David,

Looked for you at the Chili Bowl but never caught up with you. I did have a great time visiting with Shane and he took me over to the Jennings pit area where he thought you were. That was the first time I had been in 16 years. I saw people I hadn't seen in a long time and got to see some good racing. Hutch was a big part of my life as a kid and as a driver. I won that race in '86 driving for Lloyd Stephens but the first time I remember going there I think George was driving for Pat maybe 1972. I witnessed the fire in '74 from the stands because back then kids weren't allowed in the pits. I remember it like it was yesterday, that fire burned what seemed like an hour. They called in the city fire trucks and I was standing there when they had to use bolt cutters to cut the gate locks to even get in to fight the fire! They took George to the hospital there in Hutch and I'll never forget seein Aaron being loaded on to the helicopter. He was packed in ice and all you could see was his face.

People didnt realize how busy we were in the early 80's did they? I think we ran 70 or 80 nights a year back then and still worked full time jobs. Lots of fun though runnin OKC Friday, Tulsa on Saturday, NCRA or anywhere we could on Sunday, and maybe Liberal or if we were lucky somewhere during the week. Keep the stories going, I really enjoy them. Man you have a memory for details but I told Shane I didn't remember gettin our butts kicked by you guys as much as you say we did. Just kiddin we had a good laugh and you guys really were the ones to beat everywhere we went. Take care.

Tony

TA,

I just missed you at the photo booth, I did get to see Lyndon Moss & Benny. I looked at photos for about 3 hours that was better then the race's in my book. Not picking on Offixco bunch but your group of guys I always really liked, Stone's group and I just never got along and Pete's group I didn't get along with very well either of course there were alot of people who I didn't get along with. One thing I can tell you is that even though I might not have got along with them I had the highest RESPECT for every one of them as Racer's, we were in a unique ERA and a unique group of racer's that I hope someday will come back around. In those early '80's we could run those 100" cars over 100 times a year and even in there last years you could run like you said 70-80 times a year. Your right about people not realizing what we did to get to the race track, these kids now days are worn out just running a weekly show 20-25 weeks. I realize that traveling costs are outrageous, fuel prices, motels, help, pit passes etc. are out of line and the purse's are the same or less then when we raced no wonder there not interested in racing more. Pat thought me something that I try to race by even today, RACE as HARD for $500.00 as you would for $5000.00 hell the money is just a small part of it, the thrill of the win, running 1st and winning was what it was about for us, we spent ever last cent and then some to win that is why I try to remember so well for, because in the end MONEY isn't going to do me any good it's the memories that I carry and take with me that counts. Racing against guys like you and Stone and Ewell and all of the great rivalries and memories that we have is "PRICELESS"

I believe we are talking about getting together again hope you might be able to come maybe bring Woody.

JD you and Brian got a date yet? Also Jim you gonna be able to go?

TA, Last Friday morning I got to talk to your Ofixico team mate Jerry Stone and his wife Judy at Don Hubbards wife funeral and would have like to talked more but he had to go to the Midget Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, was fun to talk about the Super/Champ Dirt days a little with him and his wife.

I'm with John on Coney Island and the Hot Dogs and Spaghetti with Chili on it and Ice Tea , Ya hear that uncle a , our problems are all solved if we get Warren to make a trip down just take him to Coney Island in Capital Hill on the Southside, surely our racing budget will afford us to splurge on a few Hot Dogs for our out of town guest.

OK, I'll throw a date out there for a get together, how about Sat. Feb. 7th , in 2 weeks, do we go to Roundup again or try another venue?, I just threw Round Up out there again because they have Space and I have a feeling this get together might have some more attendees. Some other suggestions Hooter's , Cimarron Steak House.

John , Uncle a , David , Brian , Jim or anyone else , what do you all think?

Sure would be nice if some of the readers of this site/forum/thread would post that they might show , be nice to see some VIP's post that I have heard read this forum and tell us you might show up at the next get together, I for one would like to see Alice Leep show up , Hell I have heard her tell some pretty funny stories when here and Harold Jr. lived up in Wichita, Ks. and would go racing, hell there is many more out there just to many to mention.

Round-Up and the date sounds good to me. Can we bring our own bologna sandwiches, or should we get the Coney Island to cater? LOL

We should also try to nail down what time of day would suit everybody.

The 7th would probably work for me. Where is the Roundup? Is it the one on SW 59th?

