didnt a female from okc drive it???

bsman 63,

Yes it was driven by my Aunt, Buddie Faye Ebey as the #44, and some at Tulsa by Steve Foster. Jake Ebey bought the car for Buddie Faye to drive but we can't remember who Jake bought the car from any clues?

Thanks, Allen

With that okie sprint tail could be several cars. The one that comes to mind is the 7-11 driven by Jerry Everhart from Wichita at Tulsa and Muskogee in the late 60's and maybe very early 70's. Both of the Junior Taft cars were from that style. But they ran into the middle 70's if I remember right.

Does anyone know the true story behind the "Okie Tail Tank" (cover) ? Was it a crash that tore up the back end of the fiberglass tail tank cover and someone had the idea to just cut it off and put a end cap on it, or was it done by design?

Whoever came up with the design, it made for some good looking cars. I'm just curious as to who started the trend.

it looks like a car that Bob and Tony Guthrie drove with the number 89 or 110 on it but there were so many of those through the 70s it could be anybody...also Ron Reese drove one like that numbered 48 i believe

uncle a,

Just ate lunch over at the Legends Luncheon in Tulsa, and sat with Marvin West of Broken Aarow Fiberglass fame, Marvin told me he and Benny Taylor came up with the design and he built the first one for Benny's #1300 Super Modified. He told me he built around a 100 of these bodys and if you remember they were very popular during this time, he still has the mold and other molds that he had but didn't act to interested in building any soon as he is on a 3yr house building project at Lake Keystone. He also told me somebody here in OKC made a mold of that body and built them here in town but he doesn't remember who it was. I loved those cars Benny built, Space Frame Springer's with swinging shackles on the rear they were awesome fast and looked good, this basic design I believe would still be fast today, can you imagine shorting that design up to 86/87 inch WB and running a spring on the front with that body design, wonder what guys would do if somebody built that and started winning races around here, might be like Samual at the chili bowl this year!!!

Hey Bkcr,is there any way i could get a copy of that tape from 1969 Tulsa. I was at 24 of them races that year with my Dad. Jack Belk. I was a big fan of Leeps. If i could get a copy of it we have a place here in Joplin that has done dozens of tapes for alot of use here. They can go from whatever tape to whatever tape combo. I could have extra copys made and send some back to you if you would like just tell me how many you need.

Also i got a tape that Bud Hatch put together from the Tulsa area from around 1965 66 67 , it has some good pics in it of the pits down there of the cars and stuff. I would send you a copy of it in trade and more copys of what you send me if you need. You can email me [email protected] for info.

Tim

Tim I made an extra tape and would be happy to send it to you and would like any old racing . i am in Branson Mo with my wife and in-lawas and will not be home until this weekend, send me your address and I will be happy to mail you the tape. You can send it to my e-mail, [email protected]

To All,

Went to Tulsa today for the Dirt Legends Luncheon with Shorty, it was a great turn out I'm guessing about 60/70 people. Visited with Marvin West for quite awhile about the old body's he used to make at Broken Arrow Fiberglass. A few that attended Jay Davis, Big Jack Wickett, Darrell Brazeal, Court Grandstaff, Ray Crawford, Emmitt Hahn, Ron Fowler, Steve Foster, Bob Hurley, Benny Taylor, Jerry Stone, Darrell Tuttle, Denny Moore, Ray Cates, Hershal Goodnight, Dave Grubb, Harold Leep Sr and a great cast of others!!! It was a fun time lots of old history in that room. I wish we could get some of those guys on a computor to tell there stories on this thread it would be a great addition.

Man I had not seen Darrell Tuttle and Ron Fowler since probably in the late 70's or very early '80's man the still look great!! Walked right by Bob Hurley shook hands with Steve and Harold turned around and said oh shit that's Bob Hurley talked with Bob for a bit he looks pretty good still also. I did a short stint working for Bob on his #04 Walker Super Modified he was a piece of work, I think back now when I first remember him racing that #40 Modified at OKC, Squrrially Bob Hurley they used to call him, he wore these goofy looking pants to drive in of course that was back in the hippy days. I've posted a couple of stories about Bob in this thread I hope you guys/gals will find and read them.

