vande77,

Hey, if you go to the city council meeting in KV bring up this fact sometime. Ask them if anyone has noticed the amount of massively excessive drinking and public partying (and at 90% of it going on in daylight hours) at every NCAA Div. I football venue around the country INCLUDING Ames, IA and Iowa City, IA that for the most part the law HAS to have been told to stand down and be tolerant of the actions of the fans. There is a massively high % of public intoxication and I would bet a surprising high % are minors at these events and I have never seen law sweeping through parking lots on the offensive at a College FB game and I have been to dam near every home NU game tailgating for 20 years. There have to be pre event meetings that set the tone of the offense that these law efforts execute for such events, no question. At the least something is said to idle them down at college football. Maybe nothing is said and that is the unsaid rule to "bring it" for Nationals. I dont buy it cause I have lived it both ways and the way it was 20 years ago at KV. I have not gone in 5-6 years because it was not as fun as it was period if I spend $600 bucks for the weekend I want to have the time I had previously known it to be. I don't smoke weed, stumble around drunk, etc. but I sure as hell don't need cops everywhere I turn puffing chests and observe them hassling others, etc. It is not the only reason but it contributes in a large sense. No matter what is commented the law's approach at KV during the Nationals is NOT contributing to helping turn the attendance around period. I would predict for every ticket they issue to an out of town attendee that person will not be back and likely 2-6 people they know. Simple stats.

I've brought it up to the Mayor and the new City Manager. I know it is of great concern to the new city manager and the Mayor is born and raised in K'ville and has great concerns about the pattern as well.

Biggest issue they run into is State Hwy 14 that runs between the Raceway and HyVee. They can tell the city cops and the County Supervisors can talk to the Sherriff's department, but neither group has any jurisdiction over the Iowa State Patrol.

I do not attend the city council meetings as I do not reside within the city limits and do not pay city taxes and feel that it is not my place to tell them what to do (those that live in the city limits should be doing that IMO).

Been to the Nationals since 1974. Best time of the year. I have a great time. Never had any problems with police. Never have ran into any of them puffing their chests or getting in my face. Camp with some buddies who like to drink. We camp just off Hyway 14 on a side street. Police often cruise by and stop and chat. No hassles about my buds drinking at their camper. Never seen a police sweep through the campgrounds either. My friends have been doing this at the same spot since the early 90's. NEVER have had even a minor problem with the police or Hyway patrol in all my years going to Knoxvile. And that includes almost all weekly shows since 1989. I think the only ones who have problems with the cops are those folks who do things to attract their attention.

Last year was my first nationals experience. All though it was awesome, I have heard it used to be better. Yes I did see the police sweep our campground daily. Also heard of MANY minors being handed out. I think it would be nice just for the cops to stand back as long as everyone is being responsible!

Drunk in public and under age drinking is not being responsible. Neither is speeding or riding golf carts where they are not allowed. You do know the people that own the places where people camp can be held liable if someone gets hurt? Again, the cops can "sweep" where I camp as often as they want. I'm not doing anything wrong so I don't worry about the police. I have to wonder if some people are there for the RACES or for something else.

As I recall, I heard (on this board as well after the nationals), that many in the campgrounds had thefts occuring. Did anyone ever stop to think that maybe the police increased their presence in the campgrounds in an attempt to curb some of that behavior??

I never heard anyone ever tell me personally that the cops did a "sweep of the campground" and gave us tickets for open container or public intox.

If (and I am as guilty of this as anyone in my younger days) there were underage drinking going on, or someone causing a scene or drawing attention to themselves (being loud, obnoxious, or not capable of standing without falling down), what do they expect, the Police to just walk on by like nothing is going on?? If so, I'd like to know where exactly it is that they live where this is the norm (Compton, CA, downtown Detroit??).

Majority (99%) of the police and sherriff's in Marion County are good guys and just tell people to cool off, dump out their beer (if walking on a public sidewalk with it) and move on.

I saw in the local paper that DUI arrests/bookings into the Marion County Jail were down almost 20 to the 10 year average in 2011 (I think the # was 165), and public intox arrests were roughly 70. (THESE ARE STATS FOR THE ENTIRE YEAR OF 2011). IMO, that's not too bad when you consider a total poplulation in the county over 25,000 (Pella, Knoxville, Melcher-Dallas, Pleasantville, unincorporated areas are all part of Marion County) and multiple events that draw tourists throughout the year as well.

I know that I see as many DUI's in the paper during the winter months as I ever have in the Summer months. (I saw 5 last week), by my math, that's a higher % than the average of 3.17 per week in all of 2011.
