On this site David talks about what crybabies the USAC boys were, I wish that race was on tape it would be great to see.

Ray...It was Hilarious ! I was standing right there. They protested the engine size, Fuel, weight everything they could think of. They brought out a tow truck to pick up the car and weigh it. They couldn't believe some "Hick Racer" could whip them that bad without cheating. I want to say we lapped all but 2nd place, and we beat him by 3/4 lap. We kicked their butt bad and took all their protest money. Not being partial here, but my pops was one of the best at setting up a car for dry slick tracks. sure wish he was still here. Truly became my best friend. RIP Dad !

You know Brian we did have a couple of engines we traded Shavers for, but I don't remeber running one in our champ car. I think they were used in the outlaw car.We were running a 312 ci in Herb's car and I believe that night it was Gaerte, but not 100%. I can recall alot of racers laughing at my dad, for running real soft tires on hot Summer nights or even daytime shows. Herbie was just that good! But, he wasn't good at driving the truck and trailer during the daytime! We had to keep an eye on him because he would go to sleep behind the wheel. lol

I forgot about that. I believe he was. It totalled out a New Chevy Suburban. I think it was a loaner from the dealership. Not sure if he was working for Don Hattan back then or not. Herb was a funny guy. great on road trips!

Tom Bigelow in the Knepper #55. That was the only car that was competitive with Herby. It was
a old fashioned butt whipping!

Ray...No one ver remebers who finishes second. For some reason Gary Bettenhausen is coming to mind. I don't think that is right though. I know we whipped them so bad that night they protested everything they could on our car. It was funny to watch my dad keep taking their money. Those USAC guys couldn't believe that we beat em that bad without cheating. lol Back then the old man was famous for putting on some real soft tires and letting Herb feather it gently thru the corners. By the time the competitions hard tires got hot we were long gone. I watched that race from turns 3-4. what a thing of beauty!

Thats exactly as I saw it, Tom Bigelow's set up was coming in at the end and got up to second. Herby
was already counting his money by then!