To All,

In May of '85 we were really cruising we had the Gambler deal going in full swing and had the Rich car for back-up our motor deal was really strong we had 3 really good BB/SS motors, and 2 conventional 350 pkgs, lots of parts we were in great shape, only thing we were running full time was NCRA, otherwise we were hit and miss at OKC, Tulsa, Whicita, we were 2nd in points only about a 100/125 pts behind Bullett Bob. We would only run 8 season pt races at OKC and still finish 4th in points. Anyway disaster struck on about May 13 The Old Man had his first stroke of many to come it was about a week before a Tulsa NCRA race. We weren't for sure what we were going to do but Pat said go ahead and race this weekend and we'll see how I'm doing. it was a 2 day show, heats and qualifer's on friday and features on Saturday. On friday night we ran 2nd or 3rd in the heat and started 2nd row in our quailifier and finished 2nd to Bob by half a straight, we went home that night and on the way in at the corner of 10th and western I stopped at the light and looked over and there was a cop getting the shit beat out of him by 3 guys, well 3 on 1 isn't a fair fight so I jumped out and rendered a little assistance, 1 guy escaped, I managed to get one guy on the ground and hold him while the cop handcuffed the other 1, then the hard part started I had to fill out all these reports on what happened and was questioned by no less then 4 differant officer's, so by the time that ordeal was over and I made that last block to the shop it was 5:00AM so I just slept at the shop got up about 8:00AM washed the car did all of the maintaince and found some stuff in the filter so I had to change motors, during all of this I had to go up to see The Old Man and ck in on him, when I was finally ready to head to Tulsa I stepped on the clutch pedal in the dually and the clutch ball broke off the side of the block, now I was getting pressed for time so I had to break out the old red ford p/u load all of the stuff out of the dually into old red and head out, when I finally arrived at Tulsa we were way late and we kinda had to hog us up a spot on that front row along the fence, just rolled it out of the trailer and bolted the wing on and had to hot lap, well during hot laps Shorty felt a vibration and suspect the bushing in the slider drive line so we had to pull the drive line out and change it and sure nuff that bushing was bad. Well we worked right up to race time and wound up just raising the car up and putting about 30pts lower gear in it with a new 1591 M-40 RR, we started inside 3rd row I believe and on the start going into turn 1 Crawford or Sewell got in under Bob and sled them up the hill and Shorty was able to come off turn 2 running 2nd to Bob, Bob drove her to the pole and Shorty went in high in turn 3 and drove by Bob off of turn 4 and never looked back, that race went non-stop 50 laps no yellows, it was slick as snot in 1&2 and in 3&4 everybody was running right on the pole except for Shorty and he ran the top about as close to the fence as you could get, after 25 laps he had lapped up to 7th and was just mowing them down that car would come off the corner almost doing wheelie's there were a few stories going around that we were a second a lap faster then 2nd & 3rd place. At the end he had lapped up to 4th and was just a lap away from doing that, beat Bob by 3/4th of a lap, it was a great win for our team at a very tough time, The Old Man recovered some and was able to be back at the races the following week but it was turmulious times, we would battle Bob al the way to the end but he prevailed, NCRA took our points from the USAC/NCRA race after we were DQ'd 30/45 minutes after that race for a bleeder violation (thats a story I've already posted here) Anyway on the way home I had a flat on the trailer, changed it and made it back to the shop about 4:00AM I was beat cleaned up a little went to the hospital to check on The Old Man and he was sound aleep, there was nobody in that other bed in his room so I just crawled up in it to catch up on some z's woke up about 6:00AM as nurse Broom Closet had came in to ck on Pat, I woke just in time as he was trying to get her to give me a shot in the butt, well she wasn't very amused and after the butt chewing I recieved from her I never laid down in that bed again!!!

David great story, I was at the USAC/NCRA race and thought that you got screwed by USAC. Did Mike finish 4th or 5th in that race with a shock broke loose?

Bkcr,

If I remember right MP finished 4th, I don't know about the shock but the following year '86 he ran 4th in Mr. Bill's Black #97 and seems that was 2 years in a row that he had ran 4th, MP had actually moved up to 3rd with about 12/15 laps to go and right at the end the RR tire gave up a little and he fell back to 4th. I remember I wanted him to pass Vogler so bad as at the time I was maintaining both Shorty's and Mr Bill's cars but the NCRA guys give those USAC guys a pretty good wiping any way!!

Jackie looks salty in that trophy pic above, and JD will love that pit pass attached to Jackie's uniform I still wish we used those. Jackie was an ace I wonder who we have today who would be close to him? He could build the chassis, the componet's, the engines, drive it to the track & then kick your ass on the track!!!!!!!

David the year that you won the USAC/NCRA show, how did the USAC officials act and were they real picky on the inspection?
