Yes it was to say the least.

The mystique is not dead at that speedway, it has just been dormant for some time. The 'pull' to save it is what brought so many in last night.

I'm telling anybody, if that speedway goes, this state becomes just another state with a few dirt tracks. It is a rarity and there is a wave of sweeping old girls like her out. The surviving fairgrounds tracks will be few.

Saving the speedway might be a lost cause, but losing it the way it's going is terribly injust. Defeat before the final total outcome is ONLY a state of mind. Just like many were beaten by Kinser before they even got out of the trailer.

IT BRINGS TO MIND THAT THERE ARE MANY WAYS INTO BECOMING COMMUNIST, AND THE WAY WE'RE LOSING THIS TRACK IS STARTING TO SMELL LIKE WE'RE GOING TO FIND THE AMERICAN WAY TO GET THERE. THIS TIME WE'RE THE COWBOYS FIGHTING THE BARB WIRE.

Yes, I am 'in check'. not an emotional outburst but rather an observation. The "haves" are going to give us what they want, and force the OkC racing community and the surrounding and mostly unknowing community to pay for it. Few in that community want that track gone, if they really knew what they had. It's not just about racing, or living in the past. MANY of us were raised living it, EVEN IF SOME OF US COULDN'T BE THERE.

That is a rare shrine OkC has.

Well, the "haves" get richer, and we ......................................................well, we're still being told we're in a democracy, so that means there is still a chance right?

Was really glad to see lots of folks show up and voice their opinion , shows that they still care about the track in OKC.

Just hope some good things happen from this start of last night. Only time will tell.

If they close down the OKC fairgrounds race track it will kill racing in OKC. Look what happened here in Tulsa, from having the highest average attendance in the nation to nothing.

It will hurt racing more than just in OKC , it will hurt racing in a broad area of the state, like where will the ASCS run their Regional and National Sprint Shows some 4 to 5 Sooner Region shows which is about nearly half of their schedule run at SFS alone and those tracks that run on Sat. nights that have guys from OKC run at their place, Lawton,Brill,Ada, Ardmore ,Elk City, Enid , sponsors that help because of the Fairgrounds track and without them helping then guys cannot get out and travel to other tracks to race and help their car count , so it will effect more than just OKC by itself.

Brian, Watching those old videos of the Fairgrounds on the other thread, makes it even more difficult to know that it may end.

I know it's been quiet here in OK, lots and lots of speculation about the fairgrounds for the most part. It certainly has been an interesting turn of events.

It's almost like it has been a week of doom and gloom. Things will shake out, but we will never shake the memories. Thats one thing we will keep and we can pass along.....

DGM7620, Been asked on the other board to try and get another get together started, maybe early Feb.or sometime in that month.

You have any ideas, I would think Round Up side room would be to small for it now, we were pretty much at capacity last time, Cattlemen's was brought up , not sure what the cost would be, like to try and keep it Free if possible, not sure if that is possible though, might try and do some checking around.

Any ideas from anyone , post them.

Was thinking at the next get together and with all that has transpired recently, that we have a Fairgrounds/State Fair Speedway tribute and hears some stories and tales of 55 yrs. of history of the place.

I think that would be fitting. What do you all think?

Mick Cornetts living room would be a good place. Tim O'Tooles as well. Be a great way for everybody to get closer.

Tim, the top car was driven by Doug Johson and owned by the same family that owned your father's number 88 car.

Anybody recognize the trophy girl from 1973? I think Emmett and Don Engel shook her hand when they got their trophies.

This is from opening night at the new track in Tulsa, 1974. Look at the attendance and the purse. That's when racing was better in Oklahoma. This is from Tulsa Speedway News.

My racing shirt from the 1975 season with Norman. We did not get best dressed crew at Tulsa. I think we were home towned.
