Luther, I was looking at "High Plains Thunder" and notice a picture of Dale McDaniels on page 19 racing in the KC area in 1959. There is another picture of him at Joplin on page 91 in1969. As far as I can rember 1969 was the only year that he raced in the Tulsa area, he had a pretty good year in 1969 at the old Tulsa race track, he finished in the top 10 and won 1 or 2 features. That was the " LEEP" year and Harold did not leave a lot af races for the other competiters. Where did Dale race at between 1959 and 1969 and where did he race at after 1969? I don't rember him coming to Tulsa after 1969. His son Larry raced late models and worked at the "Nance" shop. I like the picture of you and your daughter on page 28 in High Plans Thunder.

Ray

Ray,...Dale McDaniels raced in the KC area quite a bit in the 60s. He died an early death of kidney failure. I don't remember what year that was. I saw his widow, Dixie at Lakeside Speedway 2 years ago at the oldtimers day. She used to be a lap counter nearly everywhere he raced. He drove the Johnnie Layne #81 roadster most of that time. That was my youngest daughter at about 7 years old in the picture. She was the one that spent a lot time in the garage with me. ..Luther

Luther, was that an Indy roadster that Dale Mcdaniels drove at Tulsa or was it built as an off set super modified?

Ray,...The roadster that Dale drove that belonged to Johnnie Layne was an off set supermodified built by Layne. It was a copy of the one Greg Weld built & was successful. Greg's is pictured on page 67 of Bob May's "High Plains Thunder".There was several in the KC area, copies by Bill Utz (sedalia), Dick Miller (Osawatomie), James Bond (KC) & I'm sure others. Then only Indy Roadster I remember was owned by Heathman in Columbia, Mo & driven by Russell Hibbard in the early 60s. It ran in central, Mo.....Luther

Ray,.. Since you were around Tulsa a lot, I"m going to tell you an experience I had in 1984 while running the pits at I-70 Speedway. The World of Outlaws ran there twice that year. For the WoO, I was a helper for their Chirf Pit stewart. Once I was going along the haulers to each crew to make sure they had checked the lineups posted on a big board in the pits.

I walked up to the hauler for Ron Shuman & the Offixco black & orange #21 WoW car. Three young guys were sitting on the rear floor & as I walked up, one of the guys asked if I was Luther Brewer. I told him I was and he proceeded to tell me I wasn't so hot. He had quite a bit to say but I thought it was odd as I did not know anybody in Tulsa or Phoenix & only ran Tulsa twice. I couln't imagine where he came up with that. The other two guys acted suprised at his telling me what he thought. No had feelings on my part, I thought it was amusing.......Luther

Luther I'm sorry that you had that experience with the Ofixco bunch. Some of them had the reputation that they thought they were the best thing that ever happened to racing. David knows about this, but most of them were pretty good guys.

I have a stupid tech question-

With that eternal concern about 'Ackerman' on frontends, would a shorter steering arm on the left front make a difference? Seems like this would slow down the speed at which the right front would turn, keeping it closer to 'in toe' as it turns to the right.

-note--If this is a brilliant idea, give me credit, ---IF IT'S A STUPID IDEA, blame it on JD or Uncle a! Just kiddin.

Darrell Waltrip mentioned Ackerman on the trucks qualifying for Martinsville. 1st I have ever heard it on a race show.

Don't know how long the video will be up??

Got a couple of neat stuff's through the emails from Shane Carson. If you EVER get the chance to see what he has kept over the years, do it! You rarely see a driver of his caliber, with a well kept and organized set of programs, pictures etc. I got glance at 2 or 3 of the scrapbooks he had at the last get together we had.

Dale McDaniels ran alot in Joplin in the Modifieds coupes and sedans,He would win a Feature every now an then.I would have to look it up on what years, but he ran i believe in Joplin from about 62 or 63 all the way untill 69 ,69 was the last year they ran Supers in Joplin,.He may have ran there earlyer than that,,i would have to look to make sure.

They ran coupes and sedans untill 67 ,in 68 almost all off them were gone ,in 68 and 69 they were almost all Supers. Dale was top 5 in Points several of them years,i dont think he ever won the points title in Joplin but he sure firted with it. He drove for Corky Felker one of the top car builders in Joplin one year i know of . I have several pictures of him in several different cars. I have a picture of the starting line up of the 69 Muskogge Nationals. Dale set on ther Pole of that race in the car you and Luther are talking about. Dale would show up at alot of Races i am not sure were he went after 69 . He sure would pop up at different races from time to time.I am sure he raced somewhere.

