David, Those Pit Passes are pretty dam cool , sure wish they still had em today.

Guess you all came pretty close last Sat. at Ada , I heard it was about a foot or so from winning it?

JD,

They reviewed the tape 4 or 5 times and DJ said it was about a foot, Andy drove a good steady race, I'm sure you heard that the track was horrible, it was about the 3rd roughest track that I've raced at, it bent up alot of parts on DJ's car RF spindle, tie-rod, jacobs ladder, rear torsion heims, torsion bars I'm sure are used up along with the shocks.

The roughest track I've raced at was in '84 at OKC during an NCRA race in OCT. it had rained for days and that old 1/2 mile had huge ruts, I've posted a story about that race in this thread already. 2nd roughest race was in the mid 90's at an NCRA race in Grand Forks ND, it was a fairgrounds track, little bull ring 1/4 mile we were battling GW for the point lead and it had rained for days prior to the race, Shorty did very poor in the heat and started 20th in the A-FEA, GW, Terry Grey, Lasoki and a couple of other heavy hitter's were on the front and it was a 40 lap race, huge ruts all over in the corners, I think 4 or 5 guys flipped in the heats, anyway Shorty had decided to just run a few laps and pull out, well that didn't happen and he ran all 40 laps and finished 2nd to GW it is 1 of the best races I've seen Shorty run.

I don't really care for rough tracks but it is the same for every body so I didn't think it was a problem at ADA but I'm sure Mike Goodman & Robert would argue that with me they both took very hard violent flips.

Bkcr,

Those USAC guys were hard on us in '85 really picked us apart, they didn't like NCRA guys and damn sure didn't like anybody that was a WOO racer back then. I despised them more then I ever did anybody we raced with around here if Bob or Stone had need anything while we were at those USAC/NCRA events I would have busted my ass for them to get it. The first year USAC came down to race I sit at a couple of dinner's with Hill and some of the USAC officals and driver's and it was all I could do to keep my mouth shut the only one of them that I got along with was JP he at least didn't talk to you like you were dirt, Bettenhausen I wouldn't give you a dime for and he all but called me out at a dinner in that old APPLEWOODS resteraunt, told us how bad they were going to stomp our ass, hah I guess Herb didn't here about that!!!!! That was 1 event I did really get worked up about, Knoxville never had me that strumbed up. In '86 it was kind of funny they didn't give us much crap Shorty pretty well straightened Vogler out on the front stretch and then backed it up on the track, I think USAC was more worried about getting out of here with there hides then they were about us. I know this in '86 they came here after winning the previous 2 years and thought they could just throw there weight around well when they left they realized they couldn't do that no more in OKC or with NCRA, by that time we had way to many shoes around here that we could have went to there turf and kicked there ass!!!!!!!!!!!1

David, I heard it was close and heard that from others as well that is was a really rough track and your right what all else did you use up with shocks , bars, etc.when you race on a really rough track.

Maybe a good thing we did'nt make it, but Creek was pretty bumpy as well.

I seen some folks post not real happy with Ada , but I believe they were some of the flip victims and I guess you can't blame them, but you just move on.

I remember Echo Ranch Raceway in Ada in 1989 ran a 100" Modified there and it was so rough we warped several radius rods and the tie rod, heck we probably would have done the same to spindles and arms as well but back then all I had was steel spindles and arms , so probably a good thing or they would have been bent as well, but those alum. radius rods sure did warp in that 20 lap A main.Felt like I needed to go over every bolt and nut on the car after that night.

David was the riot when Rich Vogler flipped Jon Johnson as bad as I heard? Did they really have to cut a hole in the chain link fence for him to get out?

The next time that you are in Tulsa call me, I have something that I think that you would like.

Bkcr,

He climbed over the pit fence to get out. The real action was the mob headed across the infield from turn 2 headed by JJ, Shorty had already run into him on the front stretch and went up to Vogler's car yelling at him WHAT THE F--K WERE YOU DOING, YOU JUST TOOK HIM OUT!!!!!!!! Shorty said Vogler never looked at him and just kept staring straight ahead, the offical's and police slowed the mob down and there was never any real blows at that moment, I've heard that Vogler was pretty tough but I know JJ is tough and at that moment I don't think he wanted any part of JJ. Shorty was right behind them on the start and says there's no doubt Vogler took him out wasn't even close and that's the way it looked from the pits also. Shorty really was pissed and that was enough extra drive to make him win that race, it wasn't the idea of money then it was us against them at that point!!!!!!

i was taking pictures in turn 3 when that happened. we went over to the wreck and the thing i remember most about the car is that one frame rail was about 2 feet higher at the engine than it should have been....Chuck Sterling said "come on!" and motioned toward Johnson and we became part of that mob. i will never forget when we walked out from behind the stage the whole crowd went nuts and you could hear people yelling for Jon to kill him and other things. i have a picture of Jon with his finger in Voglers face.....that was truly unforgettable

I heard the brakes went out, but they were fast before that happened.

bushwacker, It was the brakes , inboard lower brake line developed a leak and no brakes meant no turning the car and we were done with running up front, but we were pretty good before that happened , enjoyed the heck out 81 , first time to ever run a car at the place and really like running at the place as much as watching NCRA's and All Stars and stuff over the years.

