David, Benny almost won the last race at the old track at the Tulsa fairgrounds in Pat's car. I was there and remember a lot of it but it sure helps to have My NCRA year book. The last race was a NCRA 50 lap feature on October 13, 1973. The track stayed heavy and fast and Benny timed in fastest at18.84. James Eubanks in Joe Cox's 33 was the only other drive under 19 seconds with an 18.98. Harold had retired in July and had already clinched the championship but there was a battle for second between Emmett, Frankie and DE. Jackie Howerton was there driving the Zink roadster. Benny lead the first 46 laps then slowed and James got around him, the yearbook said he was leaking transmission fluid and burnt his feet, he still managed to finish 2nd. James win in Joe's car was very popular, Joe had been around forever and had given Emmett his big break. Jackie finished 5th, Emmett lost his brakes and finished 13 one spot ahead of DE, Frankie won the B but a seat brace broke and he didn't finish the A, so Emmett finished 2nd in the standings. The Car that Benny was driving I always thought was a Nance car because of the body style. When did Jelly build it for Pat and is it the same car that Grady wade and George Armstrong drove for Pat?

Bkcr,
I didn't get to attend that race but remember the history of it pretty well, I believe in your year book that they have a pic of James passing Benny, Pat did have a Nance car it was rectangle or channel main rails which he ran in the late '60's and '70/'71 Bobby Reynolds and Grady drove it that I remember, Jim could verify this as he and his dad worked on the car the were a terror at Enid and won several races there, I think Jim or Brian have posted a pic or 2 of this car on this thread. If I remember right and I'm 99% sure The Old Man bought the Jelly car during the winter '71/'72 it was a Single rail round tube spring front Paraellell bar car but it had the ducktail type body on it like the Nance car, Jelly built a couple cars with this style body most notable to mind the #999/#333 that Myron Rust and Harold Leep drove. George drove this car and of course later Benny drove it, it was ducktail but didn't have the T-Top to start with, DP put the T-Top on it over the winter of '72, Benny crashed it pretty good in '73 and they had cross torsion put on it, it was faster after they had this done. In '75 after Benny was hurt Larry Holman and his owner Evertt Walton had a falling out and Larry needed a ride as he was leading pts at OKC, so The Old Man repainted it red and silver and numbered it #24 and this was the car Larry finished up the year in to win the Championship, Harold also drove it at OKC during the fair as the #24, Brian has posted pic's of that car in here somewhere also. Pat sold this car to Alvin Bennett and he won a championship at the big Tulsa track driving this car, I'm not a 100% sure what finally happened to it but have seeen pic's on this site of some differant Tulsa racers driving it (Steve Overton) is one. The car won the championship at OKC in "73 with some sub help by the #39/#50 CAE car that Ronnie Brotherton and Stan Schoenberg drove, Finished the points run at OKC in "75 filling in for Holmans #21 and with Alvin winning Tulsa in '76 it was at least part of 3 championship teams in it's early years

My ex-wife and I stopped at a gas station at Harvard and I -44 after the races and Pat aways there for some reason, he was not getting gas, we stopped and looked the car over and we both thought it was great. I think that George drove it that night but I am not sure and do not know how he did. I was really surprised that this car did not have knock offs on the front.
In 1974 Norman bought his first brand new race car rom Jelly, the 117 that Gene See drove. The 17 was not new when he bought it from David Moore. The 117 cost him $4,700, turn key. It was a very good car with good parts on it. In the winter of 77-78 the new Stanton car cost over $9, 000 turn key. The Stanton was more modern with a space frame and power steering, but with the cost doubling in 4 years, I think that this had a lot to do with death of supers and every body going to sprints that they could race all over the country. What does ever-body else thinnkabout this?

I found my Harold Leep tape and watched it last night. It is probaly 15 years old and I was surprised it still played good but I wish that I could put it on a disc. Can I take it somewher and have this done?
It really had a lot of interesting information on it. The final standings at Tulsa in 1969 were:
Driver car# feature wins races points
1 Harold Leep 2 13 26 6605
2 Jackie Howerton 1 6 25 4125
3 Emmet Hahn 33 27 4080
4 Buddy Cagle 52 3 25 3215
5 Jack Belk 37 24 2215
6 Ray Crawford 45 27 1830
7 Dale McDaniel 81 1 22 1790
8 Junior Taft 22 26 1755
9 Dale Reed 58 18 1240
10 Chick Shaddox 17 26 1215
Other drivers with feature wins
14 Ron Fowler 77 1 15 985
18 Melvin Rodgers 54 1 15 830
21 Frankie Lies 55 2 3 765
I really enjoyed watching that tape again

Most portrait studios have that capability down here. Usually ten bucks. You can send me a copy of the tape(not the original) and I'll have it done for you( I know a good outfit closeby), provided I can get a disc copy myself. I want one too. Let me know.
BEFORE YOU GIVE THEM THE TAPE, MAKE A GOOD COPY OR TWO JUST IN CASE !!!!!!! IN FACT, JUST GIVE THEM A COPY AND KEEP THE ORIGINAL.

I am thinking that Alvin Bennett sold the car to Roger Igert. I have pics of Roger driving the car. It is the same color combinations; I wanna think it was # 71. I will have to make a couple of phone calls, but I think I am right. I don't know why I think I am right, I can't remember what I had for breakfeast this morning.
Now, I need a rumor cleared up and the 76 car. From what I understand, the 1976 version of that car, the washers were bicenntinial, quarters, nickels and dimes. Urban legend or truth.

Bkcr,
This is the old Nance car, Bobby Reynolds drove it alot and won some races in it, quite a few at Enid. Jim could give us alot of history on this car as his dad Steve worked for the Old Man and helped on the car, this is the old econoline van that Jim has posted about taking all those trips to Enid in, Grady Wade also drove this car some, George may have drove it some but I don't think he drove for The Old Man until he had the Jelly car, the bodies and paint were almost idenical but the frames and suspension were quite abit differant.
As to those front hubs they might not have been knock-offs but they were trick, they were built by Dave White and were the first aluminum hubs that I ever saw, they were quite abit lighter then a Halibrand or CAE knock-off front hub.
As to the washers that's a legend story, some of it true but not to the extent that some people have made it sound like. The Old Man had a thing for coins, mainly silver dollars, they use to pay at 81 SPDY with them, he had wood cases full of them that he and Harold won, some of those are still buried as far as I know, one time we took a ride on Sunday and went some where and buried 2 cases full I hope that there still there today, kinda like a time capsule, they had news paper articles about there A-Feature wins in each case. Know that is legend to go along with alot of the legends about those drivers and times. I still carry 1 of those silver dollars in my pocket, ever day, since June 11, 1976 I've carried that silver dollar, it is one of my most valued posession's, Pat gave it to me and said son you'll never be broke as long as you carry it, so I've always had at least 1 dollar in my pocket since then and haven't been broke since.

Oh yes I remember the silver dollars Norman always paid for every thing with them. I know of one wife who tried to make a Bank deposit in Wichita through the vacuum system. She filled the Plastic case full of silver dollars, it got stuck and the bank had to get maintenance workers t o open up the system. I don't think that she ever did live this down. It was not Mike's wife.

If you can find a new tape, I'm sure that would be best. Wal Mart could have one.

Brian my wife will take to work tomorrow to mail to you, let me know when you receive it. I put a lot of stamps on it, we don't mail very much anymore and it was a good way to use them, my wife will weigh it at work tomorrow to make sure it has enough postage and will add if needed.