Dale was another one of them Drivers that would travel to find the competion. In the Mid 60s in Joplin you had Larry Phillips and Dean Roper, Jack Belk, Chick Shaddox, Bud Hatch, Duane Beckham on a weekly basis,Dale won his share and was another one of them drivers that could be fast in a bad car.

Win as if you are use to it.And lose as if you enjoyed
it for a change. Its hard to get to the top and alot
harder to stay there.

Brian, Got a hold of a Mar. 22nd edition of the Ada Evening Newspaper and your May 16th race is mentioned in the article , Article said there is interest from Tx. and Ks. and Indianapolis , Sounds like Mr. Welch is pretty pumped up about the deal.

Did you get the pics of the car I emailed you?

Yes I got them, I just got home.

There is interest from Indy? Wonder who that is? Realistically I'm not sure we'll have any cars from Indy, but it's nice someone heard about us.

Did Joplin run on Tuesday evenings? I rember a lot of the Tulsa racers talking about how much fun it was to race at Joplin. I belive that your father ran the old Nance house car after it was sold. It sure did look better after it was re-painted and numbered to 88. In the 70-71 season several cars ran a wood rear bumper. I think they did on the number 88,didn't they? I would enjoy any sories or pictures that you could post.

He's got a lot of reasons to be for someone not looking to make a profit if at all. He's giving up the windfall to build a nice event. I've been running behind on the Ada show worrying about Wichita Falls and I need to get the fires back up.

Ray,, that is right Dad drove the Nance house car in 70 and 71 in Tulsa for the Johnsons, that was the Dad and Grand Father of Guys that have the Edmonds bodys down by Joplin, we still race togethter sometimes..we are close friends, they are nice people. I had not thought about the wood bumper in a while but i think you were right.

Yes they ran on Tuesday nights it was neat because it let my Dad run other places and it let other Drivers run here to ,and it did not conflicted with there local tracks. In 66 a few of the Tulsa guys started showing up and in 67 a bunch came . They had a mix of Supers and Coupes and Sedans, I got a picture of my Brother Randy in a Sedan in a big pile up on top of about 3 Supers. The Tulsa guys were alittle ahead of the change. The spot brakes on some of the supers had caused some bent bumpers.

In 67 Emmitt Hahn , Pete York , ran here every week we had some great races. You put Hahn ,York, Belk ,Hatch ,Shaddox, MaDaniels, Roper,Al Lemmons, and Fred Tullis , Duane Beckham and several and some others from Tulsa and here and watch them all come from the back .It was just Darn good races. O Bill Crouch also was from here he ran Tulsa alot.

If i ever learn how to put photos on this sight i got some great shots of Hahn, and York and several others from Tulsa, running at Joplin and 71 Speedway that was in Neosho just south of Joplin.Your name is Ray are you the Ray i think you are. TIM

If you need pictures posted, send them to me and I'll post them for you.

And yes, the shows we are doing down here are 100" wb(supermods/modifieds) cars mainly. They are the backbone of what we are trying to do here. We are also open to vintage sprint/midget/(non-downtube) and old Silver Crown cars as well as coupes and sedans. They will be at Wichita Falls April 25-26, and Ada, Ok may 16-17. Ada is going to be much closer to you and we'll also be having a swap meet started there too. Call me and I'll give you all the details. The more cars we get, the more others will want to get their old ones out, the closer to your town these shows can be in the future. Show or go, it is all good.

My phone number is 580-465-8351. When it comes to these shows, if I don't answer the phone, I will shortly, 24 hr.s a day.

Joplin to Ada,Ok is about 230 miles. i know that's a long ways, but then a big turnout, a lot of pictures and video will build the ideas of more shows maybe up through there.

Building the network is the key. Everybody likes something, this cowboy is a supermodified/modified/silver crown guy. 96"-100" wheelbase, open wheel ,upright, straight axle, driver in the middle, old school cars from the old days.( Have to be clear, don't want any vintage IMCA modifieds showing up to mess with our heads)

Dont worry i would not do that to you with a IMCA Mod,I am as much a Super fan as you ,,i just got stuck here were the Supers left and the fenders and IMCA Mod took over.,I call it Fenderasuckleosisis.this area still has the  infection.

There is a guy here named Comer that has 10 to 15 Supers and Sprints. I think he only has a few raceable, but he has 2 or 3 Coupes and Sedans he has that are raceable. He has a couple of Cageless Sprints. We talk sometimes he is always trying to find out where the cars he has purchased raced at ,he has some from the Ok 60s and 70s area. He does a great job of Rebuilding them to look like they did,,he has some that he has that he has not had to redo because they still look like they did back then. I will tell him about what you are doing.. and pass you number along..I will also tell a few guys in Springfield also.   Thanks Brian   230  miles aint bad for a good blast from the past.    Tim