I really enjoyed meeting Bushwacker, Welder and hope we can meet up again with more time to talk.

I made time to watch the old cars run and they were really impressive, especially the Supers of my era.It ws just like I was 12-15 years old again and those guys were out there running at 81 in the late 70's.

One car stuck out to me was the #08 Nance 100" car from the late 80's , it was all original or what I could see and a girl was shoein it, I mean Nance rear and front arms and birdcages and front end , really thought that car was cool because a friend in OKC Charley Ford had one just like it and nearly all the same components on it.

The 15 car owned by Welder is very nice as well and see lots of time spent on it to make it as immaculate as it was.

Saturday night was just about the most fun I have had all year at a race. We ran good but DNF'd with the brake deal but still enjoyed the atmosphere of that race and with all the Vintage cars some 50 + if I was told correctly and 36 2 Bar. and some 305's , made for a great night and would do it again in a heartbeat. "Its a Saturday night and ain't got no money" so I stayed home and my wife said I was pouty all night.

I did work on the site all night. Getting the Kansas Supermodifieds 60's/70's in alphabetical order. I forgot how much work it was to put the site together.

TOO BAD THE BRAKE DEAL. YOU WERE FAST , AND WOULD HAVE FINISHED UP FRONT. AS YOU MENTIONED WATCHIN THE NCRA ECT, I WORKED ON THE 12N THAT LARRY DEWELL DROVE, IT WAS A COIL OVER CAR, A LITTLE UNIQUE AND WAS GOOD ON DRY SLICK SURFACES. THE NANCE CAR YOU MENTIONED IS A 1984 OR THERE ABOUTS, , THE OWNERS DAUGHTER WAS IN THE SEAT. A REAL GOOD PROGRAM SAT, I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE SPEED AND E/T YOUR 360'S .BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME WITH YOUR RACER.

bushwacker,Thats Racing ya take the good with the not so good, We tried to make the car where it was good both on the top and bottom,we felt traffic would play into it towards the end of the race and felt with what we threw at the car , it would be good on top and bottom and it was going ok until no brakes became an issue.

I remember that coil over car of Dewell , was purple and yellow I believe , also ran the #112?.

I sure wanted to talk to the guy with that 100" Nance #08 , it sure got my attention.

I will tell you this the 99 Super Dale Looper car was really a great looking car as well.

I did not realize how big KAR organization is. Quite impressive. Hope one day to restore that Stealth of mine but will have to let it age some more before that happens and me age as well. But it is a non downtube car and they don't make them anymore I don't believe.

sprint. the 112 you mentioned if it was the old coil over, is the same car only 12n., , after a few mods for the 1980 season. that 12 n was sold to a guy in oklahoma city, lost track of after that. it was sort of a experamental that nance built , something he was always doing. the vintage cars are a blast to watch and eye-ball the restorations ect.

Bushwacker,,,,,,the 112 you are talking about it sounds like you may know things about that car. We got a car that we been trying to ID. It could be this car. Is there anything else about that car you remember that could help use say that it is it.Or do you remember anything about that car that could help use Id it. It has 112 on it but it is really faded badly But the car is in pretty good shape other wise....it is fixable. If there is anything you can remember about it,, sure would like to know so i can past the info along to the guy that has it.The car was picked up in the Ok City to Enid area.

Maybe you remember the color of the frame rails or maybe the colors in the cockpit or something that could help use out.

We have pretty much checked out all the 112 cars that ran back then but we cant say it is not this car yet. The number looks right and the style of Nance it is is right. If you can think of anything.

Win as if you are use to it.And lose as if you enjoyed
it for a change. Its hard to get to the top and alot
harder to stay there.

hey bandanna, the 112 assembled in 1980 body was painted gold like the 12n, frame rails ect would probable had black paint. the roll cage would be the style that nance started in 1980, same as on the sprinter house car's that sammy drove. if ya post a pic it might help ya get some help from some other gear heads!!!

David , Been reading on the Hoseheads site that your company has the Sprint Car world on edge with you all getting the WoO deal for the future. Carter/Maxwell was even mentioned in the thread about pics of OKC cars running Goodyears.

Will you all approach folks in this area , Speedways that run Sprint Cars , OCRS (heard their deal with Amer. Racer is up at the end of this year) ,Etc. to get them to go to Goodyear.

I like the Spec. tire rule , seems to be a good deal to me , just wish they only had one Spec. tire and not several and all the tracks and sanctioning bodies would get all on the same tire and not have to purchase several different brands to run with different sanctions and tracks.

Sure would save owners like me some loot.

interesting mel beitler's name surfaced with our latest posts. seems like i remember mel and family moved to the okla. city area in the early 80's. someone down there might know for sure, and tracking the 100 in. car from 1980 might be possible.

Yes my dad had the nance 112 built in 1980 for my brother he raced it for about 1 year and then Larry Dewell drove it.Won the 82 okc ncra finished up the 82 season and moved from SW kansa to norman okla .In 83 Darrell Jennings drove the car some. Then it was sold to Ronnie York in norman ok.After that it stayed local I think but that was a long time ago.If somebody needs pics of either The 112 jelly car,12N nance,or the 112 1980 nance car i have a bunch of pics and a lot of stories.Alan Beutler
