Mike , I remember the Radio broadcast really well,it was a great thing , no telling how many last minute people that it brought to the races, in fact a gentlemen who use to work for the IRS in the Lawton area would come in the 70's every Sat. night and sat by us and bring his AM transistor radio and we would all listen to the play by play call of the races when you could hear it, as a 10-12 yr. old kid that was pretty big time to me.
Yey Lanny had a great media deal back then with paper , radio , even T.V. in Lawton and lots of what they call prominent business owners in Lawton use to go to the races every Sat. night back then,I remember R.H. Drury which owned Lawton Cablevision and KSWO Radio and T.V. back then , not sure if he still owns any of them but anyway , he owned them all and was a BIG race fan back then and that had to help contribute to the great media coverage, heck Gene Burk of Gene Burk Auto Glass use to come and bring a push jeep every Sat. night and P.G. Waggoner of Waggoner Carpets use to come on Saturdays and the Yarmuks who use to own Lawton Iron and Metal and lots of Attorney's use to show up Myron L. Burton is one that I can think of and of course seemed almost all the Automotive Industry folks Car Dealerships Mechanics and Salvage Yards owners and workers showed up every Sat. night as they either Sponsored or owned a car running, Plumbing Companies , seemed the list could go on. Most all of them use to sit right across from us in the Reserved Section just about every Sat. night.
Can remember driving down just about any main thoroughfare in Lawton in the 70's, mainly Lee Blvd. and 2nd St. but also Cache Rd. and Sheridan and see Race Cars parked out front of business during the week that either sponsored or was the owner of the car , all types of Cars ,Supers, Modifieds , Hobby Stocks , Late Models.
Heck I remember Bill Tutwiller with his Phillips 66 Gas Station there on east Lee Blvd. by Leo's Truck Stop would have his 6 Cyl. pulled out by the road all week and he use to say that more people would ask about the race car and he would tell them to come watch on Sat. night.
Your right Mike No Promotion like that anymore and it is really ashame because it is needed more now than ever with so many options of entertainment today for folks to spend their money.

I was just going through a stack of programs last night from Lawton , OKC, Tulsa , Amarillo , Wichita , Hutch, Tri State, Enid, Devils Bowl , Ada-Echo from th e 70's and 80's and was at it for about 4 hrs. and still not halfway through the stack of programs, have not looked at some of them in 20 yrs. and I seen a pic of Mr. Jerry Schwartz #22 I think in 1983 OKC program and a whole bunch of others , quite a deal, even seen Dick Shelton from Ada,OK. in a 6 cyl. Modified #99 known as the "Widow Maker" car from 1973 in about 7 pics in and out of the car and he looks a whole lot like his boy Blake Shelton the country music star, Pretty cool deal and even found a pic of David Grace with timing light in hand and a zip tie between his teeth with Bill Beaman standing beside him beside the 97 car and seen a pic of a young Jim Messmer in a pic of track officials for Fairgrounds Speedway in an 82 or 83 program and shots of Tony Armstrong in and out of the car in some OKC programs, just to name a few who post on here and many other names and faces that are still in the sport or have gotten out of it.
One pic was a former driver who was quite the Hollywood showman , Jett Starr with the BIG Hair and all in the pit area at OKC.

