prices have a lot to do with it. So do the methanol prices. The diesel is high, but so is the methanol. Methanol has went from around $1.50 a gallon to…I've seen some places at $5 or $6 a gallon this year. That may not seem like a lot, but we can burn up two or three gallons just wheel-packing some nights. Also, if you're choosing not to run on the road, why would you not choose the "Sprint Car Capital of the World" to race every week? It's the nicest facility, nicest track, and nicest people from Cappy on down to the guy cleaning the bathroom. It's top notch, so if you're going to race, it's the place to be.
