I know there are a few, and by few I mean 2 that I know of, that are spending that kind of money on 305. The more reasonable price I have been hearing for Knoxville is $8-10K. Which, sounds like a lot for what the purse is, but it is a 1/2 mile, you have to buy some decent parts to make them last at that track. I am not trying to argue with anyone, just don't want people to assume that all Knoxville cars are spending that on thier stuff. There are a lot more motors out there that were less than $10K than there are more than $10K...

I will concede to you that your last statement is probably true.

i can tell you from experience that if you run with racesaver and belong to crsa 305 sprints as i do buy no means do you need to spend more than 8500.00 dollars on a motor to be very competive in fact i have a little over 6300.00 dollars in mine and timed trialed 2nd fast at orange county only 1 onehundreth of fast time. i can tell ya there is nothing better than the racesaver series cause it in fact keeps the cost down for the average working man

I have been looking closely at the Racesaver numbers and I am pretty close to going that route. It is definitely a less expensive option.

URSS run URSS rules if you run the small wing. If you run the big wing, but have flat tops, and the proper valve lift and springs etc. you are at 1550lbs... If your motor is like a Midwest 305 you would be at 1600lbs.
Hope this helps.

Quite a lot of chatter for a topic on Briggs and Stratton style sprint motors.

Maybe it is because all of the bigger classes have out priced themselves. I would rather race a slow car then no car at all! Look at the number of cars that are running 305 across the country. There are currently more Briggs & Stratton motored cars then there are huge 410's. Maybe there is something to that!

So where do we go when 305's cost more money? 283's?

You must either get your pit passes free or you don't buy many. I can spend a $100 bill a night easily on pit passes.
|
I only buy 2, my father and I. I burn $40 in fuel in the car and pit passes run me $60.

That is an excellent question. Maybe in ten years we will all have 4 cylinders in them and in 20 maybe really have Briggs OHV engines. I feel the same way, but it is no longer cost effective to do the ASCS 360 thing. Although they have across the board rules they have out priced themselves as well. Maybe we need to sit down with the ASCS and ask them "What Happened"? --------I do think that it is a funny thing that you can build a low budget 410 to run on small local tracks with a group like MOWA for less than you can run an ASCS 360 for. Thankfully there are still some clubs like The Sprint Invaders that are not mandating $40,000 engines to race with them. Thanks to clubs like them, some of us can still move up a little when we are ready to do so. Once they go away I believe that car counts will drop drastically as a whole as most people can not afford a high dollar program.

Intelligent and well thought out post. I dont mean to demean people that are liking 305's. I just feel the smaller motors are getting away from the motor size I feel a sprint car should have. Good luck to your team this season.

We run 305/s because the other motor sizes priced themselves out for the income and economy of the area. This can happen with any size of motor. We brought 305.s in under Racesaver type rules. We are not exactly Racesaver but we have a group of racers that tech and recheck and keep the rules followed.
That being said I wish they were 350. or bigger with the same basic rules, but they are not. The fact that you keep compression, valve lift, rotating weight, and basically rpm down is what makes it work. ASCS did none of that. Hindsight is 20/20. The head and gasket were good ideas until people figured out how to rev the crap out of them with lighter weight components, ie titianium valves, light cranks, rods and pistons etc.
So you can bitch and blame ASCS or WOO or whomever you would like. If you go to 283. or 265 cubic inch it can get out of control if someone in the know does not control the things that matter. The things that drive up the cost of building it, and how long it will last between freshen ups. our 305.s will run all year without a freshen up as lons as nothing stupid happens. This makes it where the area can afford to race.. Like I said I wish they were 360.s with the same rules , but they are not and the 305 is here.
So , if you are not scared -- come on over to LC and race with us in march.

Thank you for the well wishes. I could not agree with you more, there is nothing as exciting as the Fire Breathing 410's. I really hope that everyone gets on the same page. I have high hopes that The MOWA continues to grow and put on good shows. It would be nice to have an option down the road. We will run with The Invaders, and hopefully one day with The MOWA, if they are still around. Of course at the rate that we are progressing with our 305 program it may 2028 before we get to try!

Well, I know for a fact that we would LOVE to come out and race with you. My folks have land in Demming where they stay every winter and we have thought about heading out there. The biggest problem is the gas to get there from Chicago.
So I am sure that it is a long way from fear for anyone that would come and run your show from this area. And I know that if SNM Speedway had a pay out that was higher in the way of tow money, that many more people would come. And I understand why you don't. It is the same reason that most of us can not make the pull. The economy sucks.
As for engine size, you are completely right. A heavily restricted 350 would be cheaper in the long run. But it is what it is. I wonder what they spend on their 358's in PA? I bet it is high, but maybe not.
To close this post I will say, if SNM Speedway wants to front the tow money we would come run!

We appreciate that. I really think the high gas and diesel prices hurt racing more than almost anything else as far as traveling to races. there is just no way for any track to offset those high cost to get out of towners to come. I guess as racers we all have to pretty much rely on the good ol fuel sponsors to keep everyone moving around.
Thank God for summer time and local racing.

That statement made perfect sense 25 years ago. If you think that people are not making the pull to NM to race because they are not racers, then you need to look around. I know of at least 10 cars that would go to NM to race tomorrow if the funds were different.
If you would like to front the tow money we would go. But I promise you that as long as I am not working, which has been the case since October 2011, I will not be able to "Make it happen"! So sorry, I disagree with this post.

if you think 305 are a briggs and stratton, set your ass down in one and tell us how. count 1001 and that is difference between a 305 and a 360 per lap.

Is this aimed at me???? If so you obviously missed my responses, or didn't understand them. I don't need to make an attempt at being around them, I own one (305), therefore I spend every weekend around them. I think that maybe you are just mistaken.

Even if it was a Briggs and Stratton it would be fun if competitive and didn't take breaking the bank to run or mortgaging the house.
We have a good system of teching and a great field or lawn mowers, I mean cars... Come race and have some fun..
