In the early 80's Knoxville wasn't anything like it is today.
In the early 80's the Jackson Nationals and the Knoxville Nationals were much closer to being on a level playing field.
All of Chucks money won't make a race at Huset's into the prestigous race that every driver wants to win that the Knoxville Nationals is.
|
I doubt he is planning on going head to head with the Knoxville Nationals. Head to head vs. Knoxville weekly is a whole different story. He already has about 12 410's who would support him. If he contracts with McCarl and 1-2 other drivers, and then offers 5k to win and 1k to start, he is going to draw cars. People have a good points which are, Jackson and Knoxville both supported lots of 410 drivers in the 80's and Sioux Falls today is substantially larger than 1985. Between Sioux Falls and Grand Forks/Jackson, they could easily be drawing 25 410's a week.

The new management may very well make the facility better but we shall see if the racing is any better. Paying (buying) drivers won't last either. Long live Knoxville and all they have done for sprint racing over the years. The coolest thing about the NSL is they don't compete with Knoxville, they work with them not to split the 410's hurting both of them in the long run. If I here "badlands speedway one more time, I'm gonna vomit!"

Agreed. Its called Husets out of respect and tradition of who founded it. His money his rules though. I'll continue to use the Husets name. Also the fact that he acts like he "loves" sprint car racing but hates Knoxville is insulting. What a D-Bag with way to much confidence and so little knowledge. So he may bring T-Mac and a couple other up on Saturday (MAYBE) but then no one races on Sunday. Ya its a business but I am sure T-Mac would rather run for big money on both Saturday and Sunday instead of just Saturday. Terrys just keeping all options open at this time in that article. I hope this plan falls flat on its face yet I do not want to see this track close. Go back to Sundays and race door bangers on Saturday if you want 2 races a week.

A small part of me feels like this is a roundabout way of killing the track to turn it purely into a entertainment complex.

Please name those 12 and the other 13 cars you expect to show up. They have a hard time getting 15 410's right now with a handful of guys that will go to Knoxville if they have to chose.
They MIGHT be able to pull 20 cars but they won't all be 410's, 5-10 on any night would be 360's filling the field.
5k to win at Huset's still won't pull any cars from Knoxville until after the Nationals are done. There is a reason that WoO guys drop in on a Knoxville weekly show anytime they can and it isn't for $3k to win. It's to get laps for that $150k to win race in August.
The number of 410's that are racing now is substantially less than it was in the 80's. This is not going to be 1980 Jackson vs 1980 Knoxville. Its 2016 Huset's vs 2016 Knoxville. The size of Sioux Falls doesn't matter for drawing cars.
Huset's could easily draw 25 cars/Sunday night right now if a real race promoter ran the place. Sadly I'm not convinced that is what they're getting. He may be a promoter but its looking more and more like he knows nothing about racing.

I never heard him say anything about a point fund and whats the purse going to be? the one thing he does have is a populated area and Souix Falls is the 47th fastest growing city in the country. Im like everyone else though...dont go head to head with Knoxville. And a non wing race is a reach unless he brings in USAC . JMO

I understand that. I haven't heard about a purse either. I'm simply asking, what would it take? I'm not a supporter of this move at all, I'm just trying to see the positives. This is completely hypothetical but what if he payed enough to keep guys like Dusty Zomer, and Clint Garner at home? That would be two additional cars (good cars) that currently aren't racing there on a weekly basis. We know T-Mac is on board. Money talks, and speaks volumes to race teams. All I'm saying is it could work, and be sustainable, and maybe even thrive, regardless of Knoxville. We all know Knoxville will live on forever but as far as fans in the seats Husets on a Saturday, you may lose a handful but likely will also gain a handful. Also, JMO. I wish this wasn't a discussion and this dude was uping the purse for the Sunday show.

Brennan's 1st event as owner is a farewell to Huset's concert in late August.

There is no Badlands Speedway, its Husets Speedway. Only a person with no racing knowledge or any sense of history would attempt to change that. Going against Knoxville, just plain STUPID. Speaks volumes about his selfish arrogance. His comment about vomiting at hearing about Knoxville is quite possibly the most ridiculous thing I have read in a long damn time.
He made his fortune through pay day loan predatory lending, an entirely sleezy industry. Loan sharking people out of their money one pay check at a time. Now that makes me want to vomit Chuck.
Cheers!

