Knoxville will do anything that they can to try to get a few more people to come to the limited fake nationals. Timms may draw from 15-20 friends and relatives to the races. As of today, they have sold less than 400 tickets for the Saturday night race.
|
The "limited fake nationals" have historically had racing just as good as the "somewhat less limited, 100% real nationals" ... at times better. Look up the A main last year. The show that Pittman & Gio put on was arguably the best feature of the year. Attendance has struggled for years, but it's not because the racing sucks.

Not sure I'm a huge fan of the exception knoxville has made for Timms. Unless they decide to lower the age across the board, doesn't seem fair to any other 15yr old.
|
I'm o.k. with them letting every 15 year old who have ran top 2 in 7 of 8 (winning 4) ASCS speedweek races. That'd be fair.

The magic of the Knoxville format is that so many get to participate. 48 cars will make an A Main on Wed/Thurs, Fri is a complete re-do with more cars making it into that A main. The Saturday purse is incredible with $8k going to the first non-qualifer. Even with Eldora expanding Kings Royal week with the HBO paying $100k to win, Knoxville still pays $200k more in purse money.

For anyone interested in what teams have made in winnings over the past few nationals, I've collected that data since 2018 and it's easily viewable in Google spreadsheets.

If you are a sprint driver "The Nationals" is the sprint race you want to win if you could only win one race in your lifetime. The money helps but, I think you will find it is more about the prestige of having you name as a winner of this race.
It has the best format and the best of the best show up year after year to race there. You have to fly to qualify! That is the way it should be when racing it the biggest event of the year.
Let's go Sprint Car Racing!
Knoxville - Best Track In the USA!
Eldora - 2nd Best Track in the USA!

Kyle Larson is cherry picking the limited fake nationals now? That's just pathetic and I've lost some respect. Why don't they have a rule that a driver has to have run a minimum number of 360 races this year to be eligible. Let the real 360 guys race for some half decent money once a year.

Don't take it so personal Stan...
I'm sure you'd love it if you had a free plane ticket & lodging, right?
I'm in the same boat... only been to 2 races so far this summer (one trip, 2 races) & hoping for at least one more trip. But we both see a lot on PPV, so count your blessings

I call out the judges whenever they start categorizing themselves as the "true fans". Kind of an arrogant attitude that doesn't sit well with me.

Looks like we will have a "full" field. As has been stated many times, the Nationals is based on 80 cars, and we should get that. I wasn't sure at the beginning of the season if it would be possible with all of the factors in play.
(I would actually prefer 80 cars to 110---I really don't need to see an E-main on Saturday night)

I have seen many of these true fans over years. They show up for a tear or so, know more than the people sitting around who have been going for sixty years and then another shiney object captures their attention and you never see them again.
