Everyone praised (and rightfully so) Eldora's decision to raise the purse for the Kings Royal, sprint car racing's 2nd biggest race.

Now we see Atomic Speedway, a place that seats way less than Eldora is paying a $50k to win show in May 2016 with $3k to start.

I think this is now the 8th LM race to pay more than $40k to win. Sprints only have 3.

Is this Lucas Oil money? I know this topic came up before and everyone poopoo'ed it because the purse structure drops off alot in many of these races. But the World 100 purse was over $300k this year, and this Atomic purse is apparently over $175k.

The Dirt Track World Championship at Portsmouth also went to $100,000 to win this past season for Late Models.

I don't look at it as Sprints versus Late Models.  I think of it as Sprints and Late Models.  That outlook has allowed me to see a lot of great racing over the years including one of the $50k shows you menationed 45 minutes from the end of my driveway.  wink

Eldora gets great crowds for the Royal as well. It might not be quite the World 100 crowd, but it's very close .

The 50k race at Atomic is spread out over 2 days. Running qualifying and heats on Friday. So fans will pay $60-$70 for the complete show which will probably be a hell of a show.

As on observer, the bigger thing I have noticed is that the sprint car purses are paid in full no matter what (weather cancels one night of a 2 day show for example), whereas the Late Models will cut the purse if the first night is rained out (even though the first night is only qualifying and maybe heat races).

Other than a few instances when there was a total washout of a weekend and the race re-scheduled to another weekend, I don't remember them ever cutting a sprint car purse.

I remember a few years ago when it rained out all 3 days of the Late Model Nationals at Knoxville and they ran a 1 day show on Sunday.  The drivers couldn't believe that they were still paying the $40,000 to win and $2500 to start (other racetracks would have dropped it to a standard $10,000 to win, $700 to start event (yet ticket prices wouldn't have changed either).  As a result, the drivers support the race year in and year out (even if they are buried in the D or C main with no chance at making the feature).

I'm still waiting for the second Mopar Million.  $200,000 to win.  $10,000 to start.  $80 .  Pits $100.

The fans have $ to spend because of all the money they save on dental work.

You may have a valid point.  The Late Model crowd is kind of strange but some people tell me that I fit right in.  wink

There are 3x as many unlimited super dirt late models across the country than 410 sprint cars. Naturally they are going to have a bigger fan base and bigger shows. You would think Chinese involvement in sprint car racing over the past 10 years, with their 1.3 billion potential fan base, would have helped to boost open wheel demographics, but sadly it is too far for them to travel to the races and racing websites like Hoseheads are censored by the communist state. I guess it was worth a shot however.

They don't even know how to spell sprint car much less chromoly...http://www.ycmco.com

Overall, there are a lot more late model fans than sprint car fans.

If you're real, lucky, she may even take you home to meet her father/brother/uncle! Chances are though, it could get ugly because her brother/cousin won't take too kindly to someone outside the family trying to steal his girl.

Did Williams Grove cut the purse to the National Open one year after rain? I cannot remember but I was thinking they may have.

I have went to the Dirt Track World Championships the last 2 years. Both years have been really good racing even though Bloomquist stunk up the features. If you like racing then it is a great event, 3 days of 200+ cars is a real treat. I was not a fan of the passing points this year but they did need to try something I guess. Now if you are a non Taxi Cab likin person then you will not like it.

Let's be real here, the lack of dental work is not limited to just the Taxi Cabs. I have been to almost every track in Ohio, Indiana and PA that run sprint cars and I can tell you there is a largest need for Dental Hygenists everywhere.
