Joe Farley, OKC, 1971. Note the 2 carb set-up, good stuff. This was the week Joe won his first race in the Walker car.

Jim, Great Shot I remember this pic in the program. Notice something about those carbs, real Holleys no Bo-Laws, Willeys, Brasswell etc, if it was trick Lil Joe had probably modified it himself!!!

Talked to Shane yesterday and he is going to look up some of the old orgininal NCRA papers that his dad had from '71 he told me he remembers the first unoffical meeting the promoters had here at OKC in late '70 at the winternationals.

Looked through some of the old mans stuff the other day and dug up some old pic's of the #33,#13 & #76 what's neat is looking at some of the stuff in the back ground, some of the cars and some of the people, man have some of us changed!!!

These are from my personal collection. Got a few thousand pictures around. The top pic is Larry Hill & MP at Devils Bowl, I believe 81'or 82'. Hey David, I believe in the background, white T-shirt is Ochs!

Bottom pic is just Mike going out for hot laps. I may be wrong but at one time didn't they run 2 of these black cars, Peters in 1 & Gary Lee in the other? Good stuff, got a lot more.

By the way, didn't they win Hutch with this combination?

Cool Stuff Jim, I think I have some pics of a Champ Dirt car at Hutch of the same paint scheme, I assume same owner of the car cause Mike P. drove it to.

Jim, The top pic is a great shot, Larry & Mike at back of car, Charile Och in all white t-shirt at front of wing, Mike Ochs in yellow t-shirt, Jim Ochs standing next to Mike with his back to camera, Bruce Norwood ( I believe last name) kneeling by LR tire, I'm not sure who the guy standing on Charlie's left is. Missing from photo but at this race behind camera in stands is a young (maybe 5-6yrs old) Davey Ochs with those pliers on his belt even at this young age.

In the 2nd photo standing beside MP in car is Mike Ochs, in the white uniform beside KEAR's trailer is my boss Jerry Maxwell, standing behind car through the vee brace in those blue jeans is Shirley Kears.

They had this Nance sprint car and an idenical 100" Nance car. Mike did win Hutch in '81 with the 100" car we had taken the #10 up there also as B/U in case we needed it, we hot lapped both cars and even though the #10 was faster by a couple of tenth's on LH's stop watch we ran the #1 as it had a better dependablity record. MP won did a great job he was proud of that win.

I know at Knoxville right after this race Mike got hurt bad at the nationals in Mussatto's car, after that I believe John Johnson might have drove the sprint car after MP got hurt I don't remember them running the 100' car again until MP got healed up, the car that Gary Lee drove was painted in a very similar design but had silver striping, however I believe it was owned by the S&S trailer guy.

Yeah, what a great race in 81'. I was just there hanging out, not with any car, just wandering around. Do some more digging, may have some pictures from Hutch. Usually if I wasn't working on a car, I was taking pictures.

Hill was a wreck at Hutch that year. I remember the whole 50 laps, he was up on that old stage, pacing back & forth like a caged tiger, hell he paced so much he made ME nervous.

I was gonna get some pictures at DB last week, got my camera out of the truck & the batteries were dead. No pics.

If you guys want a picture of an old car or something let me know & I'll start digging. David, I've got a few that may really suprise you!!

More later Jim.

Well Shane just brought by some stuff on NCRA , 1ST President was GW Elkins, VP Dick Carson from Tulsa, Secratary Bob Walker from Tulsa, BOD's were Bud Carson, Art Couch, Lanny Edwards, Cotton Farmer, Bill Hall, Jack Merrick & Jim Powell.

Tracks were: OKC (Bud), Tulsa (Hugh Finnerty), 81 SPDY (Bill Hall/C.Ray), Hutchinson (Merrick), Enid (Powell), Lawton (Lanny), Amarrillo (GW), Devils Bowl (Cotton), Shrevport (Mar-Car).

'71 Tulsa was the 1st race, 81 SPDY 2nd race, Shrevport 3rd race, OKC 4th race, Hutch 5th race, Muskogee 6th race, Amarillo 7th race, Lawton 8th race & Enid 9th race.

Emmett was the 1st champion and an interesting note is he drove the #1 Budmobile at Tulsa winning at '81 finishing 7th but after that he ran the KCNW 1300 Zink car at the other races.