To All,
In '84 I did 1 and I repeat 1 race with Jett Starr, his dad dropped by the shop 1 day and talked to The Old Man about fixing there engine, seems Boyd had built them a nice 9/16th motor but Jett's brother worked on it and messed it up, so Pat made him a deal and I was voluntired for 1 race to make sure the motor was right. Pat fixed the motor and I went down and helped put it in and got it running. We went to Lawton to run and I guess my 1 night of engine tuner turned into a full service crew chief night, I had to drive that old blue & pink crew cab truck down there as Jett & his dad were the only one's to go and they hadn't pulled a trailer before. Any way we started outside front row of the heat and surprizingly he won the motor ran great, the track was fast and tacky had that famous little rut about 1/2 way up going into turn 1, in the dash Jett started on the pole and going into the first turn he hopped a wheel and turned over REAL EASY!!! My thinking at this point was ok short night we'll go home. Well after about 10 minutes the track crew still hadn't got him out of the car so I headed down to turn 1, it had barely damaged the wing the car wasn't hurt but for a shock and radius rod Jett was laying in there moaning, I yelled at him Jett your making a scene get your a-- out of the car so they can get the races going, well he jumped out of there and stomped back to the pits, I rode back on the car, as we pulled up no Jett in sight only his dad, we dropped the car and I fixed the front end and fixed the wing a little and was ready to go, I asked his dad where is Jett he told me David you hurt his feelings and he's in the back seat of the truck, so I went up and opened the door and told him Jett it's fixed get your stuff ready for the A-Fea. he wouldn't speak to me but did give me the your an a--ho-- look. He started 7th in the A-Fea and ran a real good 3rd, when he came in he had big tears in his eyes and went straight to the truck, we loaded up and headed out, stopped to get gas and Jett went in he came out with 2 big 40's in a sack, before we left the gas station he had already drank 1 by the time we were out to medicine park he had drank the 2nd one, nobody was talking and in a mile or 2 I realized he was crying again and was falling over in the seat, pretty soon I'm as far over against the door as I can get, I said Jett what in the F--- are you doing and he started saying he was sorry about what happened and the way he acted, well by now he almost had his head in my lap I couldn't scoot any further so I told him Jett sit your a-- up or I'm opening the door and stepping out, so he sit right back up and there wasn't 5 words said the rest of the trip!!! After that I could talk to him but I told Pat if you ever voluntier me like that again I'm going to kick your a--, didn't phase him abit as he voluntiered me several times more!!!!!!

David, Now that is to dam funny, still laughing , that is hilarious, Like I have told you before you hear stories about the past and ya know or kind of know the people your reading about and it just makes it that much more hilarious. I remember watching him one time in the pit area trying to take off a LR wheel after Hot Laps and well it was when the wheel nut whacker had come out and well he was bangin away on it to the right to try and loosen it and took about 5 min. of that before someone finally told him your tightening the wheel and then he had it on nice and tight then and took some effort to get it off by then but eventually got it.
Yep that pink & blue 3+3 Chevy Crew Cab he had with Hollywood in yellow letters down the side of the Pick Up Bed if I remember right, really David that is one funny story.LOL

David,
Please keep the stories coming. This is the first thing I do in the mornings is look at the website and see if there are any new stories posted. I remember that blue and pink truck Jett drove. Wasn't his race car blue with a pink wing. No. 74 if I remember right. If not, please correct me.
You should have kicked Tim Thomas' ass the night he blew up one of Pat's motors in Lawton. I remember you loaned it to Tim and Gary one night without telling Pat. It went up in flames during the heat race going down the back stretch. It was still on fire when it rolled to a stop in the pits after exiting in turn three. This was towards the end of the year after the modifieds in OKC had finished their season. We were going to run the fall shows with that motor as long as it lasted. Turns out it lasted one heat race. It was probably one of your experimental motors you put together.

TW97A, Jett had 2 numbers 96 to start out with and then had #100 when he was sponsored by KATT FM Radio 100.5 out of OKC , I don't remember the exact scheme he had but with Jett it was definately loud bright colors.
Show up Sat. night TW97A and you can hear some of those stories in person.
David and a bunch of others from what I hear and a cast of 1000's , should be a good time.

Your right, it was #96.
Do you remember who the sponsor was on the 96?

