City of knoxville is the reason for the muffler changes cause ppl are complaining about the noise when the races are going on. You dont like the noise then move out of kville plain and simple!

I have had tinnitus for years now, hate it. Loud music, race cars and working too many years in a mainframe computer room are the culprits for me. I use the words Huh and What way too much.

There is a reason that the Speedway doesn't put you in charge of public relations.

City of Knoxville: The races are too loud and residents are complaining. Would it be possible for you to do something about the noise?

marsmancpk24: Go #### yourself and move out if you don't like it!

Tracks that are willing to listen when neighbors complain about noise issues and take steps such as mufflers and curfews to address the problem live long and prosper. Isn't that what we would prefer? wink

Another expense for all race teams, this will cost all teams some amount of money.

If a rule is to be implemented - then utilize dba at a certain distance and enforce it period.

Do not tell race teams they have to use THIS OR ANY MUFFLER to be acceptable. Conform to a dba limit and no one can complain. Example= Chico has a MUFFLER ( one or two are acceptable ) rule and a dba of 95. Its a bogus rule ( 99.9 percent of the 410 sprint cars exceed the 95 dba easy with the MUFFLERS reguired).

It sucks when tracks or organizations keep spending Teams monies.

Not against quieter race cars= against tracks or organizations that tell a team that they have to use a certain product only. Plenty of Muffler companies that can accomplish the feat as with other PRODUCTS on race cars.

Wanna save teams money. Incorporate a dba limit and enforce - no matter how they get to the limit.

Companys love being the only player.

Its like saying you can only run a FORD- nothing else allowed. (Ford is happpy now)

Its like saying you can only run a Maxim chassis- nothing else allowed. (Maxim is happy now)

etc..

do you have any of your money in a race team. To require the same muffler for every team means every team a equal. If you let teams use a muffler of thier choice they will be buying and dyno each muffler. which costs money. The track would have to buy a DB meter and have some one to run it. Knoxville gave each team that were in points a free set of mufflers. You will not have people complain that muffler XYZ is wining most of the races. I would like a track out in the country that would not have mufflers, but tracks like knoxville are now in towns.

There's no reason to cater to a few buttholes that more than likely just use it as an excuse to bitch .If I'm not mistaken the Knoxville Raceway has been around a little while, and anybody with any sense wouldn't buy a house around a racetrack if the sound of race cars bothered them.If it's too loud your too old!

Stan;

I vote we put Dirtybeer in charge of growing the sport. Perhaps as Ambassador of Goodwill and

Better yet,why don't you explain why a person moving in to a house by a racetrack that's been there since the 50's should have a reason to complain. And how will different mufflers grow the sport genius?

So does this mean that top fuel and funny cars need to watch the noise factor as well?

True, I didn't mean it as your point was invalid, but I agree that living in Knoxville you know there is going to be racing, even with the new mufflers people are still going to hear the races, they will never shut the place down because of noise, just think, what does Knoxville have without the Raceway? There is no way 3 hotels can survive in Knoxville without racing, some small food joints would fold up, there isn't much in Knoxville away from racing that could create Millions of dollars in revenue each year.

What's you wanna bet they will still complain about the noise,I would lay money on it,it's all a waste of time and money, don't move next to a dang racetrack if you don't want to hear a race car!

All the State Fairgrounds tracks in California have a 95 db limit. Don't worry, there is still plenty of noise. And the WoO run them with no problem when they race here. There is also an independent "noise cop" who monitors the noise during the entire evening, not just in Quals. They will DQ anyone that exceeds the limit, including during the feature. Also anyone who loses a muffler is automatically disqualified.

Personally, I think it is a good move and will extend the life of the tracks vs. neighbor encroachment.

The city had NOTHING to do with this new muffler. Listen to the interview on KNIA-KRLS with John McCoy..

http://www.kniakrls.com/2012/04/lets-talk-knoxville-knoxville-raceway/

I'll repeat it again, the city had NOTHING to do with the new muffler rule. To my knowledge (and I live in Knoxville), the city has NEVER asked about the noise and has no jurisdiction anyway (the Raceway is located on COUNTY property located within the city limits. The city cops have no jurisdiction on the Fairgrounds either unless asked to assist by the Marion County Sherriffs Office (that's why you only see Fairgrounds Security or Sheriffs Deputies (even during Nationals) on the grounds).

why do they have to keep changing things every year so what about the 95 db it dont matter. part of the thrill is the firing rumble of them. they dont need to fix anything unless its broke and as far as i know they aint broke yet Smile

When they stop making noise I'll go more. I don't know how old you are but if you're not wearing hearing protection you'll regret it when you get to be my age. My 60's garage band started messing up my hearing. Hooking planes up to the catapult sure didn't help, afterburners on the old F4's will do a number on a person's ears. I always wear ear plugs at the races, standing in the infield with a camera I get the full brunt of the sound.

I've got tinnitus and have to go "huh" whenever my grandkids say anything to me. I'm still into playing music albeit with a little less volume than back in the day but I'm hoping I can hang onto that for a while. I don't know why hearing damage is considered a badge of honor among some of the racers but take it from an old guy, it's pretty stupid to think that way.

I agree completely with Stan. I am 39 years old and when I had a hearing a test for my job a few years ago, the audiologist told me that I have some upper range hearing loss. I have not noticed any kind of problem, but it really was a wakeup call for me, and I now wear earplugs every time I attend a race. I wish now I had not spent 30+ years attending races without hearing protection.

I don't get the argument at all that people won't attend if the cars have mufflers or that neighbors should get a big eff you about the noise. It doesn't matter how long the race track has been there. Complaining neighbors are what get racetracks all over shut down.
