Same as Bubby's car back then. In fact I am tempted to style it exactly like this car below.

Nice looking car. Nice lines...Slight reverse rake & wrinkled rear tire. ....Luther

This car I think came from Wyoming. Oh by the way, have I said I liked these cars? LOL
Much as I talk about the old supers, I do like some of the sprint tailed cars.

David,
By Nance in '85-'86 do you mean one of these? This is Charles Riney,
![nanceCharlesRiney1986.jpg picture by brian26_photos_2007](http://i201.photobucket.com/albums/aa251/brian26_photos_2007/Nance/nanceCharlesRiney1986.jpg?t=1235778683)

Brian,
This is a trick shot, do you see the extra header Charles carryed???? This is the basic chassis Nance built in this time, what I'm talking about has to do with the placement of the torsion tubes, in this time period Carol was playing with the splits and off sets of the torsion tubes, he tried several combinations one combo worked alot better then all others!!! If you just walked up and looked at it you couldn't tell the difference. Stan's car had one of the special set-up's and that car was hands down better then any Stanton, Gambler or Rich car. Stan hot lapped the Gambler at the end of '86 Shane was gone and we had just put a new SS/BB motor in and wanted to test it, he ran it at OKC and was awesome fast but he will tell you FLAT OUT he had never set behind a motor like that one, he ran her 8800 and was just driving by guys like they were stopped. Stan had set a 8 lap heat record the week before and he said his motor was nowhere as powerful as that one.

What's the deal with the extra header? Looks like a bit of humor in an odd way.
Stan was awesome fast for sure in those days.

Just curious David or anybody out there,
Has anybody ever thought of using reverse flow? Looks like fuel injection would work on this badboy. Apparently the results are good if you know what you're doing and add that with a reverse rotation on dirt, could be a killer combo.

Brian,
Some years ago there were a couple tried reverse flow at Indy. Reverse rotation is common, there is more then you think running at OKC right know, I know of 3-4 in injected class and probably that many or more in 2v class it's surprizing what it will do in a 2v!!!!

I know Charley Ford had a 89 Mid Rail Nance that he got at an Auction in Wichita as a Kit, Had the Wedge hood and the Car worked really well and it ran several years until it mets it's end at Tri State Speedway in Ft. Smith , Ark. , it was one of those high in the air flips and nosed down on the front end and that was all she wrote for that chassis.

noticed you guy's discussing the wedge front end design. back in the 1980s nance built several cars with wedge hoods, a good example of which is on the laverne nance memorial pages , look at page 2 , t.j.gettings driving a nance sprint with the hood, notice there was no lack of air inside the engine baywith the top panel releasing plenty of air. quite possible to race the car without the outside air tubes to the injectors .

Luther, Do you have any stories about some of the drivers that we are familiar with in this area, to share with us. How did your car do in the 1966 nationals, tha Jay Woodside won?

Ray, I just wrote a long article & it didn't post about the 66 Nationals. I Got aquainted with Herald Leep, Dale Reed, Grady Wade, Roy Bryant, Chet Wilson the Forshees, LaVerne Nance & visited with Jollie W, Pius T & some of the others.
One Friday evening at Topeka, Ray Lee was late for warm ups. I asked Dale Reed (he & Grady were there without rides) if he would warm up the car & if Ray Lee didn't make it, I would like him to drive it. That was in 66 & I had the T Coupe car. Dale took it out & in a few laps he was running so hard I found myself turning in circles on my tip toes trying to keep up with him. Ray Lee came up to the back fence & saw him hot lapping. Dale liked the car.
Grady Wade drove for me a couple of times in 1969 (a different car) & won at Topeka pretty easy. I will let him tell you about it. In fact I saw him at Lakeside Speedwas in KCKS in Aug of 07 & he rembered the runs.... 66 Knoxville Nationals later....Luther

Ray,...Story of the 66 Knoxville Nationals from my point of view. I had the T Coupe car and had been doing pretty good. We qualified 5 th. There was 96 cars there including Don Edmunds. (Don was pitted close by & looked my car over pretty good. That was a compliment) I dont remember how we ran in the preliminary races. Jay was having engine trouble in the #9 Saturday night. Ted Hall (the car owner) drained all of the water out of the cooling system and filled it with motor oil & was going to try to run like that. Then, it rained out the feature. He worked all night & installed a new engine for Sunday.
We lined up on the track for the feature & Sparky Carver (with my crew) ran across the highway to a landraumat & got a bottle of bleach. We soaked the rear tires down to soften them up for traction. Kenny Weld was starting next to us. Pappy Weld ask if we had any left, he would like to have it. We gave him what was left. The reason we did this is because we had I V recaps on the rear. (I V was a recapping service in Tampa Florida) The rears were 12" on RR & 11" on the LR. & about 2" stagger. They were pretty hard.
We took the lead about lap 5 and led through the 18 th lap. Ray Lee spun between turns 3 & 4 but kept the car going. We were running 9 th for another 4 or 5 laps & the lower shaft in the quick change twisted off. That ended our run. That is the same car that won the 67 Knoxville Nationals after I sold it to Jack Cunningham in late June 67.
I threw in the bottle of bleach because it cause quite a stir at the moment.......Luther

To All,
Luther, I wonder today if any body uses bleach to soften there tires. I here about alot of differant stuff guys do now days so of it sounds goofy to me. Here around home I have never used anything on tires but 1 of my friends use to use bleach, he put it inside the tire and would let it soak during the week on a rotiserery then drain in and wipe it out and run it. He was leading the A-FEA at OKC 1 night when over 1/2 the tread came off the RR tire going down the frt stretch, it took the header, nerf bar & the Right side of the wing off with 2 laps to go, funny thing the carcess stayed up for a little while.
I was thinking about doing a Top 10 Modified List pre '70 then '70 to '80, Jim you have any idea's, I can remember sitting in those bleachers at OKC as a kid watching all the Patton's, the Brotherton's, CH Cave, Bill Parker, Big John DeVeny, Ray Borrow, George Turk, Russ Hill, Troy Matchen, Dutch ter Steege etc. That #501 was bitch'in fast.
Gary did you drive a big car or did you start in the small cars?
Well we're getting ready to start a new season, maybe the last at OKC I wish 1 night they would roll the cars out and do those introductions maybe have Jack Miller back and do them. I wish 1 night we could race on the 1/2 mile also but most of all I would love to see those grandstands full of fans 1 last time!! As Brian says it would be neat, SUPERS BACK 1 NIGHT SPECIAL FIRECRACKER NATIONALS!!!!!
It's been a long week going to bed, I'm writing a story tomorrow night about a Tulsa race in '85, I hope the rest of you will write a story this weekend so we'll have some good reading for Sunday night!!!!!!!

About Dutch Ter Steege,
When my brother went to racing over at Lawton in the 80's, we found Dutch was still racing 6 bangers. He was a long in the tooth veteran but still a huge threat to win on any night. He had knockoffs on his trailer of all things, I thought it was just to be fancy! Turns out it was probably all he had then.
Dutch won a lot races back then and we'd read about him in the Oklahoman now and then in the postings. One day I looked his car over just to get an idea as to what a REAL racer used and how he did it. Boy what a surprise, homemade inboard brake, bolts missing, mixed and matched peices. Seemed like there were spots that really needed a spacer or two, almost nearly finished state but not quite. Then he'd go out and rattle off another feature win!
He used everything until it was no longer usable it seemed. I have yet to see a car that was bought from him, he eeked every last bit luck out of a car and made it work. What he has left is what survived. Good luck, bad luck, everything in between, I consider him the genuine article.
