I already posted in Volusia Virgin, but thought i'd share here also...
Last year on the final night of the 410s, it got chillier than normal and we asked the officials if we could park my Tundra on the infield and watch the races from there. They said yes. We had to pay $10 and everyone in the truck buy a pit pass.
It was definitely worth it to stay warm throughout the night. We parked on the inside of Turn One and had a blast watching the drivers so up close wheeling their sprints. This year we plan on doing the same thing and will probably bring a grill to tailgate throughout the night since there is plenty of space due to the big rigs being on the outside.
Just be sure to turn off your headlights to keep from blinding the fans on the outside of the track.

I'd rather wear a coat and not pay extra for a pit pass
do it in the dirt

That place needs more than a coat when it is cold, snow mobile suits are the dress of the day.

I live in Canada and the coldest I have ever felt in my life was in the infield at Volusia back in the early 90's. I stood with another photographer (Tom Bailey) in front of the All-Stars pace track to try and get heat from the radiator, Tom eventually got to sit inside the pace truck. I think they had 2 or 3 push trucks and a ton of cars which made for a long, long night. When the checkers flew they wasn't double digits in the stands. I think the newspaper headline the next day was 26degrees in big bold print and with the wind and humidity it seemed 50degrees colder, easily. I think Lasoski won that night, this by the way was before they flip flopped the tracks....
