Hi, hope someone can help identify this quickchange i've got. It looks like the side covers may have been modified to take the yokes as they have aluminium bearing cases bolted to the outside, and the rest is magnesium. Any leads will be appreciated - thanks (couldn't figure out how to add the picture, so select the link, or copy and paste it into a browser window)

Got any pics of side covers, maybe a shot from behind....a rear end shot from behind???
This post is doomed...

Does my rear end make my race car look fat?
It looks like it's for an independent suspension. Dutchman does these conversions. There are usually manufacturing names or trademarks of the manufacturor on the casings.

Yep....made for either independent or DeDion-type suspension.
Google "DeDion" and see the Wikipedia example.
Fenders ? We don't need no stinking fenders !!!

Looks like it started out as one of the old V8 Champ rearends like they used to convert to open tubes for midgets.

I'm pretty sure it's a v8 center, 10 stud on the side so I thought it could probably take 40 ford axle housings. It has 'CALIF' and '201' cast on the bottom web on one side.
couple more pics

thanks for responding to the post guys, trying to find people that know anything about this old stuff is hard.
Oh, and I cant find any way of mounting the center solidly as I would have thought would have been done for an IRS. No markings on the side covers either.

I'm not seeing the part about DeDoin or independant rearend guys. Those axle housings look solid all the way from center section to the brake drums.
An independant rear end would have half shafts and CV joints on both sides of the center section, not a solid setup.
Anyways, Halibrand made a street rod unit very similar in appearance to what you have. It may take a week or so for me to figure out where I've got an old Halibrand catalog with a photo of it. I'll look for it when I get some time.

Not sure why they wouldn't launch before, but I finally got the last 2 photo links to show up, and I now see the IRS center section. My first post was for the one that FasterP's post shows, which I though is what you were talking about.
Also, all 3 photos appear to be 3 different units. The side cover shot doesn't show the "hat" look of the IRS photo, and the IRS unit isn't the one shown in FP's view above.
So which one are you really looking for info on?

the pic links in my first post and the one before this are all the same rear end. The tophats appear to be almost solid magnesium, the above pic of the tophat is of the inside of it.
I think the pic of the rearend in FP's post has the same center section, but is using 40 ford sidebells instead of the tophats and irs setup mine has.
CAE eh, i'll look into it - thanks.

I’ve always wondered why a DeDion rear hasn’t
been tried on a front engined sprint car. Most people
that I mention it to don’t know what a DeDion setup is though.

Hey Offie, sorry for the delayed reply.
Oh yeah, I
know about the Millers. Some of them
had De Dion fronts as well with inboard mounted drums (brakes). I should have been specific, I meant a
modern day sprinter. It would of course
be quite a departure from the norm and there would the loss of torque tube
effect but it would be a neat thing to explore. Then again, if it proved successful, the cost and complexity more
than likely would have an adverse effect on the sport.

I've managed to find out what the center is, it's a halibarnd V8 center. Not sure I mentioned it on here, but it has 201 cast in it whch according to the 'HotRod Works' ( www.hotrodworks.com ) was Halibrands designation for the V8 center. As to the side bells, who knows. But I do know now that it will take all my 40 ford parts, and I can get a 9inch ford axle conversion for it, and slide it under my 40 ford Sedan.
Thanks to the people that responded.
