I don't think anyone has ever mentioned this on any Flo or DV broadcast. If one of the top three are light at the scale, like WG last night, does the 4th place car need to go scale?

Do the top 5 go to the scales at a WoO show? Not sure.

I am not sure how many go to the scale.  But there is not an excuse to come up light at the scale.  When the car is completely empty it should weigh 1425 with the driver in it.  If you cut it too close you could get disqualified.  See Eldora last year and Williamsgrove last night.

I was at both races.  I for one was very surprised on both occasions.

Let's go Sprint Car Racing!

Knoxville - Best Track In the USA!
Eldora - 2nd Best Track in the USA!

For some reason, I remember extra cars going to the scales just in case.  I'm not sure what the protocol is, but I remember 4 or 5 cars going to the scales after a race.  ???

I wish I could remember last year at Eldora when it happened.  I sit in section A right accross from the scale.  I can't remember if they weighed more than the top 3.  I do remember, 1st place was 4 pounds over, 2nd place was 4 pounds under, and 3rd place was 50 pounds over.

Yes, and when car is set up they need to have used worn tires on it and expect driver to lose a couple pounds of weight during nite  Those cars were all running near out of alcohal and would probably make weight if race was 1 lap shorter.

For some reason, I believe I've been to races where an extra car was either sent, or went just in case.  (I think it was at Knoxville each time)   Unsure if a rule though.

Maybe they should change to Top 5, so when someone is light next in line would have weighed in.

Chapter 3 - Section 6

A. All race cars must weigh a minimum of 1425 pounds with a driver fully prepared to compete in the car throughout an entire event.

B. Additional bolt-on weight will be permitted, but must be mounted and fastened to the frame and/or chassis in a secure manner. All additional bolt-on weight must be mounted and fastened in the area between the bottom frame rails and axles but mounted no higher than the upper rails. At the discretion of World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Official’s additional bolt-on weight may be mounted and/or fastened forward of the front axle, but not past the front torsion bar.

C. The addition of bolt-on weight during any yellow and/or red flag condition will not be permitted.

D. The World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series scales will be available and open to scale cars prior to hot laps at every event.

E. All cars will be weighed during qualifying.

F. When instructed to do so by World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Officials, cars must proceed immediately to the scale area. Crew members and/or other race team personnel will not be permitted in the area and/or to approach the car prior to reaching the designated area until it is weighed and released by World of Outlaws  Sprint Cars Series Official.

G. Except for extenuating circumstances drivers must remain seated in their typical racing position in the vehicle during the scaling process unless released by World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series Officials. If a driver leaves the car without prior consent it could result in disqualification from the event in which the car is competing in.

H. Unless instructed otherwise the top three (3) finishers from the “Feature Event” are required to report to the scale area to be weighed. Failure to report and/or drive directly to the scale area may result in disqualification from the event. Extenuating circumstances will be considered.

I have heard of drivers driving through mud after a race to try to collect a few pounds. A well prepared track wouldnt give this option.

Even though I may not know you, I
care what most of you think!

Used to see late models do that all the time. Haven't seen many sprint cars do it.

I think at the Nationals I have seen the top 5 go across the scales. For almost a decade I always thought it was a pointless thing for guys to go to the scales because it never seemed like anyone was ever close then last year there were 2 instances at Eldora where a guy was light at the scales. The 2nd Kings Royal I sat across the scales which has a screen showing the crowd the weight (if your eyes are good enough). During qualifying I watched the cars go across particularly the fast cars like Larson, Sweet, Courtney, Schatz, Rico, etc. None of them were even close to being light and almost over 100+lbs over weight

I remember someone pointing to the fact that Schatz was almost always WAY above the minimum weight.  (no fat joke intended)  Either he or Ricky stated being light was not going to help hook the car to the track.  I don't remember where I heard or read this, but I remember it from years ago.  If I'm not mistaken, I seem to remember them winning a race and being well over 100 pounds "heavy."  Maybe even more----in the 1600's?

I remember Schatz's number being well over 1500lbs and just thinking about all of the fat jokes that people would make  and in a postiive way like dude kicked their butts all those years even having a heavier car. Then Sweet and Larson went over the scales and i think both were only within maybe 25-30lbs lighter than him. I just remembered thinking it was interesting that physically they were no where near 25-30lbs lighter than him.

Sammy was anal about weight. We watched him run out of fuel in a B main at the Nationals one year and then say if he'd had more fuel he probably would have been too heavy to pass enough cars anyway. I couldn't stop laughing.

Being heavy never seemed to bother Steve all that much. He wasn't always the quickest qualifier but he raced pretty well.

Back in the day before the weight rules it was interesting to see what they'd do to qualify at the Nationals. Little bitty tanks. Light wings. No nerf bars. One rail rear bumper. It used to get stupid. Knoxville finally made some rules against that stuff.

Some guys bolt weight on the front to help keep the front end down. Nose around at your next outlaw race and you'll see some. Some you won't see because they hide it.

Regardless I've never understood why outlaw teams cut it so close. If you're relying on a certain amount of fuel in the car to make weight you're playing with fire. I'd think they'd weigh them with worn out tires and no fuel and water then add a few pounds for driver weight loss. But it still bites one now and then. I was surprised it got the 41 car. I bet it doesn't happen again. It was an expensive lesson.
