Its tough to not get emotional about what happened a few nights ago. Ive raced Williams Grove since 2002 on Playstation and iRacing.
I literaly never thought I'd have an opportunity being from the Carolinas to ever race the Grove, much less ever assume we might win anything.
I'll end with this....

I was there and you looked great. Williams Grove is a different animal but you had them covered. I told the guys I sit with that there wouldn't be a happier heat winner in the history of Williams Grove speedway. The place takes a lot of grief from the spoiled rotten fans and teams around here who don't give it the respect it deserves. It's hallowed ground and those who know and appreciate the history of the sport understand what that track really means. How many tracks do you see where someone so happy to win a heat race? Congratulations and hopefully you'll come back and get yourself a feature win sometime soon.

i've said a lot of bad things about the grove this year and stand by most of them. there still needs to be a fence in the turns especially 1 and 2. my first memory of the grove this year is brian bernheisel bouncing out of the track and ending up with a fracture. i also still see people standing right along the fence on the front stretch despite what happened 2 years ago.
i will say though that the racing this season has been better. maybe it's just me. guys like dewease and dietrich have had to drive through the field so i can't make the argument that there's no passing. there've been some surprise winners like matt campbell. we missed the summer nationals so i can't speak for how that outlaw show was. hopefully they have a good show in a couple of weeks.

Congratulations! How awesome this is for you. You have accomplished something that many sprint car racers never will and you should be very proud.

I think you make an excellent point here fiXXXer. We talk about sprint car racing's "big three" in terms of drivers and all agree Kinser, Wolfie, and Sammy are legendary. There's a "big three" in terms of tracks too when you consider Knoxville, Eldora, and the Grove. As a fan I remember getting excited just pulling into the town of Knoxville the first time, then even more so pulling up outside the track. I hope to have similar experiences going to Eldora and the Grove in the next few years. These places really are hallowed ground and I can only imagine how thrilling it would be for a driver to win a heat race at any of them.

There is zero, and I mean ZERO reasons why the WG official, past and present, feels the need to stand in the opening going into turn 1. The fact that management hasn't stopped that either is mind boggling. Same with the official on the backstretch. He's a little more protected but not much.
Look what happened on the frontstretch of that track last year. And I'm sure many of you remember the Kenny Jacobs wreck.

Evidently you didn't think that all the way through. Adding a catch fence would take care of a couple issues but would elevate other risks. When Scott Zellers took his infamous ride out over turn 1, he flipped almost to Dillsburg but he walked away. The flip was violent but he never hit anything. How does that go if he slams into a fence or even worse, one of the poles instead? That could've obviously changed the outcome. How many drivers over the years have been killed or critically injured when getting hit by other cars while flipping? Add a catch fence and the risk of that happening goes way up. How many drivers have flipped high in the air against a fence and dropped straight down causing vertebrae fractures? It happened to Doug Esh at Lincoln and Kevin Swindell's driving career is now over thanks to such an accident. Now as for people standing along the fence. Not the smartest thing to do but it's their choice and everyone knows the history and what can happen. If they choose to do that and their number comes up, then that's on them. They knew the risk and chose to take the chance. That said, people do the same thing at Port Royal yet no one ever says a word about that. They just bash Williams Grove for it. That's no surprise because a lot of people have a double standard when it comes to Port Royal.

Good post. Some so called fans really just don't understand and should worry more about their own safety instead of others.
BTW crapster, way to jack a thread. Could have offered some congrats.

Congratulations !
I watched the replay on Floracing and you ran away with it.
If anybody wants to see how it is done, just watch the Flo replay. The heat race starts right around the 2:00:00 (2 hour) point and goes for about 6 or 7 minutes.

yeah...i wasn't born selfish like so many others. i can't apologize for that.
i have heard those discussions about whether fences make the risk worse. you guys are obviously experts on crash physics and have done all the crash testing to prove your point. all i can say is something seems really wrong about not trying to keep cars "in bounds" especially when there's a decent drop off behind the fence.

I know how excited I was the first time I went to WG - I can only imagine how fired up you were getting the checkers! Congratulations! I'm looking forward to reading the full story of the trip, getting ready and how you won.