I got the scoop on "Hollywood" Jett Starr. I lettered all of his cars and even the 3+3 tow truck. Jet was sponsored by Dagwell Dixie, his dad Alan owns it, and his brother Drug I mean Doug was in charge of Race Operations. lol
The funniest thing about that is Doug would do all the set up in the shop (like he knew what he was doing) and would never come to the track. I think I saw Doug at the track maybe two times the whole time Jett drove. I would be down at Dagwell Dixie lettering his car and more than once when the parts delivery kid that worked for them would back up to the door and unload a new or freshened motor from Louis Boyd. The first thing Doug would do is mount it up to the engine stand and start tearing it apart. Guess he had some speed secrets Louis didn't know about.
Anyway I started calling him "Hollywood" around his shop and he liked it so much he started going by "Hollywood" Jett Starr. All of his cars were blue, the first one I lettered was #96, then he went to #74.
There was some controversy after I lettered the 100.5 KATT car. He was not sponsored by them and was told he would have to remove anything related to KATT radio, but since his mother had holdings with the company that owned the radio station they came out with an agreement. He never would say how much it cost him to run that on his car.
I will say though his dad Alan at Dagwell Dixie is one of the nicest guys you would ever want to meet.

LOL...great story. What happened to Jett? Hope he isn't a lawyer that hangs around vintage race sites. Did he come from the same gene pool as KC Spurlock?
And, just what is Dagwell Dixie, something to do with oilfield?

Dagwell Dixie is an industrial supply house that sells bearings, belts, etc., to the heavy construction and crushing industry.

TW97A,
That motor was an odd duck it was one of our old 302's that I had bored and put a SJ 327 crank in it had a 5.825 rod that we had Bill Miller do the pistons for, Pat had told me that those pistons wouldn't hold up and he was right!! We had ran the engine on our engine stand and it was broke in but The Old Man wouldn't run it because he knew it would break but we ran alot of engines that we knew would break so I gave it to Gary & Tim to run, it did last hot laps you know!! Pat wasn't mad as it was all of that old stuff, we gave them another motor later that was a pretty good piece and I think you guys ran it 3-4 times, the motor we loaned Jarvis though was a bad SOB it would fly even though it had iron heads they were 292 Mondello's. Probably the most experimental motor I built in that era was a 302 that we ran in the #10 Hill&Kearney car, I had Dutch cut all of the counter wgts off a 302 crank then ground everything off that was left, Pat told me it wouldn't work but he let me take it down to Rice's to let them balance it, man what an abortion, it had Howard Alum. Rods and TRW pistons which was all pretty bulky stuff. When I put it in and fired it up it sounded bad ass but you couldn't hold your hand on the roll cage because it vibrated so bad it hurt. MP tried to hot lap it but it hurt his chest to rev it up and caused him to see quadruple images going down the straight's, so I wound up puting a 350 cast crank in it and Jarvis ran it a few times.

I agree 100%. I had a great time and it was good seeing guys I haven't seen in years. I have to thank Cecil Satterwhite for giving me a front door home last night for my 55 chevy. I have been working on this hot rod for a few years and I finally felt comfortable enough to give it a road trip. Guess what? When I left the Round Up, I had no headlights. I had park lights, brake lights, turn signals, just no headlights. Just like the old days leaving Lawton with alternator not working in truck pulling trailer, etc., etc. Lawton had a figure 8 race that night and Ricky Jennings went to one of the left over figure 8 cars and borrowed an alternator and battery to put in our truck to make it home. We also had borrowed a starter from one of the figure 8 cars after the feature. I won the feature and Lanny decided to puff the top 5 and my car would not turn over. Those figure 8 races he used to have saved the day many time.

You probably know this, but 99 times out of 100, it is either a broken or corroded wire at the dimmer switch, or the switch itself. You get guys poking in wires with electric ice picks, then get some moisture, and it will corrode enough wire inside the insulation to kill the current. Pretty quick to tell by using a jumper wire at the connector to the dimmer switch. All this assuming you haven't changed out the steering column to a later one with the dimmer in the turn signal.

Actually I have changed column to late model tilt and do have an aftermarket wiring harness. I found the problem this AM in the light of day. The connector had come undone from main harness. If I had brought tools or flashlight with me, it was very easy to see as it was hanging down.
