PERRIS HOSTS 3RD USAC/CRA & OUTLAW “SO-CAL SHOWDOWN” SATURDAY
By Lance Jennings

APRIL 13, 2016... This Saturday, April 16th, history will be made for the third time as the Amsoil USAC/CRA and World of Outlaws Sprint Cars will share the spotlight at Perris Auto Speedway. Also featuring the PAS Senior and Young Gun Sprints, the “So-Cal Showdown” is also a "Power of Purple Night" Benefiting the City of Perris Relay For Life and The American Cancer Society. Advance tickets with a free World of Outlaws “Fan Pit Pass” are available online at www.woosprint.com or by calling 844.347.8849. The spectator gates will open at 4:00pm and racing at "America's Premier Dirt Track" will start at 7:00pm. For more event information, visit the track’s website at www.perrisautospeedway.com or call 951.940.0134.

The "So-Cal Showdown" has become one of the “must see” races on the Amsoil USAC/CRA schedule. Featuring both non-winged and winged 410 cubic inch powered sprint cars, fans can enjoy both styles of racing at one of the finest dirt tracks in the country. “The Demon” Damion Gardner won the inaugural event on April 12, 2014 and Richard Vander Weerd dominated last year’s race to earn his second of four wins on the season. Gardner, Mike Spencer, Ryan Bernal, and Austin Williams rounded out the top-five drivers. As this writing goes to press, “The Demon” leads all drivers with 37 Perris USAC/CRA victories and Nic Faas set the 1-lap qualifying record of 15.833 on February 25, 2012. A complete Perris USAC/CRA win list is at the end of this release.

After winning the March 5th “Sokola Shootout” at Perris, Bryan Clauson (Noblesville, Indiana) sits atop the point standings. Driving Mike Martin’s #16B Cancer Treatment Centers of America / Jonathan Byrd’s Hospitality Group Maxim, Clauson earned the Woodland Auto Display Fast Time Award before earning his twelfth USAC/CRA victory. At press time, the Indianapolis 500 driver is scheduled to compete Saturday at Knoxville, Iowa in a winged sprint car.

Entering the second point race, Richard Vander Weerd (Visalia, California) is second in the point chase. Racing the family owned #10 Vander Weerd Construction / Stone Gate Development Maxim, Richard won the DJ Safety Heat Race #2 and led the first twelve laps of the feature before running second to Clauson. Fresh off a Hanford USAC West Coast victory on April 2nd, Vander Weerd will be looking to earn his sixth USAC/CRA triumph.

Brody Roa (Garden Grove, California) is currently ranked third in the chase for the championship. Piloting the BR Performance #91R HD Industries / Lee & Norma Leonard Maxim, Roa scored third in the 30-lap “Sokola Shootout.” The 360 Western World Champion will have his sights on making Saturday’s “So-Cal Showdown” his second career victory.

Josh Hodges (Tijeras, New Mexico) heads to Perris tied for fourth in the championship standings. Driving the family owned #74X Jackson Compaction / Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim, Hodges claimed fourth in the March 5th main event. This Saturday, the young driver will have his sights on earning his first USAC/CRA victory at the “So-Cal Showdown.”

The biggest news during the schedule break was that Mike Spencer (Temecula, California) had found a new ride after the Chaffin Motorsports team suspended operations. Tied for fourth in USAC/CRA points, the five-time champion will drive Tom and Laurie Sertich’s #92M Huntington Beach Glass & Mirror / Phil & Eileen King Victory as a teammate to Jake Swanson. Mike took fifth in the Perris season opener and will be looking to claim his thirty-eighth series win.

Currently tied for eleventh in points, Max Adams (Loomis, California) leads the chase for Rookie of the Year honors. Andrew Sweeney (Lomita, California) and Mikey Lovas (Wildomar, California) are also in contention.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are Jake Swanson, “Hollywood” Danny Faria Jr., R.J. Johnson, “The Cadillac” Cody Williams, “The Flying Peanut” Parker Colston, A.J. Bender, Jace Vander Weerd, Austin Williams, Logan Williams, Jeremy Ellertson, “Thunder” Tommy Malcolm, Chris Gansen, Trent Williams, “The Demon” Damion Gardner, “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, and more.

Perris Auto Speedway is located on the Lake Perris Fairgrounds at 18700 Lake Perris Drive in Perris, California.
