Here's what I would do. Instead of having a large invert for heat races I would have a large invert for the A main instead, when you can actually pass cars. Invert 4 or 6 in the heats and invert the top 20 qualifiers from the heat races by time for the A main. Make the A main 30 laps, Now you will see a RACE, not someone who timed 26th and passed no one in his heat or the A main, win from the pole and get up to 8th in points. Also, increase the passing points to 4 per position. Thoughts?
Oh yeah, I know.."it's the nationals, it's the greatest thing ever, don't change what ain't broke, the cream will rise to the the top"..blah blah blah...BS! We want to see a good show on prelim nights with the best drivers in the A main... and lots of passing. Large heat race inversions are obsolete and senseless when you can't pass in heats anymore.
|
Nope!!! It is the Nationals it is to be really hard to Qualify! It is the BEST race of the year!!! You have to fly to qualify! That is what brings the fans back year after year! Great feature both nights!!! That is all you can ask for!!!
Let's go Sprint Car Racing!

For the guy who says Knoxville & Eldora always have the BEST track prep.... you think you know more than Donnie Schatz???? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YrkHwkcerpo
|
Translation- I have not been running good over the last few years......I need all the help I can get. Lol!!!! Poor Schatz!!
Did you see the interview with Brian Brown. He owned it. He didn't try to pass blame on anyone else. Maybe Schatz should take lessons from Brownie!!
If you want only 50 to 60 cars to show up do it the other way. But the low budget guys will not show. You need the track wet or the cars coming out late will really be in trouble. And no with the point system you can't split the field in half either.
The NATIONALS......the GREATEST race of them all!!!
Let's go Sprint Car Racing!
Knoxville - Best Track In the USA!
Eldora - 2nd Best Track in the USA!

Only fair way is to run double heats and you accumulate points by flipping the the finishing order of the first heat. Time trials are a waste. Run 15 lap heat races, so you start up front in the first one, and everyone knows there is very little passing. Come that second round of heats when your winner is starting at the tail if he's fast and if he's good you'll see a great race. Knoxville is a great facility and the racing will be good, but when you get a track like this 2 nights in a row. Not so much. Shatz wasn't to happy with the prep, i'm sure many others felt likewise.
|
There will never be a fair way to do it as a dirt track changes from race to race. Even in your suggested double heat format, you're going to have to pill draw for heats that can be unbalanced, and then as you even noted, the track will be drastically different in the two heats. For instance, a very fast driver could be placed with a really weak field and draw up front for the first heat, utilize a fast/narrow track to get a win, and then charge through the second heat on a widened-out track against inferior competition.
Far too many people getting lost in the weeds of complaining about prelim night format that are ignoring that they primarily serve to set up Saturday night. Looking at the lock-ins and lineups, I'd say the format did its job.

Donny comments I'm sure we're shared by many. Brownie owning up to it was because they rarely get a sloppy wet surface and they flat out missed the set up. I bet brownie's crew chief gave somebody an ear full,

You used 42 exclamation points in just this thread.
Out of curiosity, why are you always shouting?

I am not shouting. Don't change something that doesn't need changed. The Nationals are the best race of the year. Like it or not they have the best format. Unlike the weekly Outlaw shows...that is the worst format in racing today.

So you were dropped on your and and ate paint chips as a child. I understand now.
Yes, you are wrong there. Some on here think they need to change the format.

Nice slogan for Smith Barney but in NO WAY applies to last nite's racing...
Schuchart timed 26th, started 3 in his heat by way of handicap, finished third, got the pole position by handicap & held it...
Timed 26th & didn't pass ANYONE the whole nite & you think he "EARNED" it????
& I'm a big Schuchart fan, but willing to face the facts
YOU can't handle the truth!!!!
|
Bingo! You can't even talk of ideas to make a broken outdated formula better though because...It's the Nationals! It's the best race of the year!

1 out of 10 heat races was not won from the front row so far. JJ Hickle won from 6th. It's not a surprise that almost all heats are won from the front row. That's been the norm for years now but it is a surprise that the driver to win one from 6th is a 410 and Nationals rookie. That's the coolest thing of the week so far.

There are two really cool stories this week.

Tasker Phillips
Congrats to both of them for making the A.

Wonder what these posts would look like if Knoxville had kept the full 10-car invert used until 2008 before Carl Wilson decided to take out 70% of a heat race on the start.

Nothing needs to be changed. The format is good and it's the Nationals, and it's not supposed to be easy.
Johnny is all about the Outlaws (that's his job). I will say the WoO is not the greatest show on dirt.
The Knoxville Nationals is the greatest show on Dirt and I love that the 16 locked in are an eclectic
group of racers from all over.
5 WoO regulars - Schatz, Gravel, C Macedo, Sweet, and Allen
4 Knoxville regulars - McCarl, Phillips, Reutzel, and Hickle
2 ASCoC regulars - Sunshine and PPM
2 True Outlaws - Larson and Marks
2 What team are they with today - Kofoid and Sanders
1 Retired, but still races on occasion - Pittman

inverts on half miles suck. either invert 4 or less, or dont take any transfers out of the heat. do points instead.

Is anyone listening to Johnny Gibson tonight ? There trying to give a bunch of explanations as to why the track is so greasy. I'm starting to wonder because of the availability of tires if this has something to do with the way the track is being prep'd. I've heard how the availability of tires has been a big issue for the super late models, could this be happening at the nationals ? Would not surprise me at all.

Ranking the nights as far as how the track was for the features each night.
1. Saturday - Cars were all over the track. Awesome racing in the A - Main
2. Thursday - Very good Feature - Cars running high and low.
3. Wednesday - Very good Feature - Cars running high and low.
4. Friday - Ok feature - Cars mostly around the top. Nothing on the bottom.