Badlands Speedway? Sounds like bad plans speedway. That is what the place should be called by all.

And just exactly how does splitting the field of cars and fans benefit racing overall?
How does taking away one night of racing benefit the racers who would miss an opportunity to make money by losing a night of racing?

The idea of having sunday as a rain date is rediculous. If it were to rain on sat and it was clear on sunday then that means if the race would have been scheduled for sunday to begin with then there would be no need for a rain date. And if it did rain Sunday then what? All he is doing is tying up people for two days while he sells consessions.
This guy isn't trying to help racing. He is trying to boost his own ego by trying to compete with knoxville. He is not offering the racers a better deal. He is taking away their opportunity to race at both places.
This guy needs to stop stroking himself in front of the mirror.
to indy and beyond!!

How is this splitting the field? With a couple of exceptions Knoxville guys never come to husets...everyone is acting like Knoxville sends 20 cars up here weekly. All anyone can do is wait and see what happens at this point.

I think the Knoxville vs. Huset's argument for cars is overrated. The untapped resource for 410's for Sioux Falls is the North Dakota cars on Saturday night. I think it's possible for both Knoxville and Huset's to have sizable fields of 410's on the same night.
I thought this was a crazy deal when I first heard of it. But it's making a little more sense to me now.
It seemed like a terrible business decision to me. But I'm hearing that Brennan sees this as his hobby, so he's not expecting to make a profit.
I don't know if it will succeed or fail. But I do know that he hates failure, and I can see him pouring money into this deal for a long time to make it work.

There is a reason Tod Quiring, Knoxville, and other tracks are working together and not against each other...it is in the best interest of the sport overall and ALL parties involved. If this new track owner has this attitude and could care less about going up against another track...you can be assured they do NOT have the best interest of the overall sport, teams, or fans in mind with what they are doing
Have always been a fan of Terry McCarl and all he has done for the sport as a driver, owner, and promoter, have always considered him one of the ambassadors of the sport. Will be extremely disappointed if he has sold his services to the highest bidder to the detriment of the sport.

6 cars raced at Huset's this past Sunday night that also raced at Knoxville on Saturday night, 5 of those 6 were in the top 10.
TMAC who'm everyone thinks is going to race at Huset's on Saturday night instead of Knoxville wasn't even at Huset's Sunday night and nieither was Lynton Jeffery who is quite often at Huset's, that's 8 cars which are of pretty good quality vs the other 17 cars which were at Huset's.
Huset's may get a half decent (maybe 20) car count on Sat night, but there won't be a whole lot for quality. I suppose the Sioux Falls locals will like it if all of the better funded teams stay at Knoxville.

I'm certain some of those cars would choose Huset's. But definitely not all of them. It's difficult to speculate until the purse/points fund is announced. And I'm sure sponsors' desires on where they want the car to race at will play a factor.
Austin McCarl is only racing this year because of his sponsor in Sioux Falls, The Bargain Barn. If they have the same deal next year, I'm sure he would be required to race Huset's. That could affect Terry's decision on where to race.
I heard from a pretty good source that Brennan plans to pay a sizable amount to the points champion...more than Knoxville. But I can't verify that. If that's true, it could bring a few more top cars. The downside for those racing for Huset's points would mean little or no track time at Knoxville in preparation for the Nationals.
I guess most will remain undecided until the purse/points fund is announced.

As for the point fund and going up against Knoxvilles point fund for the "top tier" cars/drivers, he'd also be going up against the NSL's point fund since there are NSL races on Sat night as well.
Time will tell but I don't see Knoxville or the NSL losing many cars to Huset's no matter how much money Chucky throws at the deal.
It'd be much easier to work with other tracks instead of against them but its becoming obvious that Chuck has more money than brains and more ego than money.

I'd like to see what Brennan's point fund will be (if he has one). I know that Knoxville & NSL aren't concerned what this guy does & agree that they will not lose hardly any cars.
I also don't think that a bunch of North Dakota cars would come to race @ Huset's as well on Saturdays. NOSA this season has 8 Saturday's/Sunday's of racing at other tracks across North Dakota & Minnesota. That's usually the norm up there (7 - 10 per year).
Like you said, it a lot easier working with other Speedway's or Sanctioning Bodies than think that money & ego is going to bring in cars / fans. And he's already off to a bad start by using the words "Knoxville" & "vomit" in the same sentence.
