My wife and I will be making the trip to Port Royal this coming Saturday for the very first time, I am looking for any good to know tips as in parking, seating, favorite foods ( track or local). I don't go East very often so I am looking forward to the trip. Thanks in advance.

There is not a bad seat in the house and parking is not a problem. If you get there early, you can park inside the fairgrounds, otherwise there is a school across the street with plenty of parking. The only thing you have to watch out for is the season ticket holder seats are spread throughout the grandstands and not just the normal top three rows etc. The reserved seats have stickers, so just make sure you don't put a blanket down on someone's reserved seat. There are a few good local restaurants (VIP an Italian restaurant is close to the track and has good Pizza and Subs) but in all honesty you can't go wrong with the food sold at the track and it is reasonably priced. There are no restrictions if you prefer to bring outside food and drinks into the grandstands. Have a great time!

I like parking across the track at the school and walking across.   Great concessions at the track.   An all open wheel show will be awesome over 60 sprints wing/wingless/silver crown you picked a great night for first time there for sure. Sitting coming out of 4 is really good watching them running the wall and the bottum slicing dicing all night is a great spot.

I think it's 8th street, turn right and park in the lot there as opposed to the one inside the fairgrounds which can be pretty packed for a big show. Food is great at the track especially the sausage and the fries. Watching a race from the infield is fun, and you can get pretty close to the track. I've heard people rave about the pit grandstands if you're getting a pit pass. I'm pretty sure it's the biggest "pit" grandstand around.

I agree with where to park.  I would never park in th fairgrounds for any big show when I used to go there.

You want to sit at least 5-6 rows up. The bottom rows have a lot of obstruction in the way of fences and hand rails that partially blocks the view of the front stretch.

Bring some Hoosiers along if you can...and I don't mean folks from Indiana.

Which way are you coming from the West? If its the Pa. Turnpike, RT. 322 from Harrisburg is the obvious highway & very pretty, but 74 north from Carlisle is really "back road beautiful". If you're on US 80, Rt, 144 is a bit of a shortcut & pretty wild.... only 2 lane road I've ever seen with a runaway truck ramp! NOT recommended if you're pulling a trailer ;)

If I were driving from the west via the PA Turnpike I would exit at 189 (Willow Hill Exchange) and take PA75 north into Port Royal.  PA75 is certainly a very pretty back country 2-lane drive.  The road is in relatively good shape.  You biggest worry is deer.

I want to thank everyone for their suggestions, we are heading out early in the morning. I look forward to seeing a new track and watch some of the locals. I am a USAC guy but I watch regularly on FLO so at least I will know some of the names. Thanks again.

Pretty unique... I've met plenty of Pa. guys who go to Indiana for wingless racing, but I think you're the first I've heard to do the reverse.... most USAC fans are comitted to wingless & would take offense at the term "wingless".... they wanna say "sprint cars" or "traditional sprint cars"

I prefer wingless, but like 'em both....

I bet that is nice... right past Path Valley, no?

Never been North of Path Valley on that road...but I try to go for a swim at Cowan's Gap Reservoir to the South before PV races. Purty country! :)

Well, I made it home fine.

Thanks again for all suggestions, we ran a little tight on time so we didn't stop to eat before we got there but I had a burger and a dog from the track and the food was good, the lines were fairly long but it didn't take longto get through them.

I was surprised by the surface, watching on FLO all I knew was how slick this place could get but when we got there it had plenty of water I thought, and it was smooth across. It didn't ake long for the track to get to the wall but it held up all night.

I am a Justin Grant fan so the feature was just fine by me, watching him run the boards to get back through the field was worth the trip, you would have thought the last corner pass of Bacon was for the win instead of third because the crowd was into it. Seavey was the smoothest up there and deserved the win and it was cool that a Eastern guy showed them that you could roll the middle as Alex Bright came home second.

The 410 feature went about as I expected with Macri and the Wagners running up front but it sure is exciting to watch Macri run up against the fence there.

The Silver Crown race was also good with a last lap pass for the win and multiple places to run.

The risk versus reward of running on the wall in one and two reminds me of Eldora before they changed the banking where yo could run anywhere you want but the wall is definately faster if you can finish the race.

The track is cool as can be if you ask me, Nice bleachers ,clean facility, neat wall, and the setting is incredible with the hills in the background, the church in 1, the bridge in 2, the houses down the backstretch, and the nice tunnel for fans to watch from the infield. Someday I'm sure I will be back to PA and when I do I will try to get Port Royal in my plans.

Well, I'm from Ohio not Indiana so my background is winged racing. We used to go to Atomic when I was a kid and then Eldora, Lima, etc. I didn't get into wingless as much until Waynesfield opened up just a half an hour from me and started running them. I like both as well but you are more likely to find me at a wingless race, and as Shakespeare once wrote,"What's in a name".

Glad you had a good time. It is always neat to go to a new track for the very first time.

any thoughts on the macri/mike wagner run in on the front stretch?

the deal between macri and logan could qualify as a racing deal.  this one looked like macri just wrecking somebody.  he said after the race you can't see cars that are next to you.  he's right...i don't drive race cars and i don't know how they avoid a wreck every lap which i said after the deal with logan.  if i did...my first goal would be learning how to race around other cars.  i don't change lanes on a highway without knowing somebody isn't there.

Is it really on Macri?  He was the leader and coming to the fence off the bottom driving down the front strectch with a clear line of sight.  Wagner's LF was to Macri's RR, which still means to me, Marci still has the line and he was coming up to the fence.

Mike Wagner has raced long enough to know better than to go into a hole as such.  Did he get squeezed, sure.  Was there enough room if he got squeezed, nope.   Miscalcuation on his part IMO.