Grady Wade won OKC and led all 50LAPS and made $1850.00, Dale Reed won Amarillo and made $1100.00, Emmitt made $1570.00 at Hutch & $1279.00 for Tulsa.

Only 2 teams made all 9 events Harold Leep in Cates #2 and Aaron Madden in his own #1. Top 10 in pts. 1st Emmitt, 2nd Reed, 3rd Wade, 4th Leep, 5th Madden, 6th Copeland, 7th Harkness, 8th Shady, 9th Melvin Rogers & 10th Frankie.

D.E. Suggs & Benny Taylor; OKC 1971

So good to know Shane still has all of his dad's stuff. There is some real history there.

A lot of these B&W pictures are out of the old Oklahoma Racer programs that you could buy for thirty five cents. As a kid grandstand admission was 75 cents, my program was 35 cents, a large pop was 50 cents, so for under $2 I had all I needed. 3 hours of quality entertainment.

Got to looking, I've got probably 10 boxes of programs, some almost 40 years old, old NCRA year-books, WOO year-books etc. Yeah this stuff is priceless!! And a HUGE box of old T-shirts, even got my old orange Hill Racing T-shirt.Got 1 whole room in my house that is just pictures, trophies, collector cars, helmets, just cool stuff!

4 years ago I had a break in & some ass got about $10,000 worth of collectables! Had a ton of Dale Earnhart stuff from before 01'. That deal just killed me, because it had to be some-one who knew what I had.

Interesting point on 71' NCRA, the Muskogee race, Hahnled all 50 laps & made $980.00 Thats about half of OKC winners purse. Fast time at Muskogee was 23.16, new track record. Reynolds drove Pats car, timed in 20th & finished the A 10th.Grady Wade finished 2nd. The race was dedicated to the Jack Belk family. Jack had been killed in Topeka a month earlier.

Much more later, Jim

Jim, Sorry to here about Velma, I wasn't aware that she had been doing bad, just saw her awhile back with you guys at OKC. Know there isn't much I can do but if you need anything let me know.

The #1 that DE's driving was that Noel Crains car & was this the blue #711 that Everhart drove?

The car's that Benny built were neat cars I think a sprint car built on this frame design with spring front would still be fast today. Wonder if you can buy a good cross spring today!

Didn't DE drive one of these Taylor design frames for Craine at the big Tulsa track? I remember they had a car with this body design was sponsered by Janderburs Honda.

Yes you can buy a good cross spring today. POSIE'S has a few out there in the vintage race car circles. Never heard any complaints, there is a nylon layer between the leaves, and I think the leaves are polished enough to give a fluid feel. If there is a fluid feel to a cross spring! Standard or reverse eyes I'm sure are available. I'm sure they'll be represented April 4th OkC.

Weight is of course an issue, or at least most think it is. I often wondered about carbon fiber used for a cross spring for modern cars. Fiberglass has been said to work just fine. Yet there hasn't been a cross spring mounted on an open wheel car in 25+ years far as I know.

Ronnie Brotherton; OKC 1971. Gotta just love these old time ads.

Ronnie was rookie of the year 1962 & OKC modified champ in 1968. Got to know Ronnie a little the years his brother David drove for us. Kinda quiet, but just a neat guy. We lost Ronnie several years ago.

Not exactly sure, maybe David knows, but I believe this was a CAE car that later Stan Schoenburg drove?

Great picture of Shane passing Vogler. I can just see the whole grandstand erupting at once. I was the corner worker in turn # 3 when the Vogler/Johnson deal happened, got a great big long story on that one with some pictures! Get to that another day, Jim

This is how I remember race car drivers! Leep & Hahn, red bandana, Howerton red or blue! WOW!

Remember mid 80's when the USAC guys were here, Bettenhausen, Bigelow, Saldana & Engelhart would hot lap in open face helmets & bandanas, just to put on the SHOW! Man I miss that. This is

Leep from Oklahoma Racer 1971.

Ya know have thought about getting a 3 pc. hood like the 39 car has for my downtube car, sure was quicker and easier to get to the motor than trying to fight the whole hood and now with the downtubes , it is even more of a struggle , like those hoods good stuff.
