By the way, the car in the foreground was one of the last widebody coupes to be built. It came out the same year the narrow bodies took over at Lawton. The car was nearly perfect with a rare feature- the wood inside the car was perfect! It took a lot of time to pry it out! Oh well, it was still worth the $15 we paid for it.  Still is.

I have plans and I am almost sure that is a Laverne Nance super modified kit with an Edmunds body.

Several factors tell me that is a Nance super modified kit frame.

1. The bottom rail of the car looks like a Nance kit.

2.The steering mounts are the same as Nance mounts.

3. The top main rail kicks in at the bottom.

If you would like to talk to me about this email me at [email protected]

This particular drawing is an Edmunds design. Most of the cars that raced during the early seventies were of this design yet Edmunds didn't invent it. He only changed it to suit him. The big deal to me was that he only made 35 cars[supermodifieds] in his shop. He also got the cover of Hot Rod which in those days was a big deal, and then with Nance, Jelly, and a few others sold several of these cars to what would become the NCRA belt. When I was a kid the Edmunds body was the most prolific where we went. Even though i have come to like the other body styles, I guess you could say I have a loyalty to the style that first got me hooked. Thus I wanted an Original. There are a few out there, and I have still got a good copy as well as it being special to me anyway. I'll be okay. I'll call it a Doc Grice frame as that's pretty much what he built in those days.

My uncle had one of the Edmunds bodies. Him and his buds built the chassis and stretched the hood to accomadate a Chrysler straight 6 with three deuces, then later it had a Mopar 383 in it. Also a guy known back then as Cal Spurlock had one, but it was Chevy powered and looked really neat, I think his drivers name was Kayo Kavenger. Cal Spurlock went on to become C.K. Spurlock of Gambler Chassis fame. Man them were the good ol' days. My Uncles car can be seen on this link, almost to the bottom of the page.

David Johnson is his name that has the Edmund molds and his e-mail is.

[email protected]

He has a couple of vintage super modifieds and his boys race sprint cars at the Springfield track and maybe other tracks in the area.

There is another guy in Joplin who I guess has a big collection of old race cars and supers. His name escapes me right now, but he does run a wrecker service and a use car dealership I believe in Joplin. His shop is just west of the Flying J Travel Plaza off of 71 on Highway FF on the south side.

Back home in McPherson, KS finally!
