Down under in Australia most of the drivers and crews stay around after the race meeting so the spectators can check out the sprintcars and buy some tee shirts and get the drivers to sign their autographs,

Its a good relaxing time for the drivers and crews, with a few beers and a steak on the barby and a talk with the paying public on many isues after a hectic race meeting. You never know who you are talking too, several months age we picked up the biggest sponsor that we have ever had just by taking the time to talk to people in the pits after a race meeting.

I think it's always nice to see the drivers stick around, but you also have to realize that the night has not ended when they leave the track. Many times they go to wash the cars which means unloading, washing and reloading, or just trying to get down the road a certain distance to get rested for the next morning of going through the car checking every little thing. Another thing is not everyone has a good night, when you're pissed off do you like to be around strangers, or if you don't feel very good do you like people all around you. It's not that often that this happens and you don't always know the circumstances so give them a break. JMO

Since this is the first post on this subject in 2007 concerning the WoO, I'm betting they're doing a Hell of a job sticking around! Even in freezing cold at Paducah I could count on one hand the guys that were hightailing it, and all were from warm weather areas!

I'm guessing weather was a factor in packing things up at Eldora. If you've ever witnessed those rigs clamoring for position to head up the banking on the backstretch in the rain, you would understand. Donny and the King are usually two of the last ones to pack things up from my observations...

If this post isn't results, stories or something c
constructive, it isn't me!

Ask Tony Stewart what he thinks of Autographs, lol.

A couple of weeks ago the same Donny Schatz was being praised for hangin' around with the Tilton Hilton gang 'till about 4 in the morning, so please don't let one night be your only judging moment. Steve has a history of being about the last if not the last driver to leave the track and I know this having spent hundreds and hundreds of nights in the W of O pits, so please don't let a single night be your measuring tool. Some nights are better than others and some nights you've had a long day and some nights you just want to hit the motorhome in the parking lot, early for a change, pun intended. Take It Easy.....

Been to many outlaw races and never once had that problem with any of them.

MY SELF I HAVE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT. LAST YEAR AT JACKSON WAAS DIFFERENT IT STARTED TO RAIN RIGHT AFTER THE FEATURE. BUT DONNY WAS UP FRONT SHORTLY AFTER THE RACES WERE DONE AND SIGNED AUTOGRAPHS FOR THE PEOPLE THAT WRRE STILL THERE. THE YEAR BEFORE THE NEW NST DRIVERS ALL LEFT AS SOON AS THEY COULD I THOUGHT THAT WAS PRETTY CHEAP.

Your comments bring up an interesting point. It's kind of like real estate, location, location, location. Some of these same drivers I'm reading about in another post as staying late have been scrambling out of the back gate at Cedar Lake for years. Cedar is a one night show that has been running between Fargo and the next stop later in the week with one support division. Certain drivers always seem to want to get out of there but the ones with local connections stick around.

Schatz used to run 360's there, Dollansky is from nearby and Tatnell has taken up residence in the area as well. McCarl used to visit this area as a kid with his dad so those few can usually counted on to hang around until they turn the pit lights off. On the other hand, some of the drivers from other parts of the country must not feel any connection to our tracks whereas they might have a reputation for hanging around Eldora or somewhere that's closer to home for them. This year Cedar moves to a Sunday night and Princeton moves to a sparse portion of the October schedules so we'll see if things change because there aren't any other stops for a few days.

I'm no longer dragging little kids down to the haulers afterwards trying to get an autograph like I used to do when my kids were little. My son has a humorous philosophy about drivers now that he's an adult and has kids of his own. He puts it this way when he leaves without going in the pits, "Sprint Car drivers are like strippers, I just want to see them do their thing but I don't want to get to know them." What he means is that he wants to think of them as larger than life heroes and getting to know them would ruin that. Smile

Sometimes mental survival means hiding away to get your thoughts intact and sort out what went right and wrong. Look at Sammy, he's been complained about for years and he still has a few surprises left in him. I've always seen Kinser do the job as long as you don't take too much of his focus time. He'll sign for you and think about the operation at the same time. These guys and many more have survived a lot longer than Sprint Car racing usually allows. Think about it, that much attention from so many, every night for years. Other than finding a sponsor I think it has to be about the toughest thing to do on a large scale. That's why many go for charities, smaller groups, valuable impact. I might be wrong though.

Many years ago, after a Saturday Night Thunder race at IRP, Dave Despain sat on the pit wall and talked to us for hours. We heard his whole life story, at least as far as racing is concerned. I think he even missed his flight to Atlanta because of our conversation.

Whatever Dave is calling, I'll watch it. If he ever decides to run for President, he's got my vote.

Running weekly races, we always wait about loading the car. Even though no one (other than family and friends) has ever heard of us, the kids love to hang out by the cars and crews. Besides, most of the work is packing up tools, spares and other stuff. No one notices if you put away the jacks and toolboxes, just leave the car and driver out.

Just my opinion.
