No guarantees but you might try a trip to the Knoxville nationals. Seems like theirs always one or two to look at. Maybe thats to far from you? I'm not sure where your from. I also know that Bruce Moore of Moore's Motor-sports has built at least one of these. If your interested I can get his number at our next race. Good Luck You should be sure to post some pictures as you go. Chris
Tell me how much money you got and I'll tell you how
fast you can go!

I too have been wanting to build a street legal car for some time now, but a single seater. My solution to the drive line problem is to build a street legal champ dirt car, longer wheel base, more room for drive line. There was a guy some years back that lived in the bay area (San Fran) I believe, that had a street legal sprinter with a 289 Ford and a C4 trans. His entire drive line consisted of 1 universal joint, that’s it. He used to be the pase vehicle for NARC. He told me that, as long as he was on the track, it was no problem. On the street however, when he was leaving a stop light, the back of the car would drop down beyond the range of the one u-joint if he got on the gas a LITTLE too hard. If he took off easy, it was OK.

THIS CAR IS STILL DRIVEN DAYLY.I KNOW BECAUSE JUST HELPED REDO TAIL&BRAKE LIGHTS.SOUNDS FUNNY I KNOW!
BRAKE LIGHTS`N`TAIL LIGHTS ON A SPRINTCAR.PEOPLE JUST LAFFF?AT ME,WHEN I
TELL THEM THAT!IT DOES`NT HAVE A HEATER.
OH YEA, IT`S IN ORANGEVALE,CA.

yes, a trip to the nationals parad will tell you most of the answers to a few of your questions , and most guys (like rod builders are) are willing to tell you everything about thier wip, (try that with a racer! expecially if you are racing in his heat) I seen two street legal cars last year (nationals)that pulled up to a traffic signal and took off like a drive to the store, they had to be automatic trans, the one car i have gotten close enuff to look over a bit had a streched frame to accomidate the transmission , with the location of the headers it was pretty tuff to tell how much longer the actuall wheel base was pretty neet ride , my hats are off to the fellas building them, there pretty cool, what a way to mix interests between a rod and a racecar , sorry, mines not street legal , although it starts on asphalt rather well, Just one more reason for asphalt, besides a parking lot !

Yes, we go to the Knoxville nats but usually, we are racing so, I don't have much time to have other fun. I have seen two there before. One looked pretty good from 50 yards, the other........not very nice. We don't know yet, if we'll be racing there this year, if not, I'll attend in the stands and have time to check out all the chicks,........I mean, finger licking good,........chicken strips. lol And maybe see a street sprint.
CAMFAB- that would be great if you could get his number ! "Get R Done" lol
FORDFAN- (or is it) NIMROD ?
Either way- I agree, headlights, brake lights ect......seems odd for some reason. lol
I will get the smallest I can get & still feel safe. I thought of making a led brake strip on the top of the wing as a third brake light. Maybe even a sequential turn signal like the old Cougars and hot rods of today. Do you have any photo's of the car ?
If you are the "fordfan", here's a few pic's of my Ford I built. My other toy. What Ford do you have ?
I'm a Chevy guy, this is my first Ford.
DIRTDEVIL- Do you race a usac car ? Any pics ? I love those cars.
I checked into the tranny, flywheel, and starter for the them and it's like 6-7 k ! If it weren't so expensive, it would be perfect ! I thought of the modified clutchless automatic powerglide but, from a stop, you have to ease into the throttle and then at speed, you can be on the gas while shifting into 2nd gear. It's not the way to go for the street. I believe the best/cheapest what to go is the "shorty" powerglide. What do you guy's think ?

Right now, all I have is my pickup (86 Ranger) and the wife’s car (99 Sable). Since I am on disability retirement, it may be awhile (if at all) before I can build my street legal champ car. I do have an engine and tranny for it already though. The engine is a 351 Cleveland short block. The heads are 4 barrel heads (4V). The tranny is a C6. I have been told that Ford made a version of the C6 that was used in vans that had a shorter tail shaft and housing than the regular ones, but identical other than that. So, between the short version of the tranny and the longer wheel base of a champ car, I HOPE I shouldn’t have a problem with room for the drive line.
As far as your first effort with a Ford goes, NICE. You show real promise. If we could just get you away from those Cheebies, just think what you could do. (Just joshing now).

Kevin,
I am fordfan and am the guy that wants to build the street legal champ car. NIMROD is the guy that responded to my post of June 12, where I talked about a street legal sprint car from the San Francisco Bay area and says he just helped do some work on it.

I assume the "Champ" cars are the Indy style. I know of a company (believe in Florida) that make sing;e & in-line two seat Indy cars. They use donor parts from a Chrysler. It's not like the real thing but, looks fun. If interested, I'll look up the web-site.

i would go with the in line version. then you can stretch it a little to fit tranny, foot pedals ect. mount the motor off of the side mounts on the block bolted solid to the frame. not with a horse shoe mount off the front of the motor. then you can bolt tranny to block and use tranny mount on cross member like stock.call keadings in campbell ca. they built one for high five pizza years ago. it was single seat. not steet legal i believe but drove like it.had all the sprint stuff. live axle winters rear end, bird cages, the whole bit.had automatic tranny. was stretched a little for more leg room. was exactly what you want, just needed to stretch it more for extra seat.

The problem with adding room for a longer cockpit and trans. is, it's already going to be stretched for a passenger. The limo look is what I'm trying to avoid. But, I may have to do it anyway. If I made it with a side pod, I could add a little room for me & the trans length wise plus, some width for throttle & brake pedal, without the limo look. Maybe the side pod is the way to go ?

And that would be the old, good looking ones, not these new atrocities.

If you try to build a two seat sprint car it is going to be difficult to make it look like a real sprint car. Why not build a track roadster? These proceeded sprints in many parts of the country and have a racey appearance while being much more "drivable" on the streets. Basically a track T is a 23 to 27 model T body with a sprint car nose. You can get bodies from several sources and the rest of parts can also be purchased or you can fabricate your own. I'd post a few examples but I'm computer illiterate.
Quinn used to race a track T on the board track in Altoona a few years back.

How about a Watson style Roadster? Driver is offset anyway, tank is so big that you can hide a Volkswagon drivetrain under it[register it just like the trikers do]. Firestone Indy 500 tires have a nice tread that's much like a dirt pattern.
