Stanbrough takes Illinois Sprint Week opener at PVCS

By ROB LEE

DANVILLE, Ill. (June 9) – The rollercoaster ride ended up on a high for Jon Stanbrough Wednesday evening at Pierce’s Vermilion County Speedway.

The Brownsburg, Ind. veteran passed Chris Windom on Lap 24 and won the 30-lap Monster Midwest Sprint Car feature, the opener in the five-race Illinois Sprint Week. Stanbrough collected $2,000 for the victory and kept his PVCS favorable streak alive.

“Any of these guys that started up front could be standing right here,” Stanbrough said in Toyota of Danville Victory Lane. “We were lucky we caught the lapped traffic right and that worked out for us.”

It was far from an easy drive. Stanbrough started outside Row One, but fell back a few spots in the early stages running as low as fifth place.

“I made an adjustment to the shocks from inside the car. Then the track came to me. I was able to get up high, but I’m sure Chris was right behind me.”

The entire 30-lap distance was run without a caution.

Windom got caught behind slower traffic as both top runners moved to the bottom of the quarter-mile oval late in the race. The Canton, Ill. pilot, fresh off his first career USAC win in Pennsylvania Friday, kept Stanbrough in his sights. He finished ahead of a hard-charging Casey Shuman, who started 10th. Critter Malone and Missouri driver Hunter Schuerenberg came next.

Schuerenberg started on the pole and paced the first 14 laps before Windom moved by at the halfway point. After fading a bit, Schuerenberg made a late race rush back to crack the Top 5.

Windom, Schuerenberg and Stanbrough won the heats. Chad Branson won the consolation. The feature field was set by the top 16 in passing points from the heat races and the top 4 from the consolation.

There were 26 MMSCS racers on hand. The series moved to LaSalle Speedway Thursday. Races also are scheduled for Tri-City Speedway, Pontoon Beach; Lincoln Speedway and Shepp’s Speedway, Alexander the next consecutive nights.

Bobby Pierce won the UMP Pro Late Model 20-lap feature after taking the lead from Randy Shuman on Lap 4. Ed Lahey took the UMP Sportsman finale while Jerrad Krick was tops in UMP Street Stocks.

Up next at PVCS is the annual stop for the UMP Summernationals and Illini FS Employees Night Monday June 21. The winner of the Super Late Model feature will take $5,000. The Illini FS UMP Modifieds, UMP Sportsman and UMP Street Stocks also will be in action.
