CANYON HOSTS USAC SOUTHWEST SPRINT CAR EASTER EGGSTRAVAGANZA
By Lance Jennings

MARCH 23, 2016... After a break in the schedule, the popular USAC SouthWest Sprint Cars will invade Peoria, Arizona’s Canyon Speedway this Saturday, March 26th. Promoted by Kevin Montgomery, the “Easter Eggstravaganza” will also showcase the Western ModLites, Mini Sprints, IMCA Sport Mods, and an Easter Egg Hunt for the kids. The front gates will open at 5:00pm with Racing scheduled to begin at 7:00pm. In addition, the track will host an Open Practice from 7pm to 10pm on Friday night. For more event and ticket information, visit www.canyonspeedwaypark.com or call 602.258.RACE (7223).

Since January 26, 2013, Canyon Speedway has hosted forty-five USAC SouthWest Coast Sprint Car races. 3-time champion R.J. Johnson (Laveen, Arizona) leads all drivers with twelve “home track” victories and thanks to Rajin Race Wear, Saturday’s main event will pay $2,000 to the victor. A complete series win list at Canyon Speedway is at the bottom of this release.

After winning the Las Vegas “FVP Sin City Showdown” on March 4th, Bryan Clauson (Noblesville, Indiana) leads the point chase. Piloting Mike Martin’s #16B Cancer Treatment Centers of America / Jonathan Byrd’s Hospitality Group Maxim, Clauson surged past Stevie Sussex off the last corner to score the victory. At press time, the Indianapolis 500 driver is expected to return to the Midwest and will miss Saturday’s action.

Stevie Sussex (Tempe, Arizona) is second in the SouthWest point standings. Driving Mike Burkhart’s #21AZ Stratis Construction / Westin Diversified RSS, Sussex looked to repeat at Las Vegas until Clauson took the checkered flags. Stevie is currently tied with Ryan Bernal for sixth in series wins and will be looking for his fifth victory.

Running third in the chase for the championship is Brody Roa (Garden Grove, California). Racing the BR Performance owned #91R HD Industries / Lee & Norma Leonard Maxim, Roa led three laps at Las Vegas before scoring fourth. The 360 Western World Champion currently leads the USAC West Coast points and is not expected to race at Canyon.

Brady Bacon (Broken Arrow, Oklahoma) sits fourth in the championship points. Piloting Keith Ford’s #73 Berry Pack / King Racing Products Spike, Bacon was in the mix for the Las Vegas win before scoring third. The former USAC National Sprint Car Champion might skip Saturday’s “Easter Eggstravaganza.”

Josh Hodges (Tijeras, New Mexico) is fifth in the point standings. Driving the family owned #74X Jackson Compaction / Mesilla Valley Transportation Maxim, Hodges ran fifth at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The young driver has already won two Winter Challenge features at Canyon Speedway and is not expected to compete on Saturday.

Among the other drivers expected to be in action are “Chargin” Charles Davis Jr., R.J. Johnson, Nick Aiuto, “The Bull” Tye Mihocko, Dennis Gile, “The Magic Man” Mike Martin, Josh Pelkey, Matt Rossi, Shon Deskins, Brian Hosford, and more.

Canyon Speedway is located at 9777 West Carefree Highway in Peoria, Arizona. To get to the track, take Lake Pleasant Parkway, then 1.3 miles west on Carefree Highway. Adult Tickets are $16 with $3 discounts available for Seniors, Military, and Students. Kids Tickets (7-12) are $6 and Children (6 and under) are FREE.
