It will be interesting to see what happens at Wastelands moving forward.
Will Chuck be willing to continue throwing money at it after the people voted to kill his cash cow or will he want the track to stand on its own and show a profit?
|
South Dakota is a very small part of his operation. I know there was some other states that had it on the ballot I think but not sure how they turned out. He has already stated after the election that he will stay open. I do feel that he will most likely get more business when all the other big national loan sharks move out of the state. One bad side of this deal will let other lending instutions raise their interest rates on short term loans.....

How this will affect his "cash cow". Populations SD 854K Nevada 2.8 million California 38.8 million Utah 2.9 million
Probably a pretty small number.

3, no matter what the subject matter is, if it has to do with anything in the midwest some asshat will always have to turn it around for their dislike of the former Huset's Speedway owner and management. Some of these asshats just cannot grow up.

Agree with that WoO assesment. I stopped attending WoO shows 20 years ago with the exception of the Knoxville Nationals which in reality isn't a WoO show as Knoxville makes the rules for that event. I found the WoO unfair to locals, boring starting fastest cars in front, overpriced, overinflated prima donna egos of drivers and owners and extremely rude in post race pitside conversations. Haven't been back since 1996 and do not miss a thing and they obviously do not miss or need me. I have never been big on sanctioning bodies or organizations but I will have to admit the few USAC events I attended have been excellent racing and he personalities very easy to communicate with after the races. The irony of this situation is that when the WoO started back in 1978 the USAC and WoO were the complete opposite of this current trend!!
|
I went to 3 Outlaw shows this year, Beaver Dam, Wilmot and Rockford, and two of the Indiana Sprint Week shows, Gas City and Kokomo. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment on the racing and personalities between the two. At the USAC shows I felt I was in the pits at a small out of the way track, where the drivers and fans LOVE interaction. Outlaw shows, not so much.

My point was... it is not going to have a major effect on his business as Ford stated.
You are right, it doesn't have anything to do with the NSL. Just wanted to refute what some "know it alls" like Ford are saying everytime something comes up about Badlands.

As someone who also attended the Jackson Nationals from the start it was a great show. C features, even a D once in a while. When the VFW has their troubles, it went down hill. I don't think they can justify a WoO show for 3 days without raping the fans..... Crowds are small till the finally night. Which is why you see fewer and fewer 2-3 day shows. Put the sanction fees and all the other monies the tracks have to pay to get the outlaws put that into the purse or charge less at the gate.
I am so over the hype of having an outlaw show or even attending an overpriced no passing shit track show. Just my own opinion.

Back to the NSL, one would think by not hearing anything that you would assume that it might not be dead yet but on life support. Now with no 360 races scheduled for Jackson at this time, makes me wonder if the announcement of the ASCS coming back to the Midwest that you would think Jackson would be a big part of that plus you have the MSTS 360 and for a very small and new series it's seems to do alright, and from what I heard they reached out to Tod last year but with no response Im sure BMS was the reason. Anyway on a positive note it looks like it could be a great summer of Sprint car racing in the Midwest and for my money 360's put just as good of a show on as do the 410's, a lot of good drivers around doing both.

Facing industry annihilation, payday lenders make last-ditch effort to repeal rate cap
The payday loan is no more in South Dakota.
Lenders dropped the short-term loans Wednesday as an initiated measure that capped interest rates on the industry became law.
In Sioux Falls, customers were turned away from stores with a letter or a simple statement that the businesses would no longer be able to offer short-term loans under the required 36 percent interest rate cap.
"As of today we aren't giving out any loans. We simply can't," Dollar Loan Center Founder Chuck Brennan said.
Industry officials expressed frustration at the cap while backers of the ballot measure that created it said they were glad lenders would be subject to additional policing on interest rates that have exceeded 500 percent on average, according to a 2014 Pew Charitable Trusts report.
Some lenders said they intended to weather the storm with the hope that calls on state officials would help forge a path to the law's repeal while at least two others put their properties on the market this week. The move to drop their storefronts signals an intention to exit the market.
In states that approved similar caps, the short-term loan industry has evaporated within months.
Previously, the state had no cap on interest rates for the loans. But after the measure passed last week with 76 percent support, lenders got a note from the South Dakota Division of Banking letting them know that if they continued offering the loans at interest rates higher than 36 percent, they'd face charges from the state.
Under the law, lenders that violate the interest rate cap will forfeit their earnings and be subject to a Class 1 Misdemeanor punishable by one year in jail, a fine of $2,000 or both.
But the conversation likely isn't over, industry leaders said, as they hope that appeals from their customers or potential legal challenges could be enough to reinvigorate the services in South Dakota. Lenders said they were considering weak spots in the law they could challenge and in a notice posted online, Dollar Loan Center urged customers to reach out to the South Dakota governor's office, state division of banking and sponsors to repeal the law.
Spokespeople for those groups said they got few calls and emails Wednesday asking them to reconsider.
Steve Hickey, one of the measure's sponsors, said he was pleased by the early signs that payday lenders wouldn't be able to survive the rate cap and confident that customers would find other sources for funds.
"These lenders weren't meeting a need, they were making things far worse for the needy," Hickey said in a statement. "The sky doesn't fall for the poor in any of the 15 states that drove the loan sharks out."
Brennan, who has done business though Dollar Loan Center in South Dakota for 15 years and has 10 locations in the state, said the group would continue processing loans that were taken out prior to Wednesday. But future lending wouldn't be possible if the 36 percent cap remains in place.
"It's not like all of a sudden we're going to charge a whole lot less. The industry doesn't work that way," he said. "The way it's worded, there's absolutely no way the industry can survive it."
Jamie Fulmer, senior vice president of public affairs at Advance America, Cash Advance Centers, Inc. said that group also ceased offering short-term loans at its South Dakota stores Wednesday as it explores other options.

I don't understand the "we simply can't" position, 36% is a pretty good margin in most industries is it the potential risk of non-payment?

If their customers want to repeal the law they should have voted against it. I don't see to many politicians going against 76% of the voters. That would be political suicide.

You have to remember this is in South Dakota. A republican strong hold. Where the Ruling Republcans have changed and altered the laws initated by the voters including the last years minimum wages bill that was passed overwhelming by the people. South Dakota has been honored with being in the top 3 most corrupt state in the USA.... We also passed an anti-corruption bill that will be surely dilluted by the legislature this winter.... limiting lobbying money and campaign donations. So anything is possible in SD....

A couple things come to mind....the Constitution....."We the People........." And Lincoln's Gettysburg address......"that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth". The people's government in our country has not yet perished, but it sure is getting harder to recognize!

Hard to believe 410s aren't prospering in midwest with Outlaw rules, big wickerbills, $65,000 qualifying engines, etc.
They don't even know how to spell sprint car

Republicans out number the Democrats by 2 to 1 margin in South Dakota. The will of the people through an Inititated measure helped to raise the sales tax a 1/2 a percent to help raise teachers salary in the state. The Republican elite's went nuts and still lost to the will of the voters. We've had our fair share of people dieing mysteriously in this state due to its many scandals in the last couple of years.......... so its not a Clinton thing....... LOL