To All,

In '82 after we had split with Emmitt and Sewell hadn't started full time yet, MP drove for us a couple of times on Saturday nights or Sunday's, on 1 Friday it rained about 5:00 PM and they canceled the races at OKC, MP was in town at the track we were going to race Lawton on Saturday so we were all loaded up, he called and said would we be interested in going to the Bowl and race, well that's pretty late to leave but what the hell, Pat said you guys are crazy but I'm not riding down there have at it. About 5:30 MP & Jane Brooks & myself pulled out on to classen blvd. and headed to Dallas, when I passed the S. Canadian river I layed the ears back on that old Ford, we just had the single axle trailer then and didn't carry 1/10th the junk we do know so that Ford would run about 85-90, the trip went pretty flawless until we got on to 635 in Dallas, it was dark I was in the fast lane running about 70 (it was after the rush) and MP starts stomping on the floor board and says watch out, we had been following this big lincoln who was a couple hundred yards in front of us, what I didn't see was the motorcycle cop setting in the center who pulled right out between us and that lincoln, I locked the brakes on the truck the trailer didn't have brakes and was passing us on the right MP was stomping that floor board and getting a good hold because we were going to mow that cop down and crash, well the cop must have heard us or saw us in his mirror because he whipped back into the center and we passed him up to about the trailer then he gassed it got right up to the window and said a few choice words about my family heritage then went on after the lincoln. We made it to the track, Pat had called Lanny and told him we were headed that way so they let us drive right into the infield, parked on the back stretch and unloaded there was 1 race before the B-FEA, but we still had Lawton gear in so I started changing gears, MP ck'd the air in tires and tightened them and started getting buckled up. As I was tighting the the rear cover Jane all 98# was trying to pour lube into the can to drain into rear end out of a 5 gal. can, well about 2 quarts went down my ear but we got it done and won the B off the back, the track was drying out so as soon as MP hit the pits we made some changes on tires believe it or not we put a diamond on the RR added some fuel and Jacked some wgt in the torsion bars, started last in the A-FEA and started to the front got into the top 10 pretty early but it was rough sledding after that and it went non-stop 20 laps, we finally wound up 4th loaded everything up and drove back home it was along night. I just slept in the office and Indian Tom and Russ were there the next morning they washed the car while I cleaned up, we got the car ready and headed out to Lawton it rained a little on the way but being Lawton we got into pits and parked and it started raining I thought we were done but being Lanny he worked the track and we started heats about 9:00, we won our heat and managed a 3rd in the A-FEA, we finished about 2-2:30 in the morning. Drove home slept at shop 2nd night in a row got up and got ready to go to '81 SPDY but it rained them out early so finally got to sleep in my own bed. I was glad when Sewell started driving because I thought that would stop those last sec. trips, boy was I wrong!!!

Hard to believe that MP is still at it. Kind of like that battery bunny, and hasn't slowed down a bit.

yep ol'e mike is still racin, and is still a strong competitor having won the n.c.r.a. in 08, probably would have several mor championships except he raced a lot of other circuits over the years. my guess he will still be chasin racin as long as the old okie earnest jennings. mike keeps himself in pretty good physical condition and is very serious and in tune to his racin, it's all business with him and his son ojar.

Didn't know MP had won NCRA. Last time I saw him run was 2 years ago on a big 3/8-small 1/2 track in nothern Kansas. The 305 Rebel Sprint series has about taken over this area, and we don't get to see the 360's very often.

C Ray, the track crew and the rain gods all worked together to make a heavy, super smooth track. The hot laps were scary fast, putting crumbs about half way up the grandstand. Don't think MP really shined till the A-Feature. Can't remember if Garry Lee was there for this one, but MP took it to them in the feature. Does this old heart good to see a true veteran strap it to the young whipper snappers. LOL You're right about being in shape. I talked to him for a sec in winners circle. No doubt he still had gun slinger eyes.

YEP, MIKE WON THE N.C.R.A IN SEPT, AT 81 SPEEDWAY.. HE'S STILL A BIG FAVORITE OF MULTITUDES OF FANS, HE WAS ON THE FINISH LINE FOR OVER AN HOUR... OVER THE YEARS HE PROBABLY COULD HAVE WON SEVERAL MORE IF HE RACED ALL THE N C R A CIRCUIT !!!

RR & Bushwacker,

It is surprising that Mike has only won 2 NCRA Championships but the span between them tells a story, when he won in '87 it damn sure wasn't a give me, it was plenty tough and at a time when most would be taking care of the grand kids he turns around and wins another NCRA Championship in '08, what's that 21 yrs later and don't think this one was easy either. In '87 when he drove for Mr. Bill he had all of the financing you could ask for. This year he wins and I'm so damn proud of him because it is his and his son Ojar's deal, I can't think of anything more special!!! Tough MP is plenty of that he has survived some serious injures over the years but I've never seen him hit anything as hard as he did that front stretch wall this year at OKC, from about 90 to 0 in a sec it just impaled it into the wall, I was headed over there and I saw him out looking, not to many of these kids we have now days would have walked away from that!!!!

I hear that David on his head on into the front straight at OKC last year, Mike is one tough Hombre in my opinion, Ya know some guys in this sport have their moment and then they lose a step or two and it shows , Mike on the other hand to me has brought is A Game everytime he rolled out on the track for the last 30 + years and is a threat to win anytime at anyplace and that is surprising to me as well he has only won 2 NCRA Championships.

So Sat. Feb. 7th , Roundup Pizza S.E. 29th in Midwest City say 6:30pm , I am going to try to see Jerry Hailey , he lives down by me in Purcell and see if he might want to make it and I might try to get a hold of Glen Hunter as well and see if he might like to make an appearance.

Anybody object to the time and place above?,if so speak up.

JD,

I'm good with the time and date, have a couple of guys coming with me, plus I'm sure Jim&John Stewart will come, anybody heard from Jim? Brian is Mike going to come I know John wanted to meet him.

When MP hurt himself at Knoxville I was surprised he came back as well as he did, he was a little off but shit if you guys would have seen him, I've seen alot of driver's with pink eye but MP's were like 2 burning red coals. When I went to see him he was in a semi-private room that just had 1 TV between the beds, at first there was noboby in there with him so he could watch what he wanted, well I knew his eyes were messed up because he had to look hard left to see the TV, we were watching something on the tube and he kept looking at me as I was setting on his left man I thought he was staring at me as if I had done something wrong, I hadn't drilled any bolts out on Mussato's car so it couldn't have been that, anyway I finally asked Mike if he needed something, he said no, he kept staring at me so I finally asked what are you looking at and he said the TV which was off his right ear. Man those eyes were swollen!!!!!
